Visual Rhetoric—ChandlerBing

0:01. As the scene opens up, we see a partial view of the back of a black jeep appearing to be old and worn out, maybe from the early nineties? The top is also completely removed from the vehicle. To the left of the spare tire, there is a magnet featuring a white silhouette of a beast and under it are the words “I believe.” The Jeep appears to be travelling down a dirt road in an arid environment. The sky is covered in gray clouds to which are shielding most of the sunlight making everything appear gray.

The camera pans out to reveal the driver of the Jeep. The only thing you can see is the back of the driver. He is wearing an akubra style hat with the brim wrapping all the way around the hat, he is also wearing a brown leather jacket, suggesting he is some sort of explorer.

0:02-3. We are now sitting in the passenger seat of the Jeep viewing the air freshener dangling from the rearview mirror. It is in the shape of a beast walking on two legs covered in brown fur.

0:04. We look down into the vehicle from overhead. There are brown colored binoculars laying on top of a large map on the passenger seat. Facing screen up on the binoculars is an iPhone.

This is the first time we see the interior of the vehicle. The gauges are all in the center of the dashboard and again the seem to be very old and non-digital. There are also a pair of work gloves on the floor of the passenger side.

0:05-6.  The phone screen illuminates with a text from someone. We now see the driver’s face for the first time. He is very young probably aging between twenty-two and twenty-five years old. He wears expensive-looking glasses. The driver takes his eyes off the road and turns his attention to his cell-phone on the passenger seat.

0:07-9. Text appears on a black screen stating “The average text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds.”

0:10-11.  The driver is now reading his texts while driving . The person said “Are you still hunting bigfoot?” So now we have confirmed that the beast that the driver has all over his car is indeed bigfoot and the driver is looking for the mythical creature.

0:12-14. The vehicle is driving straight towards the camera still on the road. The license plate reads “BF HTR” which could only mean ‘bigfoot hunter.’  The driver is still looking at his phone while bigfoot walks in front of the camera and all you see is his from his chest to his torso. The vehicle nearly strikes bigfoot as he walks across the rode but the driver does not notice the creature.

0:15.  There is a close up of the cell phone and the driver finishes the text, sends it, and places the phone back on the passenger seat.

0:16-18. We see the driver from the eyes of the figurative passenger and he is intently looking at the surrounding area indicating he is searching for bigfoot.

0:19-22. The audience looks at the vehicle travelling along the road as if they were in the woods looking out towards the road. The words “Just enough time to miss Bigfoot” are across the top of the screen. Then we see the familiar body of Bigfoot walk across the screen one more time.

0:23-25. The screen fades to black and the words “And so much more…” are displayed on the screen. The filmmaker is clearly referring to the possibility of a fatal accident due to texting and driving.

0:26-30. A website is now on the screen called ‘stoptextsstopwrecks.org’ this confirms that this is a no texting and driving ad.

Visual Rhetoric – rainbow987

0:02 – In the first image, a group of young people comprised of both males and females are sitting in a room. There is a tan couch and curtains, which could suggest that they are in a living room. The curtains are closed, so it is probably night time. One of the boys is sitting on a pink bouncy ball on top of the couch. He looks unsteady, like he could fall very easily. Red solo cups are scattered around the room and in people’s hands, indicating that they are most likely drinking alcohol. There is a guitar in the corner of the room, so one or more of the people in the scene are probably able to play the instrument. There is also an abstract looking painting on the wall.

0:03 – In this image, the boy on the bouncy ball is seen falling off and tumbling towards the ground. The camera pans out to show more of the room. There is a big mess of red solo cups and food scattered around the room. There is a lamp turned on, which most likely confirms the theory that it is night time. There are weights on the floor, which suggests that one or more of the people work out.

0:04 – The boy on the bouncy ball completely crashes onto the ground, causing a table filled with food to break. He falls and is seen lying on the ground. White text appears on the screen over top of the scene. It says “PARTY FOUL.” This text is most likely referring to the boy falling on the ground. It was a poor choice to joke around on the bouncy ball, causing the boy to fall. Therefore, it could be considered a party foul. The camera pans out further and you can see another young girl holding a red solo cup. She has her hand raised to her face, indicating that she is shocked/surprised. This expression is probably a reaction to the boy falling and breaking the table.

0:05 – A new scene appears. A group of young people are sitting around a table, which appears to be in a kitchen or dining room. On the table, there is beer, red solo cups, hot sauce, and a plate that looks like it is filled with spicy peppers. A man in a red checkered shirt and backwards hat is eating the peppers by shoving a lot of them in his mouth at once. A woman is standing near him, dumping hot sauce onto the peppers as he eats them. There is a group of people gathered around the table cheering on the man as he shoves the food into his mouth. It looks like it is night time due to the lighting in the room. The lights are clearly on in the room due to the yellow hue. It is most likely summer, since the woman is wearing shorts and a tank top.

0:06 – The man is trying to swallow the peppers while laughing along with everyone. He appears to be struggling. He is sitting on a cushioned bench around a table.

0:07 – The man stands up and spits out his food onto the table. The woman next to him opens her mouth wide, showing that she is shocked.

0:08 – The scene is still the same, except more white text appears on the screen that says “PARTY FOUL.” It is obvious the text is in response to the man spitting out his food. It is implied that shoving too much spicy food into his mouth at once was a poor decision.
0:09 – A new scene appears. There is a fireplace in the background with alcohol sitting on the ledge. There are people talking around the room. The lighting is dimmed. There is a young man and a young woman in the room. The girl appears to be swinging a golf club. The boy appears to be assisting her. There are also blue solo cups scattered throughout the room, which suggests that they are drinking alcohol.

0:11 – The girl swings the golf club, and it flies out of her hand and lands on the ground. The couple looks surprised and shocked as to what just occurred.

0:13 – The camera pans to the wall, showing that the golf club knocked a mirror off the wall. The people around look shocked and worried by their wide eyed expressions. The same white text appears on the screen once again, saying “PARTY FOUL.” Swinging a golf club indoors could be considered a poor decision, prompting the words.

0:14 – The scene changed once again. The camera is above a group of people crowding around a table. There are blue solo cups arranged on the table, suggesting that the group is partaking in a drinking game. There is food on the floor. There is a fireplace and a television, so it is probably a living or family room.

0:15 – The young man that was standing near the table filled with the blue solo cups jumps onto the table, landing on his stomach. There are people standing and sitting around the room with blue solo cups in hand.

0:16 – The table breaks as the man’s weight lands upon it. The blue solo cups fall onto the floor. The same white text appears on the screen reading “PARTY FOUL.” Once again, this text is referring to the poor decision of the man crashing onto the table.

0:18 – There is a group of young adults outside. It is night time. Everyone is dressed in short sleeves, suggesting that it is summer. There is a man smiling and holding his hand up. It looks like he might be about to give a handshake to the man standing next to him. The group of people are standing along a wooden fence.

0:20 – The people start walking in one direction. They are laughing, and it looks like they might be being loud.

0:22 – One of the young men takes keys out of his pocket and unlocks a car. He and others and walking in the direction of the vehicle.

0:24 – The young man walks to the car and pulls open the driver’s door. People are walking around him.

0:25 – The young man is laughing and appears carefree as he gets into the car. There is a young woman getting into the passenger seat.
0:27 – The scene is of the young man and woman sitting in the car. They appear to be talking to one another. White text appears on the screen that says “underage drinking and driving.”

0:28 – The same scene is in the background. However, new white text appears that says “the ultimate PARTY FOUL.” This message is in reference to the young man. He had obviously been drinking and therefore should not be driving. Therefore, it is an extremely dangerous party foul.

0:31 – The scene fades out and becomes completely black. White text is all that is left on the screen, which reads “ultimatepartyfoul.org.” The words provide a link for a viewer to go to in order to find out more information about underage drinking and driving.

This PSA, entitled “Party Foul,” is about underage drinking and driving. It shows multiple scenarios in which young adults make poor decisions due to the effects of alcohol. These actions are often dangerous. Then, it shows a young man who had been drinking getting into a car to drive, along with a passenger. Words appear on the screen explaining how this is a bad idea while also implying the danger of it.

Visual Rhetoric—theadmiral

0:00, 00:1- A younger asian man looks to be sitting on the couch possibly in his home. There is a blanket, rolled up next to him. This could have been done intentionally by the director to give it a more homey feeling, and not just a set. He is looking at his phone, and appears to be texting. There looks to be a black and white picture on the wall, again probably for decor of the house. I cannot make out the image, it looks to be some sort of mountain setting. There is a red barn or some sort of shed out back, if you look through the sliding glass door.

0:02- The man is now sitting in a library. He is still on his phone, He is in different clothes, now wearing a grayish, blue sweater. His hair is still in the same fashion, the kind of wave hairdo I used to wear in third grade. He looks to be sitting in the back of the library, with a copious amount of books behind to him. I cannot make out any titles on the books, probably done to not take away from the actor. There is one book to the right of his head that stands out tho, only because of its yellow color. The title of the video is “project yellow” so I think the yellow book can be a small sign used by the director.

0:03- The man has changed scenes again to a gym now. He looks to be doing some sit ups. His outfit changed again, to a plain white shirt, and a yellow headband. He is still texting, fully focused on his phone. The gym he is attending does not look very occupied. You can see one man in the mirror, looking to be doing some tricep pushdowns, and the Tv is on, so we know he is not alone in the gym. He is now wearing a silver watch on his left wrist. There is a hand sanitizer dispenser to the right of his head

0:04- The man changed scenes from the gym, now to some sort of outdoor patio of a restaurant. There is a person, removed to his right, our left, that looks to be sitting down, and eating. We can tell he is eating because he is bringing something to his mouth, and that is usually how I eat a burger, so I think it is safe to assume he is eating some sort of finger food. The man is still on his phone, texting, but he has changed his outfit, or shirt at least. There are people in the background, it looks like they too are eating.

0:05- The man has changed scenes again to it appears to be his birthday party. It is safe to assume it is his party because there are a bunch of people standing up around him, and his is sitting with a cupcake with a candle in it in front of him. He is texting, as he has been in every other scene. His shirt has changed again, to a white quarter zip sweater with blue stripes on it. He has a black watch on now.

0:06- Now we see the man in yet another location, on a carousel. He is still texting. There is nobody near him on the carousel. He is now wearing a cream colored sweater.

0:07- The man is still texting, but now he is on a date with a red headed girl. I do not know where they are, maybe her house because it looks like a home, from the plants behind his head, and there looks to be a kitchen behind him and to the right. They are sitting on a couch, and he is wearing the same white quarter zip sweater from a few scenes ago. She is dressed in all black, and kind of out of the light, bringing more focus to the man texting, and so much her and their date.

0:08- The camera is now placed in the back of an open refrigerator. We see the man texting, and closing the refrigerator door.

0:09- The next scene is the same man in the dark, bundled up in a blanket. He appears to be laying in his bed, with nothing but the light from his phone shining on his face.

0:10- The same man is texting, sitting in front of a ping pong table, with a blurred out white ball on the screen. The table is by a window, and it looks to be kind of cloudy outside. He is sitting on the arm of a couch, so this could be in somebody’s basement or somebody’s game room. He is now wearing a black shirt and a pair of grey pants.

0:10-0:11- We see the man in two different scenes in one second. The speed of the scene change is beginning to speed up. In the first scene, his is in a blue puff jacket with a hat and a blurred out label. He looks to be on an escalator at the mall. He is still texting. In the second scene, he is back in the white sweater, and at some sort of club, or house party with lights flashing. The man is texting in both scenes still.

0:11- In the later parts of the eleventh second, we see yet another scene change of the same man still texting. He is now sitting on a blue park bench, in a jacket. The trees in the background are bare, and he is wearing a jacket, so it is safe to assume that it is winter time.

0:12-14- The twelfth second also has three rapid scene changes. They are all with the man texting, but just in different locations, and in different clothes. The first scene, it looks to me that he is on the second story of a mall. He is wearing a grayish black shirt, and texting and walking. The next scene is him in bed with blankets over his head. His face is lit up by the light from his phone again, but it still looks to be day time from the light coming in from the window in the back of his room. He also is shown back in the gym, behind a man doing some sort of benching. He is still texting (which is not the proper thing to do if he is spotting somebody in a gym, like he is shown in the picture.) In the thirteenth second, they show him back in the mall on the second story. After a short amount of time, he is shown back at the restaurant outside eating, and then back at the gym, but no longer doing sit ups. He also is shown back on his date, back at the ping pong table, back at his birthday party, back at the library, and then back on the carousel.

0:15- They show another rapid burst of scenes starting with him closing the refrigerator, at the ping pong table again, on the escalator at the mall, back at the party with the lights, back at the park, then back in bed.

0:16- He is shown still texting back on the second story of the mall, and then behind the wheel of his car, in a scene we haven’t seen yet. He is texting, in a blue plaid shirt, with no seatbelt on.

0:17-0:19- It goes to the side shot of him in the car with the passenger side, front door open. We see the right side of his body, and he finally puts his phone down. It then goes to an unlocked phone screen, with the rest of the messages blocked out, but only focusing on one message saying “Ok. Driving now so I’ll ttyl.” It stays on the same picture, and then the words “not here” pop up in white letters at the top right of the picture.

0:20- It shows the man driving off, with both hands on the wheel. The words “not here” show up on the screen again, and then underneath of that, a text bubble that says “never here” shows up.

0:22- The last scene shows the car driving away, and at the bottom shows the words “don’t text and drive.”

Visual Rhetoric – Yoshi189

0:00- The video starts off with what seems to be a nice sophisticated man. His short orange brown hair is slicked back with gel. His face is freshly shaved with some stubbles on his cheek. He is wearing a light blue button down shirt with a red tie. He looks like he is in the working-class, possibly going to an office job. His face is brightened, because he is looking out a window. His mouth is open, and his hand is going towards his mouth as if he is eating something. In the background there are brown cabinets against the wall, therefore he is probably in his kitchen.

0:01- The camera has now backed up, and a woman is to the left of the frame. Her hair is tied in a ponytail, and she has on a nice olive green shirt on. She is reading the newspaper, with a glass of orange juice next to her and a plate. They are both probably eating breakfast together, before the man has to go to work. They are most likely husband and wife. A little further back to the right is the nicely cleaned up man. He has a plate in his hand, because he was eating breakfast. You can clearly see the setting now. The man is by the sink looking out the window. Their stove is connected to their counter next to the sink. The woman is standing on the opposite side of the counter than the man.

0:03-0:05-  Is a close up of the man washing his dish. Then it cuts to his wife smiling because he is cleaning up after himself. He seems very tidy and helpful.

0:06- Shows the man walking out to his car with a leather bag around his arm. He is looking over to his left at his neighbor, with his hand raised waving to his neighbor. There is an orange cord tangled up on the floor, his neighbor is bent over trying to up tangle this cord. The neighborhood the man lives in looks middle-class. He has an average everyday car.

0:07-0:09- Shows the man with the neighbors hose in his right hand. The hose is on, and the man is spraying what looks to be the neighbors bush. To the right of the screen you can see the neighbor slightly blurred. He looks elderly. He is short, olive skinned, and he has big squared glasses. He has a huge smile on his face, because the nice looking man is helping him out.

0:10-0:13- The nice man has now made it to work it looks like. His setting looks to be in an office break room. There is a bulletin board with papers hanging on it. There is a man and a woman sitting at a round table with mugs in front of them. They are both dressed professionally. The man has a button down shirt on with a vest over top. And the woman has a nice dress shirt on with a cardigan over it. In the background is the nice man with a coffee pot in his hand, that is filled with coffee. He walks over to the round table his ‘co workers’ are sitting at, and pours the coffee into their cup. The man the proceeds to look up, and smiles to the nice man.

0:14-0:15- Is the nice man in line at the grocery store. He is holding a bunch of vegetables in his hand. He looks at the man behind him. The man behind him has a pineapple in his hand. The nice man the proceeds to nudge his head signaling the older man behind him to get in front of him in line. The man with the pineapple in his hand lifts the pineapple, nods, and smiles thanking the nice man. The older man behind him steps in front of him, and gets in front of him.

0:16- The nice man is now in the car. Outside of the car’s windows is blurry. I looks like the nice man is driving. He is looking over his shoulder and down. It looks like he is looking at the center console of the car. He has sort of a confused look on his face as if he is trying to read something.

0:17- It is a closeup of a phone. The phone is lit up with what seems to be a text message notification. The nice man’s hand comes into the screen, as he reaches over and grabs his phone off the passenger seat.

0:18- The nice looking man is still driving because outside the windows is still blurry. The nice looking man is now looking down in front of him. One of his hands is on the steering wheel, and the other hand is holding his phone. He is has a half smirk on his face, as he is reading the message on his phone.

0:19- This is an overview of the nice mans car coming to a stop at the intersection. From the scene before you know he is still looking at his phone. There is pedestrians crossing the road, and it seems like the nice man is going to hit them.

0:20- A red car with his passenger window down pulls up next to the nice man, and he smiles at him but quickly realizes the nice man is on his phone. So the guy in the car next to him changes his facial expression to a look of disappointment.

0:22- The nice man looks over to his left, and see the guy looking at him. The young man looks embarrassed to be on his phone.

0:24- The nice man now looks over to his right, and this older woman in a blue shirt is sitting on a bench. She looks very sweet and she is smiling at him. But then she realizes he is on his phone, and she gives him a mean look. She raises her eyebrows and opens her eyes big.

0:25- The nice man realizes and he drops his phone and looks forward again.

0:26- The scene cuts back to the older woman and zooms in on her staring at him.

0:27- The camera cuts back to the nice man and he drops his phone and nods his heads towards her to show he acknowledged her. Then the nice man looks forward and proceeds to drive away.

Visual Rhetoric–todayistheday

0:00- In this freeze frame we are presented with a dusty sepia colored landscape.  The houses in the background are small and decently kept. The dimmed color makes it hard to pin point the time of day but most likely early afternoon. A car is parked distantly in the driveway of a small rancher home.  A brown brick building is close by.  A white gas pump station is centered to the left of the screen.  The numbers and words on the pumps are neatly placed and easy to read even with the fuzzy quality.  Gas prices are low and frozen from the last transaction.

0:01- An older tan car pulls into the gas station lot. They slow to a stop and park in front of the brown brick building. On the wall in front of the car is a blue payphone.  The blue seems to jump out from the rest of its drab surroundings.

0:02- The bright blue phone is hard to ignore.  A brown car parked in front of a brown building, and the rest of the surrounding seem to blend in with the dull.  But amongst it all is a bright blue pay phone. It draws you to the center of the screen.

0:03- Two teenage girls step out of the car.  They are pretty and young but the hair and fashion of their outfits screams 80’s. One girl who steps out of the driver side is wearing pale high rise jeans and a white shirt. Her hair is teased and volumized.  Her friend is wearing a long sleeve black sweatshirt paired with patterned tights underneath green athletic shorts.  She is holding something in her hand and has sunglasses on. The black and white contrast of the girls outfits makes the connection to black and white.  Right and wrong.  But the coloring of the scene is neither black nor white.  The background that surrounds the two girls is a wooded area.  They may be from somewhere in the suburbs, a small town that hugs the wood line.

0:04- The girl in the white grabs the payphone and turn toward the other girl.  The girl in the white out-stretches her hand toward the other girl.  The girl looks to be holding a wallet in her hand but its too blurry to tell.

0:05- The girl and the phonebooth become the only focus.  She is reaching for the phone, her face is calm.  In her white shirt and hair blowing back gently, she seems very innocent.

0:06- Girl’s fingers begin dialing a number.  Her nail polish is white and neatly applied.  Above the numbers there is a sticker with SAVE in all bold letters. The words below are illegible so it makes you ponder what are we saving?

0:08- The girl in white brings the phone to her ear. While her friend stands by with her hand on her hip.

0:09- The girl in white rolls her eyes as she moves to bring the phone to her ear.  Her friend besides her remains blank faced as she waits beside her.

0:10- The girl switches the phone to her left hand, as she lazily leans against the booth.  Her friend waits by with her hand on hip.  This is when I noticed that when the girl switched the phone to her left hand you could notice the hair tie on her wrist.  Her white hair tie was snug against her wrist as she holds the phone.  This made me relate it to a handcuff, shackled to the phone.

0:11- Girls look annoyed, as they continue to progress with the phone call. It’s as if they have more important things to be focusing on and that this is simply an inconvenience.   The phone is finally pressed against her ear.  Wind blows the one girls hair back.

0:14- Girl walks towards driver’s side of car with a bounce in her step. Her hands are empty.

0:15- The front side of the car is the main shot. In the background you can see the girl in white approaching the driver’s side. Trees and farm land are very distant in background. Telephone in the back looks like a cross with the sky surrounding it.

0:16- Background stays the same.  The woods and the telephone pole still in view.  The car color changes. Interior leather seats.  The girls form can be seen through window. She is holding something in her hand.

0:17- The girl’s hand is not empty, she holds a phone in her hand.  The door is open.  Different car  and a different girl.  She is alone this time.  Except for the phone in her hand.

0:18- Girl is wearing black ripped jeans and a black hoodie.  Phone still in hand as she begins to step into her car.

0:19- Girl gets into car and is seated. Her arm is reached to shut the door.  From this point of view, you can tell it’s the same girl in white from earlier.  But it is obviously a different time period.  The car is all black except for the tan seats.  The sun is shining in from the window. She is wearing a tan hat with her hair pulled back.  She has her ears pierced and has her cellphone in her hand. Even as she is reaching to close her car door her eyes never leave her phone screen.

0:20- Camera view is low to the ground as if placed on road.  The black car the girl is driving starts to drift slightly over the yellow line. A car can be seen in the distance on the other side of the road.

0:21- Point of view as if looking over girl’s shoulder. Black interior of car with black clothing draws your eyes toward white screen of phone. Text convo can be seen but words can’t be deciphered.  But her head is angled to the side, looking at the phone. Her thumb is hovering over keyboard.  She has two unanswered texts on screen.

0:22- Camera point of view is low to ground again. The girl’s car is now well over the yellow line. Heading straight toward the van on the opposite side of the road.  You can assume this point of view is from the front of the girl’s car.  Telephone poles line the side of the road.

Visual Rhetoric—Flyerfan1974

0:01: We start off the video with a wide landscape shot of hot coals, and ash. However, the ash and coals are starting to be lifted up. A wind may be moving in to area. This devastation may have been a forest fire or a house burned down to the ground. The landscape probably looks so desolate and barren to show the devastation what a fire can do.

0:02: Almost half of the ashes are swept up by a sort of golden force. Trees and grass have come back to life with the removal of all the ash. However, a lot of ash still remains. The back of a boat looks like it is leading the golden force.

0:03 Almost all of the ash has been pushed away from this mysterious golden force. Mountains, trees, bushes, and grass come back from the dead. Making the landscape as beautiful as it once was. In the background, huge mountains start to grow to their mighty selves again. The destruction of huge mountains, which must be extremely difficult to destroy shows just how powerful a fire can be, it just ravishes an area. The golden force is what the area looked like before. The beauty of the before fire landscape shows the viewer that all that beauty is to valuable to be destroyed. The most important part of this frame in the boat. It is followed by the bed of a pickup truck. It is a truck hauling a boat, but it is going backwards. Time is being turned back, so whatever this truck passed, it caused destruction to.

0:04: Our shot is now along the road. We see the once mighty mountains, the beautiful trees, grass, and bushes. The trees have all their leaves on, and the man is using his boat. It must be hot, hot summer time. The truck pulling the boat is however, causing an extreme number of sparks. Something metal must be scraping the asphalt. The grass is not extremely green, it is a more yellowish. This discoloration is caused by the hot summer heat. This is the kindling to the fire, and the sparks are the fuel.

0:05: We see the man in his blue pickup truck, his shirt is yellow, and he has a watch on. The man has his arm out the window, tapping the roof of his truck. His eyes are pointed not at the road, but up at the sky. He looks as if he is not paying attention to the road, or the trailer behind him. He may be taping the roof because he is listening to music, he is taping along with the beat. He has the window down so how does he not hear the chains? The music must be so loud that its drowning out the sound of the chains dragging.

0:06: We now have a view from under his truck, and see that the chains used in the connection are sparking up. The metal being drug along asphalt causes the sparks. You can see the ash filled barren wasteland left behind by the fire.

0:07: We see ash and hot coals being lifted off a house and a grass filled front yard. A house was put in this video to show how people’s homes filled with all their belongings, can be destroyed by a simple mistake. The porch of the house is even filled with many belongings. You see the truck driving on by.

0:08: The house is even more intact, with all the belongings being visible. There are barrels and crates all on the porch. They must be filled with produce, with is grown at a farm. This farm house shows that farmers lively hood can be wiped out by the snap of a finger.

0:09: You now can see the front of the truck, moving backwards, turning what was destroyed back into fire, back into what it was before. There is a sort of landscape with dry grass, boulders, and dessert sand. The landscape looks like Texas, which his very hot during the summer. This heat plays a huge role in the forest fire.

0:10: We now have an aerial view of the truck and trailer. The ash is being pushed back to reveal streets, sidewalks, lampposts, and businesses. The creator of this video must have added the town to show what the wildfire can do.

0:11: More and more businesses are revealed. With the destruction of businesses, people will lose their jobs, consumers will have to seek a business farther away, and the whole towns economy may plummet.

0:12: A school and a playground has been cleared of the ash by the backwards moving truck. The creator added this to give an emotional hook. Children go to school, and play on playgrounds. They are defenseless, and are our future. This adds to the whole picture how much a wildfire can take from us.

0:13: The left rear tire is about to hit a pot hole the chains have just started to make sparks.

0:14: The backwards moving truck is now passed the pothole, and the chains are not dragging. It is safe to say that when the truck was driving forward and hit the pothole, the chains were knocked loose. Also we see leaves falling, Autumn may upon us. The leaves falling, and landing under the chains must have been the kindling for the fire.

0:15: The truck is perfectly fine, pulling a boat on a trailer just like normal.

0:16: The truck has stopped in front of a city hall with the American flag flying. This represents the devastation that wildfires have caused the us. A bear with a forest ranger hat and blue pants is walking on 2 feet toward the trucks hitch. It is the famous Smokey Bear who represents forest fire prevention.

0:17: Smokey now walks up to the chains to adjust them.

0:18: Smokey crossed the chains so they are shorter and do not drag even while hooked on the truck, and so that if the trailer comes off the ball of the hitch, it will be cradled by the crossed chains.

0:19: Smokey crosses them all the way so the truck is all set.

0:20: He reaches for the chains which are already connected.

0:21: He pulls on them to check if the chains are secure.

0:22: Smokey gets a close up of his face, and beings to no his head yes, saying “this truck is ready to go.

0:23: The truck pulls away and Smokey’s back faces us as he looks at the truck in pride.

0:24-0:30: A sign comes up on screen and says, “Spark a change not wildfires,” and Smokey is in the same spot he was before, in the background.

Visual Rhetoric – theintern

0:00-A woman and a man are in an office in a building. You can tell they are in a building because you can see the top of trees which means the office must be on a higher floor level. The office is like an ordinary office theres cubes in the center with executive offices surrounding them. In the office there windows sills to look outside and the lobby where the cubes are located. The man is a white older man who is wears glasses and seems like he is one of the executive offices with a black woman which seems like they are about to shake hands, he wears a nice light charcoal suit with a baby blue buttoned down dress shirt with no tie, meaning that he is dressing business casual. His office has a plant inside with a desk that has a paperweight and pencil holders and some sort of certificate hanging from the wall. The black woman is there for her interview with the man she is reaching out to shake his hand. She wears a black suit with a black appropriate skirt. Later the man asks her to sit with is hand gesturing. There is a man outside of the executive office in one of the cubes holding a phone to his ear perhaps talking to a client while looking at his desktop but he is blurred out. There seems to be another cube in front of him but we can not see who is there.

0:01- They are both sitting and the camera is angled from the woman’s right shoulder and faced to the man. The man looks amazed but also having a curious look on his face. The man looks like early or mid fifties with his lips puckered up a bit. His hair is receding a bit where it looks like he has a bigger forehead. His eyes are green.

0:02- The camera is again outside the office and near the cubes now we can see the woman better she wears a light orange buttoned down dress shirt and by the looks of her face it looks like she is waiting to answer a question from the man who is looking at her with is hands up and crossed in front of him near his face. The man seems like he is getting a better observation of her and at the same time asking her a few questions. As the interview is going on everyone outside his office are working the man with the phone is still there but there is one man walking by the office almost blocking the man, he is also blurred out a bit. As the second keeps going he is talking to her.

0:03-  Now the camera is angled on the man’s left shoulder facing the woman’s face. She looks puzzled but at the same time it looks like she is about to answer the man. The woman’s eyes are brown, she has a young face seems like she just got out of college.

0:04- She just answered a question she had for the man with a smile on her face. She is now waiting for his answer and hopes the answer she gave was good enough.

0:05- The camera switched back to where the cubes are located and is looking through the window sills of the executive office.

0:06-0:08 – The camera is up in her face, we can see her mouth open ready to speak with her eyes looking very concerned. Now I see that on her left her she has an earring.

0:09- Now the camera is angled on her shoulder facing him, he is looking down either at her resume, desk, or a gesture of disappointment who knows. His face has changed a bit, now he has a more serious face and left wondering from her answer.

0:10- He is now beginning to talk while leaning back in his chair but still looking downward with no eye contact.

0:11- He has a serious look on his face once he asks her a question but his face is more rude than serious like there is something bothering him.

0:12-0:16- The camera turns from him quickly to her from his left shoulder to her face and she begins to answer to him but her face expression is sharp, confident she knows what she wants.

0:17- Quickly turned for a close up on the man who listened very closely to her answer but is now thinking of a question to ask her again.

0:18-0:20- The camera faces the man and he looks her straight in the eyes and is slightly smiling but questioning whether or not to hire her and then gives his final thoughts.

0:21- The camera is right outside the window sill looking at her. She looks like she is about to get up. The office has more detail he has a dial up phone on his desk. Near the the widows to look outside he has a shelve with books lined up together.

0:22- The woman stands up and reaches out to shake the man’s hand which is usually the conclusion of an interview.

0:23- The camera is near the widow sill to look into his office and you see the man holding out his hand to shake the woman’s hand but then we realize she is not there and there is no one in front of him just his chairs.

0:24-0:25 – The camera focuses on him with his puzzled and concerned face looking beyond his desk. He looks worried and sad.

0:26-0:27 – The camera is angled from his left shoulder and is looking facing his chair there is no one sitting in it, it’s empty and facing him as well.

0:28-0:30 – The commercial ends and you see the man faded and looking downwards with white words in the middle of the screen reading “GRADS of LIFE. org” and Ad council copyright on the screen to the bottom right.

Visual Rhetoric- Splash305

The video I have chosen is called Never Here by Project Yellow Light and it is 35 seconds long.

0:00- In this image there is a boy sitting looking at his phone on a tan, new looking leather couch, it seems to be his house. It seems that way because in the corner of the room I see a photo of was seems to be a husband and wife.  There is a fleece blanket bunched up next to him which gives off the feeling of comfort in one’s own home. He is wearing a black sweater and gray sweat pants so it might be the winter time. There is a glass door in the corner of the room and you can see what looks like a shed of some sort.

0:02- The same boy has switched places, still on his phone but now in a library. Wearing a different blue sweater but I cannot see his pants. He is sitting at a desk in the library with books around him but he is not reading them. The boy seems more interested in his phone rather than all the books around him. It doesn’t look like he in in a school library because all the books look to be covered in laminate, like they do in public libraries.

0:03- The boy has moved places again, this time to a gym. He is still on his phone and looks like he is doing sit-ups. He is now wearing a white T-shirt with a yellow sweat band around his head, and a watch around his wrist. Around him are free weights like a squat rack and a bench press but no people. The expression on his face hasn’t changed in any of the scenes, he keeps the same one. He looks like he doesn’t care what is happening around him and all he’s worried about is what’s on his phone.

0:04- Now the boy has moved into what looks like a mall cafeteria, and is still on his phone. He is not worried about the people around him nor does he look like he is socializing with them. He is sitting next to another boy in a red hoodie who appears to be eating maybe talking with friends. He is wearing a gray long sleeved shirt with a T-shirt underneath. There are strangers around him eating and talking at other tables and he seems to be the only one distracted by his phone.

0:05- The boy looks like he is at a party, maybe his birthday party because there is a cupcake right in front of him with a candle in it that is lit. He is sitting on his phone not paying attention to the cupcake or the people around him. The people around him are all standing around him at the table, one looks to be clapping and others smiling having a good time. He is wearing a nicer white blue stripped sweater and only interested in his phone.

0:06- The boy is alone on a carousel sitting on a horse while on his phone. His expression is still the same and there is nobody around him. He is now wearing a cream long sleeved shirt with a T-shirt underneath. He doesn’t seem to be bothered that he is alone because he has his phone.

0:07- The scene has changed to him with a girl sitting on a couch that looks fabric, maybe at her house because he had a leather couch. She has her arm on his shoulder trying to talk to him but he is only paying attention to his phone. Maybe she is his girlfriend and she is trying to get his attention but he doesn’t care, maybe she’s even upset that he isn’t paying attention to her. He is wearing the same sweater he wore in the scene at his birthday party. There are a lot cactuses behind them so maybe the girl’s parents are really into nature.

0:08- The boy is back in his house so it seems and he has his phone in his hand, the camera shot is being taken from inside the fridge and he is closing the door.

0:09- He is now laying in his bed and is underneath the covers but still on his phone. He looks like he is hiding so maybe he’s supposed to be asleep but he’d rather play on his phone.

0:09- The scene has switched to another house, maybe his friend’s house and he is standing on one side of the ping pong table. It looks like he is trying to film his friends playing ping pong. He is wearing a T-shirt and sweat pants, so maybe that represents that the season is changing. His facial expression has still not changed.

0:10- This scene he is on an escalator that looks like it could be in a mall and is seems to be going upward. There are no people around and he is still on his phone. He is wearing a worn out red hat and a puffy blue winter jacket. In the background, the lights in the mall seem to be out so maybe the mall is closed.

0:11- Now it looks like he is at a party with people all around. The room is dark but lights are flashing and people are having a good time but he is on his phone paying no attention to them.

0:12- He is back laying in his bed laying on his side with the covers pulled over his head, still on his phone. There is a window next to his bed and the blinds are closed but there is light shining through so it is still daylight outside. But he is sitting in the dark alone in his room.

0:15- The scenes that I have stated above where all played again multiple times in a very fast pace.

0:16- He is now sitting in a car on the drivers sit with his phone in his hands. The car seems to be in park and he does not have his seatbelt on, and he is in the car alone.

0:17- The boy put his phone down and it is showing us the conversation between him and someone else. He told the other person he was driving now so he would talk to them later.

0:21- He started the car and is showed him driving away and words popped up on the screen that read “Not Here, Never Here.”

0:23- Next is showed the car continuing to drive away and another caption came up that said “Don’t Text and Drive” and then the ad was over.

Visual Rhetoric Rewrite-LifeisSublime

The video I have decided to analyze is a 35 second video called Saved by the Scan.

0:00- The image is of  woman who is climbing a mountain. It seems to be cold where she is because she is wearing a jacket and boots from this point of view. The mountain has grass and dirty but the color is almost gray, giving off that cold feeling. The woman is alone, climbing this mountain with no safety precautions at all. In the background are more mountains.

0:01- In the first second she is moving up the mountain. Seeming to struggle slightly. There is fog around her. Not much as changed.

0:02- In this time the video is zoomed in on the woman, but her face is blocked by her arm, leaving room for interpretation on her emotional state. She is looking down, at her footing I assume. Her jacket isn’t really a winter coat but a light jean jacket. She has bracelets on her arm and her hair is red.

0:03- The woman is now looking up. She seems to be looking at where ever it is she is climbing towards. Her facial expression is hard to read. The way I’m taking her facial expression is she is tired of the climb.

0:04- The perceptive of the camera changes and now we are looking at the woman from down the mountain. She is not climbing on grass and dirt, but on a mountain of cigarettes. The fog is now clearly smoke. The woman is still struggling up the hill.

0:05- The woman is still climbing the cigarette filled mountain side. She looks up a little bit but we can not see her whole face just yet.

0:06- In this second, the camera zooms in on her hand (or many her foot) that is pushing through all these cigarette. The odd thing is that most of these cigarettes are full cigarettes, not all just cigarette butts. She is pushing through them.

0:07- In this second I find out that is was her foot in the previous second. The pile of cigarettes that she stepped on falls down the mountain as she continues to climb.

0:08- The mountain is now getting steeper. The cigarettes are falling all around her and it seems hard to keep her footing. Smoke is still rising from the mountain, as she tries to hold on and push her way up.

0:09- In this second the woman puts her foot up on a ledge on the mountain in order to go up.

0:10-  The camera focuses on her hand now as she digs it into the side of the cigarette mountain. The cigarettes are sticking out of dirty.

0:11- In this second we can see the other arm/hand planting into the side of the mountain in the background of the first. Moving up.

0:12- The camera is now on her face again. She seems tired and looks as though she is working very hard to get to the top of this mountain.

0:13- This second is almost the same as the last, expect the woman has turned her head to look more at what is in front of her rather than what is up head. I would assume she is looking where to put her hand this time.

0:14- The camera shifts again, and now we are looking at the woman from underneath her. We can see the direction in which she is climbing in, but not a destination. The mountain seems even more steep as last time.

0:15- This second is similar to the last. The woman has moved her leg up to keep climbing.

0:16- In this second the woman is now at the top of the mountain. She slowly is standing up to make the last couple of steps up the mountain. There is nothing at the top.

0:17-  This second is the same as the last. The woman making her final step to reach the very top of the mountain made of cigarettes.

0:18- Now the camera is zoomed in on her face. She seems to realize she is at the top but doesn’t have an expression showing if she is happy or sad. Again she looks tired. In the upper left corner there is a box of text that reads “You stopped smoking”.

0:19- The woman looks more over to her right, as if looking at the view. The text extends to now read in full, “You stopped smoking now start screening”. The woman seems to be content.

0:20- In this second she blinked and started to form a smile. The smile is not all the way there yet, but it looks like a smile one would make after they have accomplished something stressful.

0:21- She now smiles and looks directly at the camera as is starts to zoom out. She is standing on the center on the top of the mountain. Throughout the while video no grass was visible, expect for now it seems as though she is standing on some.

0:22- The camera continues to zoom out as the woman continues to smile. Standing tall.

0:23- The camera is still zooming out, showing the mountain a little bit more. The woman is still smiling.

0:24- Again, still zooming out, while she continues to stand on the top of this mountain smiling.

0:25- The image on the screen changes and is now what I think is a MRI machine or a Catscan machine. Words appear above it saying, “Talk to your doctor of learn more at”. In this second the other part of information is not visible yet.

0:26- The website at which to learn more at appears, savedbythescan.org. On the bottom of the image are organizations affiliated with this movement: the American Lung Association, Lung Force, and of course Ad Council.

0:27- This information stays the image for this second.

0:28- The same information is on the screen, but now it seems as though the camera is moving closer to the machine being shown.

0:29: The camera is moving closer to the machine, with the same information as before.

0:30-The video ends, advertising another video about how this one was made.

Visual Rhetoric—alaska

0.01 The video starts with what we assume to be a family of four walking down the sidewalk that has cars parked along the side. Its looks to be a big neighborhood. All four of them a looking down at their phones. The boy has earphones in and so does the girl. None of them are talking to each other; they are all quiet and in their our world.

0.04 The women stops and points to something off screen while the camera zooms in onto her phone. The screen shows a website for discovering a park or forest near you.

0.06 They resume walking and the camera focuses on the little girl. She looks so surprised and begins to take out her earphones. The background looks to be some sort of park. It has a park sign in the back and many trees.

0.07 The camera angle changes to all of the family and shows them walking towards a pond or a lake. The parents are holding hands and the kids are a little bit in front of the parents but are also on either side of them.

0.09 The camera zooms in onto the little girl again. She is crouching down towards the lake looking at her reflection in the water.

0.11 The little girl starts to make funny faces into the water. Sticking her tongue out and closing her eyes.

0.12 The next scene is of the kids crouching down on rocks across from each other while a little stream of water goes in between them. They have sticks and they are playing with the water. The area around them is very tall grass and looks a bit cornered or sectioned off. The screen then says streaming.

0.15 The camera shows the father pointing at something offscreen showing his daughter. They both look very happy. The camera shows a black bird with an orange and white wing on a tree branch. The screen then says tweet.

0.18 The little boy is crouched down looking at the ground that has a pile of leaves and sticks. He then moves a leaf and it shows a close up of a snail. The screen then says search results.

0.22 The little boy picks up the snail and shows his family. They all seem so happy and surprised.

0.23 The little boy then starts to swing his sister around by holding her hands and her flying off the ground.

0.25 The family is walking towards the camera while the mom goes and grabs the little girl by the shoulders and gives her a little hug while the father and the son laugh. The screen then says connected.

0.27 The screen shows the family walking away from the camera in an open field and the screen says find a great local park or forest. Discovertheforest.org
