Proposal+5—Yoshi

For my research paper, I am analyzing how police brutality and racism go hand in hand.

  1. Obama Is Correct to Separate Police Brutality from Racism

The Essential Content of the Article: This article explains how Obama separated police brutality and racism, and how he was right for doing so. This article also brings up how a white homeless man was killed by a police.

What it Proves: My thesis is how police brutality and racism are connected. This article will help me counter-argue my argument because it claims how white people get killed by police too.

2. Police Brutality in America Is About Class, Not Race

The Essential Content of the Article: This article explains how racism is not main victim of police brutality. Instead they say it is the social class a person is in.

What it Proves: This goes against my argument because I believe the problem is race and has nothing to do with class. To prove this I have a case where a police pulls over a state attorney.

3. Police aren’t targeting and killing black men

The Essential Content of the Article: This article explains how violent criminal acts are who police are more likely to shoot in America.

What it Proves: This articles goes against my argument, so it will help me in defending my case. The article states how police are more likely to shoot violent attacks, but when a white person attacks police they usually don’t shoot.

  1. 8 White People Who Pointed Guns At Police Officers and Managed Not to Get Killed

The Essential Content of the Article: This article tells about eight men who pointed guns at officer, but did not get shot.

What it Proves: This article, with the help of other evidence, shows that police are more likely to shoot black men over white men.

  1. Man Arrested & Punched for Sitting on His Front Porch

The Essential Content of the Article: This video shows a black man sitting on his moms porch while being interrogated by two police officers. The police officer claimed someone called and said they saw him breaking into the house. When the police walked away she says no one actually called, she was just suspicious. Eventually man sitting on porch gets punched.

What it Proves: It proves that police profile black people. Which then can lead to police to attacking them more likely than they would attack a white person. The police punched and arrested the black man because he assumed the man was breaking into a house.

6.Cops Tackle 11-Year-Old Girl And Holds Her At Gunpoint

The Essential Content of the Article: This video shows a news reporter talking about a little girl who was held at gun point because her security alarm accidentally went off. When the police found her, she was in bed watching tv.

What it Proves: This video proves the shows the lack of empathy that some cops possess.

7. Bodycam allegedly shows Baltimore PD officer planting drugs

The Essential Content of the Article: This video shows an officer plating drugs in someones backyard. (He thought his camera was off) The officers then goes to the street, ‘turns on his camera’ and then says I’m going to check over here, and ‘finds’ the drugs he planted

What it Proves: This video shows the extent officers will go to get someone in trouble. The person had nothing in their backyard, but they got in trouble for what the officer planted.

Proposal+5 – nyctime7

For my research essay, I will be examining racism among police, and how movements like Black Lives Matter do more harm in solving the problem than good. Over the last few years, the topic of racism in the police force has become increasingly crucial. Some believe there is no such thing as racism anymore, while others think history is repeating itself. Mainstream media has covered numerous police killings, notably those of black men by white cops. This “new norm” spawned groups like Black Lives Matter, who try to bring light to the subject matter, in hopes of changing how blacks are treated. I believe racism is in fact alive in America, but I don’t necessarily believe that blacks are targeted more than other races. I’d like to examine whether or not the amount of violence towards blacks is a matter of race, or rather a problem with police as a whole. Are they treating everyone unfairly and require reform, or is there a specific disconnect between police and the black community.

  1. http://www.dailywire.com/news/7264/5-statistics-you-need-know-about-cops-killing-aaron-bandler#

The Essential Content of the Article: The media doesn’t give all of the necessary information. Apparently Hispanics and whites suffer more casualties from cops than blacks.

What it proves: Blacks are not necessarily targets, but there is a problem with police and fatalities.

  1. http://blueprint.ucla.edu/feature/police-racism-search-for-answers/

The Essential Content of the Article: Racism by police isn’t necessarily on purpose.  The bias exists but individuals might not even know it.

What it proves: Racism may be too deep-rooted to treat each cop individually. Officers may think they’re doing the right thing, but are tasked to do something wrong.

  1. https://www.rawstory.com/2016/07/a-former-officer-explains-why-racist-police-violence-occurs-even-when-cops-arent-racist/

The Essential Content of the Article: Society and media have painted the picture of blacks being more dangerous than whites. It has somewhat become a part of our culture, making certain people inherently treat minorities differently. Some of those people become cops, and unfortunately tragedies are the result of said bad conditioning.

What it proves: Some police are simply products of their environment. A current mindset of your average American is slightly bias, so it is unrealistic to expect an officer to not be affected.

  1. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-w-whitehead/just-shoot-the-mindset-re_b_5432716.html%3E

The Essential Content of the Article: Law enforcement has slowly adopted the attributes of the military. The lines between police and military are beginning to blur, which can very well be the cause of the increase of police shootings. Perhaps some of that power needs to be taken away or toned down.

What it proves: The problem for law enforcement is bigger than race. Racial killings are the result of a bigger problem, which is the amount of power police are given

5.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/police-shootings-studies-racial-bias_us_5796f2d8e4b02d5d5ed2b4aa

The Essential Content of the Article: It’s hard to tell if shootings are racially motivated or not. However there are studies that show that police violence against minorities when compared to whites, does occur more often.

jsoccer5’s Proposal

For my research I will be examining the hypothesis that putting an age restriction on sugary drinks, such as soda and sports drinks, for children under 18 will make a significant positive effect on increasing childhood obesity and increase overall health of children. Childhood obesity is a nationwide epidemic where children are well over the appropriate weight for their age and height causing many health concerns. Lot of children suffer from the illness of obesity are because of the food and drinks they consume. Many children consume sugary and high caffeinated drinks on a daily basis, and most of which have no nutritional value. A large reason why children drink these things is because it is inexpensive and available to anyone of any age. By having a age restriction it will make it harder for children to purchase these products, and will make it so that less children are consuming no nutritional drinks.

In my research I have found that 1 in 6 children are affected by obesity, which is 17% of nations children and adolescence ages 2 to 19. Childhood obesity is higher in certain ethnic and racial groups than others. I also found that children that come from a low income family or parent is not highly educated that they end up being more often obese.

Sources

  1. Childhood Obesity Statistics from CDC

The Essential Content of the Article: In this article it provides statistical evidence about childhood obesity among American youth based on race, ethnic groups, income and education.

What it Proves: Childhood obesity is a national wide epidemic in all American children but there is many different factors involved in who and why the children are effected by obesity.

2. Ideas to Curb Childhood Obesity

The Essential Content of the Article: In this article the discussion of how sugary drinks are a large effect on the obesity epidemic and present different ideas to help curb this epidemic. These also discuss how there is nothing effective being done in this area of concern.

What it Proves: Sugary drinks are highly involved in the obesity epidemic and that people out there are trying to come up with ideas to positively effect this issue but nothing has been done yet.

3. Higher consumption of Sugary Drinks and Fast Food because of Public Ads

The Essential Content of the Article: Childhood consumption of sugar drinks and fast food has increased where TV ads for theses are largely prevalent. There is no direct link to body weight however there is to consumption in this article.

What it Proves: There is a direct correlation to exposure to Sugary drink ads and consumption of these products.

4. direct relationship between sugar drinks and obesity

The Essential Content of the Article: A study completed in Massachusetts that proves that sugary drinks are largely influenced in the childhood obesity epidemic.

What it Proves: Consumption of sugary drinks are directly related to childhood obesity.

5. Sugar drink Initiative

The Essential Content of the Article: there is currently an invitiave going on to help consumption of sugary drinks to decrease.

What it Proves: Sugary drinks are a large reason for obesity and people are starting to recognize this and make a change.

Each are backed by research and test done to prove how music is able to do so. As well as discussing why it is that we are losing these programs and how we reclaim what has been lost.

What it Proves: I plan to use this information to pull concrete examples of how exactly music education actually aids the school system and how getting rid of it we show bad results across the board.

Balancing the scales of music: A quantitative study of music education and academic achievement in a southeastern state public school

http://search.proquest.com.ezproxy.rowan.edu/docview/219970788?pq-origsite=summon

The Essential Content of the Article: This article is a dissertation of findings of the differences between students who had music education and those who didn’t showing how they differed in scoring on standardized testing and the learning advantages.

What it Proves: I will using the findings of each study to make my case of how removing music education is going to cause adverse affects to students.

The Importance of music Education in public schools

http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/Music/05/31/music.education.cake.difiore/index.html

The Essential Content of the Article: This article gives a first person view of how music education experiences were able to be manifest in real life situations. By bringing this article in its less about the numbers and brings in real life perspective from someone who has experience with music education.

What it proves: By using this article I will be able to draw from the real life perspective of students who have had thru the music education process. By having first person recollection its creates more reliability giving a face to the studies.

The Consequences of Curtailing Music Education

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/tavissmiley/tsr/dudamel-conducting-a-life/the-consequences-of-curtailing-music-education/

The Essential Content of the Article: In this article it discusses the adverse effects that are occurring due to the cut of music education programs. It also delves into how in most cases the programs are lost by lower-income or urban communities due to funding. And those who are on the higher bracket are less likely to suffer due to being able to put their kids in private study but that isn’t always an option for those in a lower-income bracket

What is Proves: In using this sources I’ll be able to delve into the adverse affects that taking away music education will create further differences between brackets of income. By taking away theses programs those who live in lower-income brackets are less likely to be able to continue their studies meaning they wouldn’t be receiving the same advantages those whom continue on are able to receive. Creating inequality in learning styles because a source has been taken away from them.

For my research essay I will be examining to what degree or if at all race plays in the justice system. This topic of debate cannot and should not be avoided; understanding all of its complex variables is critical in maintaining a functional society. The majority of the African American population (and other minorities) living in the U.S. today believe that racial profiling is as real as any war. Movements such as Black Lives Matter have taken off with incredible force and along with it a very strong influence. Is the brutality focused in on the black community? Or is the media portraying it that way just to get a story?

http://www.americanbar.org/publications/human_rights_magazine_home/human_rights_vol37_2010/fall2010/justice_for_all_challenging_racial_disparities_criminal_justice_system.html

The essential content of the article: This article gives present day statistics related to race and incarceration percentages. This is an extremely important topic of discussion when analyzing faults in the justice. The fact is 1 in 3 African American babies born will expierince incarceration in their life time at our current rates. This is a troubling statistic to hear but it is important to not take every statistic at face value

What it proves: “National surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice find that while African Americans may be subject to traffic stops by police at similar rates to whites, they are three times as likely to be searched after being stopped.” It prove that whether it is done consciously or not there can be discriminations found in earlier stages of the processing of the law.

For my research essay, I will be investigating the advantageous possible uses of stem cells within the modern society. Although the research has been stigmatized due to a few misconceptions, they have many beneficial uses.

These cells are non-specified cells that can be programmed to become any type of cell. This is favorable in modern society specifically due to the fact that in the human body, organs go bad, or they were defective to begin with. These organs can be replaced using surgical means, but the amount of transplatable organs available is much lower than that of those who need them. By using stem cells, organs such as the heart or lung can be grown and transplanted into an individuals body. Stem cells also have the ability to cure certain diseases that are caused by stimuli on the cellular level. These diseases include Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Heart diseases, type 1 diabetes, etc.

Human stem cells can be found in more places than aborted fetuses. They are located in the placenta, blood of the placenta, and blastocysts (fertilized human eggs outside of the womb). This misconception has caused the magnitude of research to be overlooked due to the immoral aspect of this science. By the definition of the anti stem cell movement, this would not be “man trying to play God”, but instead, man saving another mans life and improving another’s living quality.

Proposal +5- yankeeskid6

For my research essay i will be examining the true depths of racially connected police brutality deaths. For the past 3 years the common american consensus has been that police officers are targeting unarmed black males and falsely arresting or killing them. The movement called “Black Lives Matter” has really sparked an uprising in the United States. Rally’s and protests have become a common thing as well as destruction to communities and police officers. Some say its as bad or worse than the Rodney King beatings of the 90’s.

Although, does all of this really make sense or is it easy for us to jump to conclusions based off race? The race card is a very powerful tool and has been used to win arguments for years. There may be an issue involving police brutality, but is it a race issue? This is why i wish to conduct my research on this topic; hopefully it will open some eyes.

  1. “5 Things You Need to Know About Cops Killing Blacks” http://www.dailywire.com/news/7264/5-statistics-you-need-know-about-cops-killing-aaron-bandle

The Essentil Content Of The Article: This article from The Daily Wire mostly discusses the common misconceptions with police officers and black civilians. The 5 points that are presented have to do with black civilians, Hispanic civilians, white/black/Hispanic cops as well as death rate and crime. The author proves with accurate statistics his argument on black hate crime.

What it proves: The article proves that the statements made about cops killing blacks isnt reality. Through research the author proves with statistics that in fact more whites are killed by cops rather than blacks. The data suggests that 50% of all fatalities by cops are white while 26% is black. The article goes on further to debunk the conspiracy that it is still a racist act because blacks only make up 13% of our population while whites make up 60%. However, blacks commit 75% of our crime and most of the crime involve shootings or murder. The final 4 points of the article paint a picture of our society, our true society. According to the article it is more likely for a black man to kill a cop than the other way around, black/Hispanic officers are more likely to fire at a black than a white and finally many black related deaths involve some case of trying to harm an officer.

2. “Is biased media coverage of police shootings of blacks creating a false narrative of an epidemic of white racist cops murdering innocent blacks?”

The Essential Content of the Article: This article talks about the media and its role in coverage of racist white cops and how they heighten the issue. It talks bout biased media especially African American run media. Finally, it brings up a new concept of justified arrests or killings even from technically innocent people.

What it proves: The article proves that killings by officers in certain situations have been going on for years but have been recently heightened by the news media to direct it in a racism way. It also proves that even with  low population more than half the officers killed have been by African Americans and that most black kills have been on murders and rapists.

3. “Philando Castile shooting: What happened when filming stopped?”

The Essential Content of the Article: This article talks about 2 cases in which police are being scrutinized for using excessive force, that is the Sterling case as well as the Castile case. The article talks about what happened after the Castile case when the cameras cut and later that night. We also hear the side of the officers in the Sterling case.

What It Proves: The article proves that cops do whatever they can to save victims and help families. Once the cameras cut the officers performed CPR on the victim and tried to save his life, and later that night comforted the family and daughter. This shows they aren’t animals. It also expresses the biggest concern in all of these cases, was the victim truly innocent. It proves in the Sterling case the officers tried many different ways to take him down but with no response and knowledge that he had and reached for a gun they had no choice but to fire.

4. “Police Brutality is Not a Racial Issue”

The Essential Content of the Article: This article chronicles the case of Zachory Hammond an unarmed white male that was shot to death by police officers.

What It Proves: The main point of the article is to show that a case like that of Hammond isn’t publicized enough because it doesn’t fit the racial standard. Many people don’t know about it because its a white death. It is easy to create tension and stir thing up if the victim is of a different race. Therefore, its just another way of how the media manipulates the public into thinking just African Americans are being killed by officers.

5. “Police Shootings and Race”

The Essential Content of the Article: Article gives substantial statistics of police shootings and racial involvement as well as the crime rate of races that are being killed. Its argues that measurements should be made off of crime rate rather than race because crime rate is the deciding factor to where and how many officers are stationed in certain places Statistics show that most crime ridden places are towns with large minority classes.

What It Proves: The article as a whole simply proves the Black lives Matter movement is misconstrued and falsely developed. Statistics prove their claims to be wrong.

Prof2020’s Proposal

In my research paper, I will be examining the medical rights of children and the liberties given to them in the way of making medical decisions, whether life altering or negligible . More often than not, children are seen as too immature and not knowledgeable enough to make a well informed decision and control over the minor’s health care falls into the parent/guardian’s hands. Of course, there are exceptions to nearly every rule has each case is different and the rulings and details are relative.

Prof 2020’s Sources

1)http://www.americanbar.org/content/newsletter/publications/gp_solo_magazine_home/gp_solo_magazine_index/medicaltreatment.html

Essential Content of the Article:
The American Bar Association offers details of prominent court cases involving children’s medical rights. It thoroughly explains the grounds on which specific cases were filed and the courts’ rulings in each matter. Additionally, it provides opposing and unbiased perspectives on the topic.

What It Proves:
There are exceptions to each side of the argument and the court can’t be expected to give an absolute, umbrella-type ruling.

2)https://www.questia.com/library/controversial-topics/medical-rights-and-children

Essential Content of the Article:
In some states, it is up to the discretion of the state to grant “limited power” to minors when making medical decisions. Some states have implemented the “mature minor doctrine” which offers more control to minors who engage in behaviors typically associated with adulthood.

What It Proves:
Some states have moved beyond the typical stance on the mental and judgmental capacity of minors and are willing to be flexible where the situation calls for it.

3)http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/456472_2

Essential Content of the Article:
There are many different laws that restrict the medical rights of a minor. The vast majority of medical decisions is left to the parent or guardian.

What It Proves:
Parents are often given entire control over the health care of their child. The state assumes that the parent will have their child’s best interest in mind but this is not always true. Many laws make it very easy for a parent to abuse their child or hinder their well being, even when the parent believes they are doing what’s best.

4)http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2015/01/22/case-sparks-debate-about-teen-decision-making-in-health

Essential Content of the Article:
This article focuses on a teen girl named Cassandra who has been diagnosed with a highly curable form of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. At the time the article was written she was just months away from turning 18 but was forced by the state to undergo chemotherapy against her wishes.

What It Proves:
Forcing a child to undergo treatment against their will can not only harm the child’s psychological well being but may do more to worsen their condition than help it. If a treatment plan is not followed well, it can make the condition harder to treat than it had been before.

5)https://www.bhclr.edu/!userfiles/pdfs/course-materials/Minors%20Rights%20in%20Medical%20Decision%20Making.pdf

Essential Content of the Article:
This article places a particular importance on informing the minor in question of the facts pertaining to their case to help them make a better informed decision than if they had gone without said facts. This is an effort to make sure the patient has a firm understanding of their options and the consequences and possible outcomes that may come with each choice.

What It Proves:
It is not unreasonable and to give a child the right to make an informed decision about their life.

6)http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/19/well/family/when-should-children-take-part-in-medical-decisions.html?_r=0

Essential Content of the Article:
When is a child competent enough to make important decisions? Is there a switch that gets flipped on their eighteenth birthday? Involving a child in discussions about their health care can “foster the moral growth and development of autonomy in young patients.” This will better improve their ability to ask themselves these questions and make informed decisions when the time comes.

What It Proves:
At times, there are more benefits than draw backs when involving a child in decisions made pertaining to their health and well being.

Proposal+5 – scarletthief

For my research essay I will be examining the difficulty to accept people identifying as a different race, when it is accepted in society today to claim a different gender from your biological one. In 2015, former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner officially identified as a woman and was applauded for this announcement. She was accepted as a popular transgender woman, but when others identified as a different race they weren’t accepted. Also in 2015, the former president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Rachel Dolezal was revealed to not be biologically black. She “identifies” as black, but just identifying as a race doesn’t make you a race. Or does it? If Caitlyn Jenner can be a woman, why can’t Rachel Dolezal be black?

America separates race as White (non-hispanic), African American, Hispanic, Latino, Asian, Pacific Islander, Native American, Alaskan Native, and bi- and multiracial. When check marking a box for who we identify as there is even an option for “other,” and we are expected to pick our biological race rather than what we identify as. Gender used to be: Female or Male, but gender today isn’t as defined. A male can claim to be female, or vice versa, or even gender fluid, but know that whatever they claim is accepted and respected. What makes gender identification more acceptable than race identification? Being born into a white family means you must also be white, but there are cases of adoption to consider. If a they were born Asian, but adopted into a white family, are they still Asian? Also, the benefits of claiming to be a certain race, such as applying for colleges and scholarships, make many disagree with the freedom to claim one’s race. This problem is confounding yet should be able to be answered as easily as a person’s gender.

1.The Transracial Adoption Paradox

The Essential Content: This article is about how by being adopted into a white family causes others to treat the adopted child of different race as if they are also white. Despite the “white privilege” Janine Bishop received as a Korean adoptee into a white family, she truly considered herself to be Korean, yet society categorized her as White because she has been Americanized and raised by her white parents. Transracial is usually described by domestic interracial adoption or international adoption. Transracial adoptees tend to show more variability in their racial/ethnic identities. Racial identities in transracial adoptees tend to vary due to age, race, and geography. Prejudice and discrimination during adolescence and adulthood cause their choice of racial identity to change whether it’s due to pride, discomfort or other wise.

What it Proves: I can use this article to explain the complications of choosing a specific race with the transracial adoption example presented in the article. At one point in their lives, participants mentioned in the studies of the article had claimed to be white at one point, yet  changed their answer to their biological race in adulthood. The identity they chose was what they thought their race was at the time, but as seen, it can change for multiple reasons, such as discrimination or a growing pride in ones biological ethnicity.

2.Being Blackish: Race and Self-Identification

The Essential Content: Ethnic and racial classifications aren’t definite, but exist due to social conditions. All races have some example of changing or enhancing their appearance to look like another race, yet it is unacceptable for a woman like Rachel Dolezal to perm her hair and have a dark tan to appear black. Another example is how in the documentary Somewhere Between four Chinese adopted girls all felt white, but were considered to still be Chinese and were discriminated against for being Chinese. There is further personal information about Rachel Dolezal, her family especially in this article such as her having 4 adopted African American brothers.

What it Proves: I can use this article to help explain how race, like gender, can be a choice rather than a category. This article contains information that exhibits how adoption can create racial identity crisis.

3.Half of young people believe gender isn’t limited to male and female

The Essential Content: 1000 people from the ages 18-34 were surveyed to chose which category of gender recognition they believe in: Gender can only be male and female, Gender is a spectrum, or I don’t know. Half of them said that gender is a spectrum and believed in there being more than just the binary idea of gender. There are also ID cards in some cities like San Fransisco that have no specified gender.

What it Proves: I can use this article to show how supporting Americans, especially the current generation, is accepting of multiple genders and how society is making exceptions for people that don’t fall in the binary (male/female) categories. Society is willing to make ID cards for transgendered or otherwise people, so they should also be able to accept and support transracial citizens too.

4.Genetically white woman now claims self-identify as black: If you can choose your gender, can you also choose your race?

The Essential Content: Claiming race can create problems when applying for scholarships. Whites can identify as African-Americans in order to  apply for a scholarship since there isn’t a need for genetic testing to ensure you are black if anyone is allowed to identify as whatever race they choose to identify as. This denies actually African-Americans from getting the scholarships they need to further their education.

What it Proves: This article provides evidence of negatives to allowing people to identify as the race they choose.

5.Race and Ethnicity confusion

The Essential Content: Most Americans have multiple racial and ethnic origins that over generations of possible interracial marrying, ancestry becomes less important as family trees begin to include more than just one race. One example mentioned is that many whites are multiracial, but often times they choose their ancestry or race based on a favored cuisine or culture. There are also times when people tend to act “color blind” and not separate people based on races because they want to avoid using race as a descriptive factor.

What it Proves: I can use this article to support how racial origins in America aren’t just separated into white, black, asian, or etc. but is more complex. Why should identifying as a specific race or races be so important that a person is denied being black because they’re biologically white when a white person can claim to be German or Irish if they feel like it. There is no difference in claiming one race from multiple and claiming to be a race is what this article can help explain.

A05 Proposal +5

For my research essay, I will be examining the flaw in health care regarding the brain disease Alzheimer’s, how this disease can be cured and prevented, and how this inevitable disease forms. Over the past years, numbers have continued to rise in the amount of individuals who have developed Alzheimer’s disease, but one controversial question that still remains is how? Alzheimer’s is a mysterious brain disease that tends to form in progression with age, affecting many aspects of the brain.

The amount of individuals who are diagnosed with this disease have continued to rise and will do so until action is taken place regarding prevention and cure. Within the research of Alzheimer’s, I will look into what causes of the disease, what effects Alzheimer’s has on the brain and body, and what can be done to monitor, prevent and cure Alzheimers.

http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_what_is_alzheimers.asp

The essential content of the article: This article provides facts about Alzheimers within the category of dementia. It is the most common form of dementia and it explains the progression of the disease.
