  1. Polio Vaccination Boycott

It seems counterintuitive that people boycott vaccinations, even though they are used to eradicate disease. In 1996 Nelson Mandela launched the Kick Polio out of Africa campaign which had a goal to vaccinate 50 million children. In 2003 Northern Nigerian state leaders began to denounce the polio vaccination. They told parents to not let their children get the vaccination, due to the contamination of  anti-fertility agents (estradiol hormone), HIV, and cancerous agents. These leaders were suspicious of anything from the western world. They believed America and western allies deliberately  put carcinogens, anti fertility agents, and HIV in the polio vaccine. Previous policies that limited the number of children a woman could have, made people believe that anti fertility drugs were inserted in the vaccine. A committee was appointed to access the safety of the vaccine, but was rejected due to no muslim representation. After an 11 month boycott the Nigerian state Kano leader finally gave their approval for the production of approval from Biopharma, and Indonesian company. Indonesia is a muslim country trusted by the Nigerian muslim leaders.

2. Organ Donor Vultures

I find it counterintuitive that doctors give very poor care to patients who are close to death and organ donors. A man who agreed to donate his organs upon death was wrongly declared brain dead by doctors. A suspicious daughter and nurse brought in a neurosurgeon who determined that the man was not brain dead. The mans daughter later described the first doctors as vultures. She also stated that she would receive calls from the organ donation group. They would say statements such as “we need to retrieve the organs in a certain amount of time”, and “how is your fathers condition today.” When the two doctors determined the man brain dead, they came in the room and said “we have 2 signatures thats it we need to pull the plug.” A nurse later performed her own investigation determining he had a strong gag reflex. After this the third doctor came into the room to determine he was not brain dead at all. With a national organ shortage, many believe that doctors are compromising care for organs. In San Luis Obispo a doctor is under investigation for apparently ordering a high volume of medication for an organ donor patient who later died. Many other physicians call this spooky and a rare high stakes error.

3. Vancouver Addicts

I find it counterintuitive that Vancouver provides a place for addicts to legally use drugs. Vancouver, a beautify city has a dark side to it. Vancouver has set up a safe zone called Insite, where addicts can shoot up heroin without fear of being arrested. In this safe zone nurses provide clean syringes, antiseptic wipes, and other instruments. They are also giving the addicts the best heroine. These people are receiving free heroin prescribed by a doctor, 2-3 times a day. The center is for people who did not take heroin alternatives to get clean. These people are the most severe addicts in Vancouver. One man said that the program can help him keep down a job, and not have to spend time looking for his next fix. The free heroin also keeps crime off the streets, the people either break into a car to get money for heroin or get free heroin from the program. Vancouver is blackmailing its heroin addicts. These severely addicted heroin addicts will never get off heroin, so the free drugs keep these people from being the less dangerous drug addicts they can be.

  1. The Cruelest Show on Earth

I find it counterintuitive that people continue to go to the circus when they are aware of the abuse the animals go through. Elephants are becoming extinct because of poachers and circuses. The circus hires people to capture elephants in the wild, while they are sleeping. In this process many elephants die, and the ones who remain alive are not the lucky ones. The captured elephants get hoisted into a ship and taken on a voyage to New York! Some elephants die in the boat on the 12,000 mile trip. Once they get closer to their destination the workers throw the dead elephants overboard. Once the animals arrive to their destination, which is usually a circus, they go into training.

Training is not pretty for these elephants. Trainers claim to use positive reinforcement to train elephants, but instead they use bullhooks. A bullhook is a three foot long metal rod with a sharp hook and point at the end of it. The hook is inserted in the ear or mouth and used to pulling, and the point is used for pushing. A baby elephant’s trainer was once witnessed bashing the elephant’s head with his rod, because the elephant was sick and not performing his tricks. When elephants don’t perform their tricks they get taken back to their stall after the show. In their stall they get beaten with whips and metal rods. All because they missed their cue or because they were sick. Elephants are highly intelligent creatures, and should not be treated like that. Children love circuses because they love seeing the animals. If everyone was educated about elephants, and knew the horror that happened behind the scenes, no one would go to the circus anymore. Spokesman for the USDA come out to circuses to investigate the abuse, but they always find ‘no evidence of abuse’. In order for circuses to stop abusing elephants, us, the people have to stop providing money for these circuses.

2.  Vancouver combats heroin

I find it counterintuitive that Vancouver gives their biggest heroin addicts the best heroin on the planet. In downtown eastside Vancouver, they have the biggest drug epicenter. In attempts to help the drug addicts, Vancouver set up a safe zone called an ‘insite’. In the insite drug addicts can shoot up under the supervision of a nurse. The insite provides the addicts with clean syringes and antibacterial wipes. In addition to the supplies, they are also supplying them with the heroin! The addicts receive free heroin prescribed by a doctor. This seems insane, but it is actually helping the city of Vancouver. The city of Vancouver realized it was better to help an addict get their fix, rather than see them in an alley dead with a syringe in their arm. One of the addicts that has received help from the insite, now is able to hold down a job; because he is not worrying about his next fix and he is much more calmer. The city of Vancouver is more so killing the addicts with kindness. They are helping the addicts with their fix; knowing it will still kill them, but at least the city of Vancouver’s crime rate went down.

3.  Belgium: Controversial Organ Donation

I find it counterintuitive that someone would kill themselves in order to be able to sell their organs. In 1993, Mario Vesculiti was suffering from multiple sclerosis. He realized he wasn’t going to get better, and that he was suffering. In September of 2002, he made a life or death decision. He euthanized himself in order to stop suffering. His doctor convinced him that suicide was a positive idea. After Belgium released a law allowing people to euthanize themselves, 1,000 people died from it. Diane suffered from a stroke, and she also euthanized herself because she wanted to donate her organs. Organ donation linked to euthanizing should not be frowned upon. Most people won’t want to live their life if they are suffering. Diane thought donating her organs was a great idea. She was told not to end her life, but she didn’t want to live anymore. She figured euthanizing herself at least her organs will go to good use.

1.    Penis envy and the female Oedipus complex: A Plea to Reawaken an Ineffectual Debate By: Siegfried Zepf,  Dietmar Seel

It seems counterintuitive that people would consider Sigmund Freud to be the father of psychology. With crazy theories and concepts, it’s a wonder why this man wasn’t just labeled as crazy but as the founder and creator of psychoanalysis. One of the biggest controversial theories Freud ever published was his theory on Penis Envy. Freud thought that little girls, like little boys, have a very potentiate sex drive. Penis Envy was his way of explaining the sex drive that the girls had. Throughout the years his theory has been argued and studied. A handful of female psychologists have made it a point to prove this theory wrong. For starters, Freud was very back-and-forth with his thoughts on what a little girl experienced making his claims to be wobbly to begin with. His theory was also put up against other theories that don’t single gender out. Others find his theories to be symbolic to other psychological factors and concepts.

2.  Freud’s Not Dead; He’s Just Really Hard to Find by: Susan Krauss Whitebourne Ph.D

It seems counterintuitive that Sigmund Freud is consider to be the father of psychology, but there are many psychologist out there that claim his theories still hold truth. Even though Freud is known for his more erotic theories with sexual drive, that’s not all he is known for. Sigmund Freud was the first psychologist to analyze dreams and the unconscious and his findings/theories are still being used by psychologist today. With many people making an opinion on his work, Freud’s concepts are being used in practices and have become a jumping point for a lot of other theories in psychology today.

3.  Sigmund Freud: Life, Work and Theories by: Alina Bradford

It seems counterintuitive that the father of Psychology was originally a biologist, but he in fact was. To understand the theories, you first need to understand the man behind the theories. Sigmund Freud lived in the mid 1800s under the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was raised in Vienna and had 6 children, one of which became a psychologist in order to prove her father wrong about his idea of Penis Envy in little girls. Sigmund Freud lived a fairly normal life until he stepped into the world of psychology, creating psychoanalysis. He worked with many of his own children, as well as the children in the neighborhood. Sigmund Frued’s life can give insight on the theories he had created.

Stone Money–todayistheday

P1. As a college student paying their way through school; money is so crucial. It seems to be the focus of all my thoughts. How much money is in my account? How much am I getting paid this week? I’m constantly checking my TD bank app, memorizing the numbers. Every person over the age of eighteen thinks about money at least once throughout their day. How can we, as civilized beings, not revolve around such an essential part of living in this modern world?  But we must ask ourselves what is money?

P2. Is money a crinkled stained piece of paper? Or is it a hefty limestone rock? Doesn’t the definition of money depend on an individual’s belief and culture?  As Americans, we are raised around the mindset that the paper in your wallet and the number on a ATM slip of paper makes your worth. As we learn in “Island of Stone Money” by Milton Friedman the Yaps, a small island made of five to six thousand people their wealth is based around a large limestone rock in their possession. Yaps are pre-industrial people who used massive stone sculptures as currency, this currency is known as fei. They collected this limestone from an island several hundreds of miles away and brought it to their home land to be used as currency.  The ownership and possession of the stone was known amongst the people.  The importance was unquestioned.

P3. To some the concept of hefty unmoving stones used as currency may seem ridiculous. But when a financial crisis occurs we ask where did those millions and trillions of dollars go? “Invention of Money” broadcasted by Planet Money the idea of disappearing money is questioned. As logical people who understand million and trillion is a very large number we must question how did it disappear and who got it? The answer is that money was only a concept and never a tangible thing. Money doesn’t exist as a thing but rather an idea. Money isn’t solid and its value could disappear.

P4. What’s so different between a stone at the bottom of the ocean and a number from the ATM? Both we cannot see, we simply trust they’re present. We depend on the rock at the bottom of the sea and the printed numbers from the bank. We never can hold or even lay our eyes on such measurements of wealth yet we believe in them. We believe so blindly, that our own blindness is unknown to us. We were born blind to the emptiness of money. The power of money is only registered and fueled by our unyielding belief.

P5. With belief, the Brazilian people knew their money had value again. In “Invention of Money” we learn that with no hard proof, the people had to be tricked into believing. Virtual currency was created which was basically imaginary money. The idea of virtual currency was created because Brazil had such high inflation and the economy was almost impossible to fix.  Four underdog economists created virtual currency in hopes that this would fix the economy.  People trusted this knew currency, the fake money became real money when the people believed in it. This brought Brazil into the eighth largest economic country. From nothing to everything, all in the belief of this new money. This idea relied heavily on the publics belief. Without their belief in this new money the idea would crumble like all the other ideas.

P6. As human beings, we prefer to be able to explain things rather than cast them away as phenomenon or chance. When the Great Depression crumbled America most people wondered how this could happen. “The Invention of ‘The Economy’” teaches us that before the Great Depression the economy never existed.  It wasn’t until the 20th century that the economy came into existence. The government started crunching numbers to figure out an official number for the value of goods and services within the nation’s year. This would be the national income. Soon enough everybody is talking about the economy. Something that had never existed before had now swept the nation and become something of great importance to every class in America. America soon wasn’t the only one keeping score. Eventually, other nations began calculating and measuring their wealth. Economy became a measuring tool for power and status. Which country was winning? Simply, check the economy.

P7. “Invention of Money” discusses in details that the Federal Reserve can create money out of nothing, can whip up pieces of paper and small coins, items that make the world go around. Federal Reserve is not a part of the government and doesn’t look to the government for any decisions. They decide every six weeks should there be more or less money in the US? More money which can mean more jobs and opportunities but also can mean high inflation.  Less money can slow down the economy too much.  This is a balancing act that if not done right can devastate. Federal Reserve gives money to banks in return for treasury bonds. Button pressing, that’s what it comes down too. Our money system is relied upon this magic trick. Magic of Central Banking is based on trust, without it Central Banking becomes nothing.

P8. Americans, Yaps and Brazilians are all on the same page. Americans believe in paper, Yaps believe in stones, and Brazilians in virtual currency. Each of these do not become currency without belief. We give meaning to our own currency’s. A dollar bill means nothing to the Yaps while the same goes for a large stone in America. And virtual currency would mean nothing without the Brazilians belief. Could we blame our belief or disintegrating belief on our economic status? If we believe our money is more than it currently is, would that change anything? I never knew anything about economics until this assignment. It’s quite alarming to see the differences in currency but mostly the interworking’s of currency. It reminds me of the Wizard of OZ and the great Wizard of Oz is nothing but one man hiding behind a curtain, pushing buttons. Millions out of mole hills. Money is what we make it. Money is both our rise and our fall.

0:01- A dark colored CJ-7 Jeep shows up on screen. It is sporting a spare tire. The driver is wearing a large black hat. The soft top is off of the Jeep but it looks cold out. A sticker with an ape is on the back next to the spare tire. The sky is gloomy and the person is going off roading.

0:03- The film cuts to the front windshield looking out on the hood. On the center mirror, a bigfoot cut out is hung. The Jeep is going over bumps because the cut out is swinging.

0:04- The Jeep is confirmed to be a CJ-7 based on the head lights it sports. The woods is gloomy and a light bit of fog is rolling across the ground.

0:05- The camera angle is above the Jeep. The Jeep is manual without the center council. On the seat is a map, a pair of binoculars, and an iphone. In the passenger floor well, are a pair of dirty work gloves. The driver is wearing warm cloths. A message comes up on the screen of the phone.

0:10- The camera is acting as the eyes of the driver. The driver looks down at this phone and unlocks it to view the message.

0:14- The Jeep is barreling down the trail and the driver is looking down at his phone. A hairy creature walks out in front of the Jeep dodging the SUV.

0:16- The driver types a message.

0:17- The driver looks forward, watching the road. He did not see the hairy creature.

0:18-  A message appears on the screen, “Just enough time to miss bigfoot”

0:20 Bigfoot walks infront of the screen as the Jeep continues to drive down the path.

0:23 “And so much more” comes up on the screen.

Lessons in Coaching

0:01-0:02 – The video starts off showing a man on the screen with a heavy shadowed background. As it begins to play the man appears to be very close up and angry. He is coaching a hockey team. He asks if everyone is here to play hockey and is speaking in a negative tone.

0:03-0:07 – He then yells “I am not here to coach a bunch of cheerleader’s, I need men!”

0:08-0:13 – He continues “Hit and hit hard!” You start to notice that the man is getting younger. “I don’t ever want to see one of my players back down from a fight!” The man is no longer a man, he is now a teen-aged boy.

0:14-0:18 – “I want to see blood out there! Either take it like a man or take a seat on the bench!” The boy continues to get younger and you begin to think, what is the lesson here? What seems to be happening.

0:19-0:22 – “Is that clear?” The little boy ends with.  You realize that along with the face of the man the voice of the man changes as well. But not only those things changed the whole perspectives changed.

0:23-0:28 – “As adults we need to be careful about the lessons we teach” Flashes across the screen. As I was saying the whole perspective changed and it was no longer the adult saying these things to his team, it was a teammate saying it to another teammate or child.

0:29-0:30 – National campaign against youth violence.  As adults we need to realize that we influence kids of all ages and they look up to us and it is our job to be mindful of the things we are teaching them.

Visual Rhetoric- phillygirl

:00- :04         three boys, one father dancing inside of  their home. Maybe in the dining room. Front door open and it’s nice weather, so I’m assuming they just came inside or about to leave out in a few. They’re all wearing sweat pant material pants, so they’re probably going to play a sport. Father showing younger boy how to do a certain dance.

:05-:06       game console on the TV stand, maybe their about to or just finished playing a video game. dad kicks leg up and points at youngest son as if he’s trying to show a certain type of interest. Father and kids are clearly excited and enjoying their time together.

:07-:10         Father and youngest son in the front are having a dance battle, while the two oldest boys are dancing together. Father turn was over, now it’s the youngest son turn.

:11-:16           it is still the youngest sons turn to dance. Dad is covering his mouth showing the son that his dance moves are hot!

:17-:21        the words “it only takes a moment to make a moment” appears on the screen. As the words pop up, they are all enjoying a good laugh.

:22          The boys and their father continue dancing and laughing as the dad is staring at them.

:23-:30       Words “Take time out to be a dad” appears on the screen.

Without music- The video’s purpose was made. They showed a father having a good time spending quality time with his children. They got their point across. The setting and the background gave enough detail that the audience could tell what the video’s about even without sound.

Visual Rhetoric- pdqlover20

o.o1– The first image is a middle-aged African American women possibly in her own home sitting on the couch in the living room with a laptop on her lap. The woman is wearing casual clothing, a blouse and jeans. On the right side of the image sitting next to the lady is a medium sized black and white dog. Behind the lady sitting on the couch is a view of the modern day kitchen and back door. The house looks as if it has plenty of sunlight shining through indicating that the windows or curtains maybe open. The lady’s face is calm, her eyes are focusing on the laptop. The dog is standing tall interested in whats on the laptop also.

0.02– The next image is now focused directly on the laptop screen, giving us (the audience) the view they lady and dog have on the laptop screen as the laptop sits on her lap. The laptop screen has a letter opened to view stating “how to save for retirement.” Everything in the background is blurred out, for the audience to focus only on the computer screen.

0.03– The current image is showing the outside of a grey two level house. From this image I can not make out if the house belongs to the lady in the previous image. The house looks up to date on the outside, nice landscaping, the house also has a bright red front door and a bright red and white sold sign in the front yard of the house. Indicating that the house has been sold to someone.

0.04/ 0.05 also 0.06 Shows the same exact image focusing on the house. Slowly zooming into the house approaching to the next scene.

0.07– The same African American women is now at a laundry mat. She has a scrambled look on her face. She is standing in front of a row a dryers filled with clothes, facing a the folding tables. On the table is a laundry bin filled with clothes were her cell phone sits on top, a notebook and pin, clean clothes and laundry detergent.

0.08– The women picks up her pin to write in her notebook. She is looking frantically at her cellphone to record/ write down what she is seeing on the cellphone. A man with a hand full of clothes passes behind her.

0.09– The image is showing the blue laundry bin filled with orange folded towels. The women’s cellphone sits on top of the towels, in a position that the women can view clearly. It looks as if an informational video with a young lady sitting at a desk is playing on the cellphone, that the lady is viewing while doing her laundry.

0.10– Now the lady is at a gym, working out on a exercise bike. She has on workout clothes and sneakers. She is also talking on her cell phone, with she other hand she is balancing on the bike.

0.11/ 0.12– The woman pause as if she received news over her phone call. Slowly the image shows that it was good news. Out of excitement she cheers, laughs and smiles. She is still seated on the exercise bike and still holding her cell phone to he ear.

0.13– A African American man working out on the treadmill behind her starts to stare at her with a very questioned look on his face.

0.14/ 0.15– Is showing a chart titles “The House List.” The chat is showing pictures of five different houses at the top of the chart along with the house names. The chart has different categories such as, overall rating, front yard, garden area/ backyard and walkable at amenities. Along side each category and under each house in the row are small blue stars ranging from 1 to 4 stars. Along side the overall rating category are circle stickers under each house in the row. The woman is currently placing an orange sticker under the fourth house in the row.

0.16– The woman is now standing along a street with her back facing the street with another house on it. I’m imagining that she is standing in front of a house that is on her list of houses because she is holding a clipboard and a pin as if she is checking something on the list off. She is wearing casual clothing and she has a satisfied look on her face.

0.17/ 0.18–  This image is showing the woman flushing the toilet in two different houses on a split screen. I came to the conclusion that it was two different houses because the bathroom floors are different and the toilets are shaped different also the women is standing at a different angle.

0.19– Now the screen has split into 8 different small images of bathroom toilets as the women flushes each one by one. Each bathroom floor is different.

0.20– Now the screen has split into 15 different small images of bathroom toilets. Now the women is flushing all the toilets at the same time. All the bathroom floors remain different.

0.21– The woman is standing in the middle of an empty house with no furniture she is still holding her clip board possibly with her “The House List.” To the left of the women is a younger lady dressed in a suit skirt holding a folder with her hand in motion as if she is asking the women “how do you like it?” I concluded that is a realtor. I have also concluded that they just finished touring the house. As I look closer it appears to me that this is the same house from the beginning clips. She is standing in  the same spot that shows the same back door and same half of the kitchen. This image also shows us the bright red door on the house from a previous clip but now the door is open and she is inside the house and not standing on the street on the house.

0.22– The realtor continues with her hand motion and women looking for the house nods her head and smiles.

0.23/ 0.24–  The image is now of the women slowly sitting down on the same couch from the beginning of the Ad with her dog and lap top.

0.25, 0.27–  The clip is still showing the women sitting on the couch with her dog and laptop but she looks happier and has more expression on her face.

0.28, 0.31– Ad logo “Ace Your Retirement”

Visual Rhetoric- NewEditionLover

0:01-0:03 – The first visual rhetoric simply starts off by a man in bed. Next hes in bed with his eyes closed so it gives me an impression that hes sleeping.

0:04- He immediately jumps out of bed maybe he was having a terrible dream that it caused him to be scared? Or maybe he was drinking about water that made him have to pee while he was asleep. Or the guy in the video may be in school and his alarm goes off which is supposed to wake him up. From the way he jumped up i can conclude that he has an appointment to be somewhere at a certain time and hes running late.

0:05 – He immediately gets up and reaches over for his cell phone! He maybe expecting someone to arrive to his home or missed an very important phone call. Or maybe his mother told him to take a certain meat out of the freezer and he gets that on my  way home text!

0:06-0:09- He then gets a text saying “where are you” so maybe he has an scheduled appointment with someone or he has somewhere to be ? He replies back with a text stating “hes on his way”  It could be that he committed to picking somebody up from work and hes running late due to him taking a nap or being sleep.

0:10- He finally gets up to walk out the door maybe in correspondence that text he received a few moment ago sitting on his bed. His face gives off a sigh of scared looking to complete whatever task he was supposed to complete.

0:11-He then rushes down the steps quickly ignoring his mother rushing for the door.

0:12-0:13-  On this second It looks to me as his mother calls him back in the house while hes reaching for the door. Maybe the mother instinct kicked in as she watched her son walk out the door as it looks late outside.

0:14- Next his mom must of asked him where he was going at this time of the night which it appears to be very dark, maybe telling her son that she cooked dinner and made him a plate which might be in the microwave by now.

0:15- She has a look in her eyes that she doesn’t want her son going out because of how late it is.

0:16-18- He then gets out the house after he rushes his mom that he has somewhere important to be.

0:19- He immediately jumps in the car and slams the door

0:20-0:22- Hes in his car driving which appears to be on a long dark road, He seems as though hes impatient and focused on the road.

0:23- He suddenly takes his eyes off the road checking his cell phone in quickness and agony. Maybe the same person who texted him when he was awakened in sleep wants to know again where hes at?

0:24- As he appeared to look down at his phone he suddenly looks back up to the road maybe he swerved in the other lane and their is a car approaching in the same direction as him. Or maybe an animal such as a deer jumps out in the middle of the road and almost hits his car.

0:25-0:26- He puts his arm up as he abruptly swerves on the other side of the road as a car is approaching him , hes scared and panicking and maybe thinking of life or death situations because of his texting and driving actions.

0:27-0:29- With both hands on the wheel hes trying to stay calm and focused on keeping the car leveled and to make sure he doesn’t crash into anything. His level of trying to gain control of the car again plays a huge part considering its his fault why hes in the predicament hes in now.

0:30- He gets control of the wheel and comes back to his senses. His eyes are as if he has seen a ghost receiving a text saying “dude hurry up”. A bright light appears as if it can be another cars high-beams or as if its a slight vision telling him what to do.
