The White Paper
This is due April 25
The writing center at the library is a good resource if we need help with our writing. We can book an appointment for the dates that Prof. posted at the top of the blog. Under the lectures tab, we can find the “Revision Group” for our rewrites. The tab “Course Documents” will also prove useful. Carefully revise two of our three short arguments for a fresh copy, due date is not important as long as they are done. Must show that at least two out of three times we asked for feedback and responded. Prof. recommends that we revise all three despite only needing two. There are six classes left-the last two are not counted because they are conferences to discuss or dispute our final grades. Prof. doesn’t care about penalties, he doesn’t want us to go past April 11th because he will be less able to respond to feedback. Everything is due by April 25th. The Course Outline is under the Course Documents tab and will be there if we need information on the work until the end of the semester. Once you make the rewrite, the original is “locked in”. If we adjust the original after making the rewrite, it will not be very different from the rewrite. Not all of our sources need to be cited in our essay.
The Portfolio Requirements are:
(7 pieces)
1-4: Two short argumentative essays and their earlier drafts.
5: A visual rhetoric assignment
6: An annotated bibliography
7: Reflective statement
The portfolio will be due before we meet on Wednesday April 25. During the class that Wednesday, we will do a “Portfolio Double-check” to make sure that the portfolio is complete. The remaining two classes are Grade Conferences (Monday April 30th and Wednesday May 2nd).
In the Reflective Statement, the Core Value 3 can be related to Safe Saws. Core Value 4 can be related to the Visual Rhetoric. (All of the Core Values should be linked to one of our specific assignments in which we have met the goal of the value.) This is due April 16th.
Remaining classes:
Mon Apr 9th
Wed Apr 11th- Short Rewrites due
Mon Apr 16th- Reflective due
Wed Apr 18th- 3,000 word paper due
Mon Apr 23rd- Bibliography due
Wed Apr 25th- Portfolio Double-check
Mon Apr 30th- Grade Conferences
Wed May 2nd- Grade Conferences
There are 14 rules of Absolutely Essential Grammar and Punctuation that cannot be violated. We can find the explanations in the document Fails For Grammar (FFG) which can be found under the tab “Course Documents.”
We started today’s class by discussing the rest of the Spring class schedule and the classes to come in the next 4 weeks. We also discussed the Writing Center and how to get help if needed. It is on the fourth floor of the library. Our final two scheduled classes are on Monday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 2. We will use one of those days to discuss our portfolio. Our portfolio will include seven pieces of our work, with two short argumentative essays (earlier drafts included), a visual rhetoric assignment, annotated bibliography, and a reflective statement. On Wednesday, April 25 we will have a “Portfolio Double-Check”. Our self reflective essay is due on the 16th, while the 3000-word paper is due the 18th. After the schedule, we went over the 14 grammar rules, and started with “Affect” and “Effect”. Affect is a verb, while effect is a noun.
We started off class by talking about the writing center and what dates we can meet and have writing sessions. Next, we talked about the rest of the semester review and what we have to have done by certain times. We talked about punctuation and grammar and the problems people had with different kinds of punctuation. I had problems with affect/effect. Effect is a noun and affect is a verb. Periods and commas always go inside the quotation marks. Also, I had a question on number 5 which was count and non-count nouns. The trick is to say many or much to determine if something is counted or not.
During finals week, we will have a conference and talk about the semester and agree on a final grade. 75% of the grade will be on portfolio material and the other 25% will be non-portfolio material. The portfolio will consist of 8 items and it is all due before April 25th. The annotated bibliography is almost complete because a large chunk of it is in the white paper. The course outline has the assignments, deadlines, and plan for the rest of the semester. Affect is a verb and effect is a noun. When quotations are used, the puncuation must always go inside of the end quote.
We need to rewrite two of our three short arguments in order to show that we responded to feedback and demonstrated responsiveness.
There’s a total of seven items we need to include in our portfolio:
Research paper
2 original argument essays
2 revised argument essays
Visual rhetoric assignment
Annotated bibliography
Reflective statement
Grading conferences will take place on April 30 and May 2.

In the beginning of today’s class we used the time to review the rest of the year and what assignments have to be rewritten and turned in by certain dates and how we are going to need to manage the rest of our assignments and get it done by the end.
Schedule:
APR 11- Short Rewrites
APR 16- Reflective
APR 18- 3000 word paper
APR 23- Bibliography
APR 25- Portfolio double-check
APR 30 and MAY 02- Grade Conferences
After we looked at the rest of the year we reviewed some of the grammar rules and learned ways to correct the errors we where struggling with. To end class today, we continued reviewing the different grammar rules that we, as a class, struggled with.
Class started with a preview of the rest of the semester (less than a month!!). Further explanation of what’s on the blog.
Overview of the rest of the Semester:
Wednesday April 11- Short Rewrites
Monday April 16- Reflective Essay
Wednesday April 18- 3000-Word Paper
Monday April 23- Bibliography
Wednesday April 25- “Portfolio Double-Check.”
Monday April 30/Wednesday May 2- Grade Conferences
We went over the details of what will be written about in the Reflective Essay at the end of the semester. We went over the annotated bibliography specifics. We did not go over how to build a portfolio since it is confusing.
The last part of class was mostly just going over common errors in grammar (FFG). We went over numbers 4, 5, 7, 9, 12, 13. Using the word “you” in any form is strictly forbidden. The wind blew very hard and the ceiling tiles made noises (pretty spooky).
Class was very informative and eye opening since now I know I need to really start focusing on my writing a lot more than I have been.
-Agenda for the end of the semester
– Course outline is where you can find most of the information for the end of the semester, it allows easy access to all documents needed.
– There is a Revision Group tab in order to see what will work when revising your assignments
– Writing center studios- they have walk ins no appointment needed, you can stop by and gain help with your writing skills. They aren’t one on one but they are still helpful for an hour to gain more skills to add to your writing.
– By April 25 class is over the last two dates are during the week of finals in order to go over the grade of your portfolio and your work throughout the semester. Friday May 4 final grades will most likely be posted.
– Carefully revise two of your short arguments out of three, copy and paste your paper into a new post and make your revisions there.
– Grade is based 75% of your portfolio, the other 25% is made up of exercises
– Portfolio: two short arguments essays with earlier drafts included with them, visual rhetoric assignment, annotated bibliography, and self-reflective statement.
– Annotated bibliography- background and how it was used
– Affect and effect- affect is a verb, effective is a noun or adjective- affect is used when it is changing the way something is going to end up usually followed by “will”
– Periods and commas are ALWAYS inside quotation marks
Today, we talked about the writing center, how to access it, and just how useful it is. I am considering going there myself next year. Professor went over what is due for the rest of the semester. We then looked at deadlines for all our assignments for the portfolio, then went right into some grammar rules that we find ourselves to have difficulty with.
