Visual Rewrite – thebeard

0:01 – The video starts out with a car driving across the screen. It looks like an old car making the scene seems older. There is a passenger in the car so there is at least two people in the car. In the background of the first second there are lights hanging on a building. It also kind of looks like there is other cars behind the first car. It looks like there might be multiple people in the car.

This first car might be going to the building behind it with the lights or maybe leaving. Maybe there were also just driving past it.

0:02 – In the next second you can see a couple more cars parked, possible at a dinner or maybe a bar. At the farthest car there is a couple of people standing around. From the way that the male is leaning he may be arguing with the girl standing at the car with the door open. Maybe she is trying to get away from him or not let him drive maybe. They may also just be talking and having fun. They are both white.

There is writing on the building behind them but it is hard to tell what it says. It looks like a restaurant though for sure. From the look of the cars it looks like maybe the 80s. It is late at night which makes me think they are at a bar and they may be heading home from a night of drinking.

0:03 – In this scene is shows a blonde women who looks like she may be looking at a person behind where the camera is positioned. The girl has long curly blonde hair. Her hair style looks like a style from the 80s. It looks like she is wearing a long sleeve shirt, maybe a jacket. It makes me think that it is defiantly not a summer month if she has long sleeves on. There is also a man standing next to her, he is pretty close to her so he might be her boyfriend. He kind of looks like he is leaning in to kiss her. He is also dressed like he would be from the 80s. He has brown hair and big round classes. He is also wearing a jacket so it is probably not a summer month.

0:04 – During this second they start to lean towards each other like they are going to kiss but she starts to talk to him about something. There may be things going on behind them but it is really hard to tell because of the quality of the video.

0:05 – He seems really disappointed that they did not kiss. You start to see a car door that the girl is leaning on and it looks like the same door and people that were standing at the car in the second second of the video. It starts to look like there could be people behind them in this scene but it is still hard to tell.

0:06 – The start of this scene is the man and women kissing so he was finally able to kiss her about she said something to him. There is nothing much that really changed in this scene from the scene before other than they kissed.

0:07 – In this scene another girl walks in front of the two kissing and jumps into the car they are standing at. She is holding a bottle of something, probably beer. This new girl has long brown hair and also a jacket on. This makes me think that they are standing outside of a bar and they are heading home for the night.

0:08 – This new girl gets into the drivers side door and slides across the bench seat. The two that were standing outside the car kissing sit in the back of the car. They might be waiting for someone else to come and drive the car because none of them are sitting in the drivers seat. From what it looks the brown haired girl is the only person holding a drink.

0:09 – This scene starts with a guy in a red Letterman jacket. He is probably an athlete in either high school or college. Probably college if they are at a bar and drinking. He has dark blonde hair from what i can see, it is still hard to tell because of the quality. It looks like there is a car door next to him so he is probably the driver that the three others are waiting for. Just from the way he looks it looks like he has had something to drink and should not be driving. There are people behind him at the building that they have been at. It looks like people standing at the doorway and someone right behind him leaving.

0:10 – This second is the guy in the red Letterman jacket walking closer to the car with the other three in it. You can see the guy in the backseat still getting in the car. I can now see that he also has a bottle of beer in his hand. There is more people leaving the bar they are at and also more people walking to go into it. The guy in the red is definitely driving the car and should not be.

0:11 – The guy in the red looks like he might have said something funny to the other guy because he has a big smile on his face or he might just be drunk. They look kinda of young, maybe in high school or young college students. They are getting in the car to leave and go somewhere. possibly home but they should not be driving because they have been driving.

0:12 – They both jump into the car, the one in the red driving, I can now see that he has a bottle in his hand as well and should not be driving. That is one of the dumbest things to do. It does not seem like they are underage since they were at a bar and walk out with bottle of beer. When the two guys get into the car the two girls are talking about something, It is hard to tell if the girl in the back in drinking but the girl in the front has a bottle in her hand still. Hopefully they do not drive away but they probably will.

0:13 – As the two guys finish getting into the car the driver hands the girl in the passenger seat his bottle and goes to turn the car on. He kind of drunkenly hands the girl his bottle so he should for sure not be driving. The two in the back are sitting pretty close so it makes me think they are dating.

0:14 – The guy in the back seat leans forward to tell to guy driving. Hopefully he is asking him if he is alright to drive. I hope that the guy says he is not but I know that he wont and he will say he is fine to drive even though he probably is not fine.

0:15 – They continue to talk about something in this second. Probably something about the night or if the guy in the red can drive. The girl in the front seat is still looking towards the girl in the back probably still talking about something. Maybe they are talking about how the night is going or maybe what they are going to do after they leave.

0:16 – The guy in the backseat is leaning over talking to the guy in the red still, he has a look of concern on his face. It seems he might be telling the guy not to drive or asking if he is alright to drive. The guy in the front seat seems like he is telling him he is fine and to not worry about him. He probably has on had a few drinks but he should still not drive even if he only had a few drinks.

0:17 – The guy in the front starts to say something back to the other guy. Possibly saying that he is fine to drive.

0:18 – The guy in the back sits back in his seat fine with what the driver said. Seems like they are going to start driving away which they probably should not be doing.

0:19 – The girl in the back seems fine with whats going on because she is smiling or she has no idea what is going on and is just really drunk. The guy in the back starts to put his arm around the girl next to him. They are more than likely dating.

0:20 – This shot shows all 4 of them in the car. The girl in the front seems like be closer to the driver now. They are probably also dating. The guy in the red seems like he is trying to start the car now.

0:21 – This second is the driver trying to find the whole to put the guy in for the car. He is struggling to put the key in so he should for sure not be driving. He is probably more drunk than he thinks he is.

0:22 – He finally found the hole for the key and starts the car.

0:23 – This second show two skeletons in the back seat like they have been dead for years. Maybe it is just to show that drunk driving kills and instead of using actual dead bodies or ones that are meant to look dead they make them skeletons. It seems really bright almost as if there was an explosion.

0:24 – This second shows the front two people also as skeletons now like they are all dead or have died. The care also looks like it is not in good condition. It is hard to tell from the quality but it is for sure not in the condition it was before they drove.

0:25 – It is now darker, if there was an explosion is is might be all smokey now. Probably aftermath of an explosion.

0:26 – This scene is a human hand of the left of the screen going towards the middle of the screen. And another hand on the other side that is a skeleton hand. They are moving towards each other like they are about to shake hands.  On the screen above the hands it says “Drinking and driving can kill a friendship.” The four people in the car definitely drove and died because they were drunk.

0:27 – The two hands start to shake almost like they were friends but now the one on the right has died and they aren’t friends anymore.

0:28 – Basically the hands are just on the screen now and the video fades to black and ends.

Visual Rewrite– Splash305

0:00- In this image there is an asian boy sitting on the center cushion looking at his phone on a tan, new looking leather couch, it seems to be his house. It seems that way because in the corner of the room we see a photo of what seems to be a husband and wife. There is also a thermostat, which gives the feeling of control to change has he pleases. Plus there is a fleece blanket bunched up next to him which gives off the feeling of comfort in one’s own home. He is wearing a black sweater and gray sweat pants so it might be the winter time. There is a glass door in the corner of the room and we can see what looks like a shed of some sort.

0:02- The same boy has switched places, still on his phone but now in a library. Wearing a different blue sweater but we cannot see his pants, his outfit choice still project it being winter time. He is sitting at a desk in the library with books around him but he is not reading them. The boy seems more interested in his phone rather than all the books around him. It doesn’t look like he in in a school library because all the books look to be covered in laminate, like they do in public libraries.

0:03- The boy has moved places again, this time to a gym. He is still on his phone and looks like he is doing sit-ups. He is now wearing a white T-shirt with a yellow sweat band around his head, and a watch around his wrist. Around him are free weights like a squat rack and a bench press but no people, which might suggest he enjoys working out alone or he has nobody to work out with. The expression on his face hasn’t changed in any of the scenes, he keeps the same one. He looks like he doesn’t care what is happening around him and all he’s worried about is what’s on his phone.

0:04- Now the boy has moved into what looks like a mall cafeteria, and is still on his phone. He is not worried about the people around him nor does he look like he is socializing with them, which could indicate he doesn’t like the people around him and the people he’d rather spend time with aren’t with him so he’s talking to them on his phone. He is sitting next to another boy in a red hoodie who appears to be eating maybe talking with friends. He is wearing a gray long sleeved shirt with a T-shirt underneath, which still indicates cold weather if he has to wear two types of shirts. There are strangers around him eating and talking at other tables and he seems to be the only one distracted by his phone.

0:05- The boy looks like he is at a party, maybe his birthday party because there is a cupcake right in front of him with a candle in it that’s lit. He is sitting on his phone not paying attention to the cupcake or the people around him. The people around him are all standing around him at the table, one looks to be clapping, others smiling maybe singing happy birthday and having a good time. He is wearing a nicer white blue stripped sweater but still only interested in his phone.

0:06- The boy is alone on a carousel sitting on a horse while on his phone, which could indicate he is there before it has opened to the public or he paid to have the carousel to himself. His expression is still the same and he doesn’t look to be having that much fun on a ride that is supposed to be fun. He is now wearing a cream long sleeved shirt with a T-shirt underneath still indicating the cold weather outside. He doesn’t seem to be bothered that he is alone because he has his phone.

0:07- The scene has changed to him with a girl sitting on a couch that looks fabric, maybe at her house because he had a leather couch. She has her arm on his shoulder trying to talk to him but he is only paying attention to his phone. Maybe she is his girlfriend and she is trying to get his attention but he doesn’t care, maybe she’s even upset that he isn’t paying attention to her. He is wearing the same sweater he wore in the scene at his birthday party. There are a lot cactuses behind them so maybe the girl’s parents are really into nature.

0:08- The boy is back in his house so it seems and he has his phone in his hand, the camera shot is being taken from inside the fridge and he is closing the door which could indicate he doesn’t want any of the food he saw in the fridge or he knew what he wanted, grabbed it and went.

0:09- He is now laying in his bed and is underneath the covers but still on his phone. He looks like he is hiding so maybe he’s supposed to be asleep, maybe his parents check on him throughout the night to make sure he’s in bad and getting a good night sleep. But he’d rather play on his phone.

0:09- The scene has switched to another house, maybe his friend’s house and he is standing on one side of the ping pong table, maybe he doesn’t feel like playing or doesn’t like ping pong. It looks like he is trying to film his friends playing ping pong. He is wearing a T-shirt and sweat pants, so maybe that represents that the season is changing or his friends house has the heat on blast. His facial expression has still not changed.

0:10- This scene he is on an escalator that looks like it could be in a mall and is seems to be going upward. There are no people around so maybe the mall is closing and he is still on his phone not in a rush to leave the mall. He is wearing a worn out red hat and a puffy blue winter jacket so it must still be the winter time. In the background, the lights in the mall seem to be out so maybe the mall is in fact closed.

0:11- Now it looks like he is at a party with people all around. The room is dark but lights are flashing and people are having a good time but he is on his phone paying no attention to them. Maybe he was talked into going to the party and doesn’t want to be there.

0:12- He is back laying in his bed laying on his side with the covers pulled over his head, still on his phone. There is a window next to his bed and the blinds are closed but there is light shining through so it is still daylight outside. But he is sitting in the dark alone in his room.

0:15- The scenes that I have stated above where all played again multiple times in a very fast pace.

0:16- He is now sitting in a car nn the drivers side with his phone in his hands. The car seems to be in park and he does not have his seatbelt on, so he might be waiting for someone he is also in the car alone.

0:17- The boy put his phone down on the center console and it is showing us the conversation between him and someone else. He told the other person he was driving now so he would talk to them later.

0:21- He started the car and is showed him driving away and words popped up on the screen that read “Not Here, Never Here.”

0:23- Next is showed the car continuing to drive away and another caption came up that said “Don’t Text and Drive” and then the ad was over.

3. Visual Rhetoric Rewrite- Yoshi

0:00- The video starts off with what seems to be a nice sophisticated man. His short orange brown hair is slicked back with gel. His face has some stubbles on his cheek. He looks like he shaves but not everyday. He seems as though he doesn’t care about his appearance.  He is wearing a light blue button down shirt with a red tie. His shirt doesn’t look pressed. He looks like he is in the working-class, possibly going to an office job. His face is brightened, because he is looking out a window. His mouth is open, and his hand is going towards his mouth as if he is eating something. In the background there are brown cabinets against the wall, therefore he is probably in his kitchen. He is eating over the sink, maybe he is in a rush to get to work.

0:01-0:02- The camera has now backed up, and a woman is to the left of the frame. Her hair is tied in a ponytail, and she has on a nice olive green shirt on. She is reading the newspaper, with a glass of orange juice next to her and a plate. They are both probably eating breakfast together, before the man has to go to work. They are most likely husband and wife. A little further back to the right is the nicely cleaned up man. He has a plate in his hand, because he was eating breakfast. You can clearly see the setting now. The man is by the sink looking out the window. Their stove is connected to their counter next to the sink. Their appliances are stainless steel.  The woman is standing on the opposite side of the counter than the man. Their cabinets look a little old fashion wood.

0:03-0:04-  Is a close up of the man washing his dish. Then it cuts to his wife smiling because he is cleaning up after himself. He seems very tidy and helpful. The wife looks very pleasant. Her hair is light blonde and pulling into a low ponytail. She looks very clean, she has no fly aways her hair is very slick. She has makeup on, it looks very neutral. The background has a striped blue and white chair. It almost looks like it could be a beach house.

0:05-0:06- Shows the man walking out to his car with a leather bag around his arm. He is looking over to his left at his neighbor, with his hand raised waving to his neighbor. There is an orange cord tangled up on the floor, his neighbor is bent over trying to up tangle this cord. The neighborhood the man lives in looks middle-class. He has an average everyday car. There is big trees in between The mans house and his neighbor. I think the man doesn’t care to much about his or his house appearance.

0:07-0:09- Shows the man with the neighbors hose in his right hand. The hose is on, and the man is spraying what looks to be the neighbors bush. To the right of the screen you can see the neighbor slightly blurred. He looks elderly. He is short, olive skinned, and he has big squared glasses. He has a huge smile on his face, because the nice looking man is helping him out.

0:10-0:13- The nice man has now made it to work it looks like. His setting looks to be in an office break room. There is a bulletin board with papers hanging on it. There is a man and a woman sitting at a round table with mugs in front of them. They are both dressed professionally. The man has a button down shirt on with a vest over top. And the woman has a nice dress shirt on with a cardigan over it. In the background is the nice man with a coffee pot in his hand, that is filled with coffee. He walks over to the round table his ‘co workers’ are sitting at, and pours the coffee into their cup. The man the proceeds to look up, and smiles to the nice man. They are all dressed business casual.

0:14-0:15- Is the nice man in line at the grocery store. He is holding a bunch of vegetables in his hand. He looks at the man behind him. The man behind him has a pineapple in his hand. The nice man the proceeds to nudge his head signaling the older man behind him to get in front of him in line. The man with the pineapple in his hand lifts the pineapple, nods, and smiles thanking the nice man. The older man behind him steps in front of him, and gets in front of him.

0:16- The nice man is now in the car. Outside of the car’s windows is blurry. I looks like the nice man is driving. He is looking over his shoulder and down. It looks like he is looking at the center console of the car. He has sort of a confused look on his face as if he is trying to read something.

0:17- It is a close up of a phone. It says 6:40 so maybe the man just got done work. The phone is lit up with what seems to be a text message notification. The nice man’s hand comes into the screen, as he reaches over and grabs his phone off the passenger seat.

0:18- The nice looking man is still driving because outside the windows is still blurry. The man is now looking down in front of him. One of his hands is on the steering wheel, and the other hand is holding his phone. He is has a half smirk on his face, as he is reading the message on his phone.

0:19- This is an overview of the mans car coming to a stop at the intersection. From the scene before you know he is still looking at his phone. There is pedestrians crossing the road, and it seems like the nice man is going to hit them. The area looks like it is down town. The people crossing the street are women they appear to be well dressed. There is a lady in blue sitting on a bench next to the mans car. It appears to me that she is waiting for a bus.

0:20-0:21- A red car with his passenger window down pulls up next to the man, and he smiles at him but quickly realizes the nice man is on his phone. So the guy in the car next to him changes his facial expression to a look of disappointment. He has on a green hoodie he looks casual.

0:22-0:23- The man is looking at his phone smiling. The man looks over to his left, and see the guy looking at him. The young man looks embarrassed to be on his phone. He has his seatbelt on. He begins to turn his head to the other direction

0:24- The man is now looking over to his right, and it is the older woman in a blue shirt that was sitting on a bench. She looks very sweet and she is smiling at him. But then she realizes he is on his phone, and she gives him a mean look. She raises her eyebrows and opens her eyes big.

0:25- The man realizes and he drops his phone and looks forward again. His face looks embarrassed like it about to get red.

0:26- The scene cuts back to the older woman and zooms in on her staring at him. It slows zooms in on her face making her seem scary.

0:27- The camera cuts back to the nice man and he drops his phone and nods his heads towards her to show he acknowledged her. Then the man looks forward and proceeds to drive away.

Visual Rewrite–Theadmiral

0:00, 00:1- A younger asian man looks to be sitting on the couch possibly in his home. There is a blanket, rolled up next to him. We also see a thermostat to our left and over his right shoulder. This could have been done intentionally by the director to give it a more homey feeling, and not just a set. He is looking at his phone, and appears to be texting. He sits on the middle cushion, probably because the director wants to make him the center of focus. He There looks to be a black and white picture on the wall, again probably for decor of the house. I cannot make out the image, it looks to be some sort of mountain setting. There is a red barn or some sort of shed out back, if you look through the sliding glass door.

0:02- The man is now sitting in a library. He is still on his phone, He is in different clothes, now wearing a grayish, blue sweater. This sweater could suggest it is winter time, because he was wearing another sweater in the first scene with a wool blanket raveled up. His hair is still in the same fashion, the kind of wave hairdo I used to wear in third grade. He looks to be sitting in the back of the library, with a copious amount of books behind to him. I cannot make out any titles on the books, probably done to not take away from the actor. There is one book to the right of his head that stands out tho, only because of its yellow color. The title of the video is “project yellow” so I think the yellow book can be a small sign used by the director.

0:03- The man has changed scenes again to a gym now. He looks to be doing some sit ups while texting. His outfit changed again, to a plain white shirt, and a yellow headband. He is still texting, fully focused on his phone. The gym he is attending does not look very occupied. You can see one man in the mirror, looking to be doing some tricep pushdowns, and the Tv is on, so we know he is not alone in the gym. He is now wearing a silver watch on his left wrist. The watch on his wrist seems unusual to me because it does not look like a fitbit, or some sort of runners watch, but a dressier watch.  There is a hand sanitizer dispenser to the right of his head. The texting while he is doing all of his actions suggests that a majority of his life is spent on his phone, and that with every task he does, or every where he goes, he is glued to his phone.

0:04- The man changed scenes from the gym, now to some sort of outdoor patio of a restaurant. There is a person, removed to his right, our left, that looks to be sitting down, and eating. We can tell he is eating because he is bringing something to his mouth, and that is usually how I eat a burger, so I think it is safe to assume he is eating some sort of finger food. He is wearing a long sleeve shirt, and the people in the background are wearing heavier clothing as well, suggesting that it again is colder outside where they are. The man is still on his phone, texting, but he has changed his outfit, or shirt at least. There are people in the background, it looks like they too are eating.

0:05- The man has changed scenes again to it appears to be his birthday party. It is safe to assume it is his party because there are a bunch of people standing up around him, and his is sitting with a cupcake with a candle in it in front of him. He is texting, as he has been in every other scene. The people to the left and the right of him are barely visible. This is done to show that the focus was not on the people at his birthday party, but that he was so focused on his phone. It is kind of an allusion toward the term “tunnel vision” where you cannot see anything around you, but you are so focused and engulfed in one thing. His shirt has changed again, to a white quarter zip sweater with blue stripes on it. He has a black watch on now.

0:06- Now we see the man in yet another location, on a carousel. He is still texting. There is nobody near him on the carousel. He is now wearing a cream colored sweater. In all of the scenes so far, he has been wearing long sleeved shirts, or sweaters. The director could have done this to keep the seasons the same, and to show that he is probably staying around town. The top of the carousel is yellow, which again could be another thing like the book in the library leading back to the title of the video.

0:07- The man is still texting, but now he is on a date with a red headed girl. I do not know where they are, maybe her house because it looks like a home, from the plants behind his head, and there looks to be a kitchen behind him and to the right. They are sitting on a couch, and he is wearing the same white quarter zip sweater from a few scenes ago. She is dressed in all black, and kind of out of the light, bringing more focus to the man texting, and so much her and their date.I do not know if it is the quality of the video or not, but again the female to his left looks to be in less light than. Probably showing that the focus of the video is more towards the man texting and not what he is doing.

0:08- The camera is now placed in the back of an open refrigerator. We see the man texting, and closing the refrigerator door. When we look at the refrigerator, it does not seem to have much in it, maybe suggesting he is a “broke college student” because he looks around our age. The contents of someones refrigerator can sometimes show wealth. If you can afford a lot of food, you are probably a little better well off than a person who has nothing in their refrigerator.

0:09- The next scene is the same man in the dark, bundled up in a blanket. He appears to be laying in his bed, with nothing but the light from his phone shining on his face. When we think of bundled up, we think of warmth, and the womb of our mothers. That is what the root of that comfortability is, so the director could have done this to show that his security is his phone, because he is constantly with it, and he is constantly using it.

0:10- The same man is texting, sitting in front of a ping pong table, with a blurred out white ball on the screen. The table is by a window, and it looks to be kind of cloudy outside. He is sitting on the arm of a couch, so this could be in somebody’s basement or somebody’s game room. Him sitting on the arm of the couch shows that the director is trying to make him the center of focus on the screen, because of the positioning of the couch, just like they tried to do in the first scene. He is now wearing a black shirt and a pair of grey pants.

0:10-0:11- We see the man in two different scenes in one second. The speed of the scene change is beginning to speed up. In the first scene, his is in a blue puff jacket with a hat and a blurred out label. The label is probably blurred out because they didn’t want copyright infringements. He looks to be on an escalator at the mall. He could have been meeting some friends but he looked to be alone. If this is the case, then he is shopping so he might have some disposable income, so he might not be a broke college student. He is still texting. In the second scene, he is back in the white sweater, and at some sort of club, or house party with lights flashing. The man is texting in both scenes still.

0:11- In the later parts of the eleventh second, we see yet another scene change of the same man still texting. He is now sitting on a blue park bench, in a jacket. The trees in the background are bare, and he is wearing a jacket, so it is safe to assume that it is winter time. This goes along with the winter theme that has been going on, with the long sleeves and the blankets that were shown. The cold theme could have been chosen because it is “cold” to text and drive because it does take many lives every year.

0:12-14- The twelfth second also has three rapid scene changes. They are all with the man texting, but just in different locations, and in different clothes. The first scene, it looks to me that he is on the second story of a mall. He is wearing a grayish black shirt, and texting and walking. The next scene is him in bed with blankets over his head. His face is lit up by the light from his phone again, but it still looks to be day time from the light coming in from the window in the back of his room. He also is shown back in the gym, behind a man doing some sort of benching. He is still texting (which is not the proper thing to do if he is spotting somebody in a gym, like he is shown in the picture.) In the thirteenth second, they show him back in the mall on the second story. After a short amount of time, he is shown back at the restaurant outside eating, and then back at the gym, but no longer doing sit ups. He also is shown back on his date, back at the ping pong table, back at his birthday party, back at the library, and then back on the carousel.

0:15- They show another rapid burst of scenes starting with him closing the refrigerator, at the ping pong table again, on the escalator at the mall, back at the party with the lights, back at the park, then back in bed.

0:16- He is shown still texting back on the second story of the mall, and then behind the wheel of his car, in a scene we haven’t seen yet. He is texting, in a blue plaid shirt, with no seatbelt on.

0:17-0:19- It goes to the side shot of him in the car with the passenger side, front door open. We see the right side of his body, and he finally puts his phone down. It then goes to an unlocked phone screen, with the rest of the messages blocked out, but only focusing on one message saying “Ok. Driving now so I’ll ttyl.” It stays on the same picture, and then the words “not here” pop up in white letters at the top right of the picture.

0:20- It shows the man driving off, with both hands on the wheel. The words “not here” show up on the screen again, and then underneath of that, a text bubble that says “never here” shows up.

0:22- The last scene shows the car driving away, and at the bottom shows the words “don’t text and drive.”

0:00- Looks like this scene is taken place in today’s time because we can still see that people go to appointments. In this scene we see a woman and a man are in an office in a building. We can tell they are in a building because we can see the body of trees because only the first floor would be able to see the tree trunks which means the office must be on a higher floor level. The office is like an ordinary office theres cubes in the center with executive offices surrounding them. In the office there windows sills to look outside and the lobby where the cubes are located. The man is a white older man who is wears glasses and seems like he is one of the executives because only people higher in position get to make the decisions of a company. He seems to be comfortable not only because he is an executive but because he is also in his office. It looks like he is beginning shake hands with a black woman, he wears a nice light charcoal suit with a baby blue buttoned down dress shirt, meaning that he is dressing business casual. His office has a plant inside with a desk that has a paperweight and pencil holders and some sort of certificate hanging from the wall. The black woman is there to discuss a proposal or just to have a meeting with the man she is reaching out to shake his hand. She wears a black suit with a black appropriate skirt and her hair is braided and tied up; she must’ve had to do that to look more professional because having her hair in a different manner would give off a bad first impression. Later the man asks her to sit with is hand gesturing. There is a man outside of the executive office in one of the cubes holding a phone to his ear perhaps talking to a client while looking at his desktop but he is blurred out. There seems to be another cube in front of him but we can not see who is there.

0:01- They are both sitting and the camera is angled from the woman’s right shoulder and faced to the man. The man looks amazed but also having a curious look on his face. The man looks like early or mid fifties with his lips puckered up a bit. His hair is receding a bit where it looks like he has a bigger forehead. His eyes are green.

0:02- The camera is again outside the office and near the cubes now we can see the woman better she wears a light orange buttoned down dress shirt and by the looks of her face it looks like she is waiting to answer a question from the man who is looking at her with is hands up and crossed in front of him near his face. The man seems like he is getting a better observation of her and at the same time asking her a few questions. As the meeting is going on everyone outside his office are working the man with the phone is still there but there is one man walking by the office almost blocking the man, he is also blurred out a bit. As the second keeps going he is talking to her.

0:03-  Now the camera is angled on the man’s left shoulder facing the woman’s face. She looks puzzled but at the same time it looks like she is about to answer the man. The woman’s eyes are brown, she has a young face seems like she just got out of college.

0:04- She just answered a question she had for the man with a smile on her face. She is now waiting for his answer and hopes the answer she gave was good enough.

0:05- The camera switched back to where the cubes are located and is looking through the window sills of the executive office.

0:06-0:08 – The camera is up in her face, we can see her mouth open ready to speak with her eyes looking very concerned. Now I see that on her left her she has an earring.

0:09- Now the camera is angled on her shoulder facing him, he is looking down either at her resume, desk, or a gesture of disappointment who knows. His face has changed a bit, now he has a more serious face and left wondering from her answer.

0:10- He is now beginning to talk while leaning back in his chair but still looking downward with no eye contact. We can tell a person if they seem confident and comfortable he/she is definitely in high rank of position because not just any employee can just lean but in a chair all day long.

0:11- He has a serious look on his face once he asks her a question but his face is more rude than serious like there is something bothering him.

0:12-0:16- The camera turns from him quickly to her from his left shoulder to her face and she begins to answer to him but her face expression is sharp, confident she knows what she wants.

0:17- Quickly turned for a close up on the man who listened very closely to her answer but is now thinking of a question to ask her again.

0:18-0:20- The camera faces the man and he looks her straight in the eyes and is slightly smiling but questioning whether to hire her or look for someone else to do the job he wants to be fulfilled and then gives his final thoughts.

0:21- The camera is right outside the window sill looking at her. She looks like she is about to get up. The office has more detail he has a dial up phone on his desk. Near the the widows to look outside he has a shelve with books lined up together.

0:22- The woman stands up and reaches out to shake the man’s hand which is usually the conclusion of any meeting.

0:23- The camera is near the widow sill to look into his office and you see the man holding out his hand to shake the woman’s hand but then we realize she is not there and there is no one in front of him just two empty chairs.

0:24-0:25 – The camera focuses on him with his puzzled and concerned face looking beyond his desk. It seems like he’s having a flashback to the time where he chose to hire her and is waiting for another recipient to be just like her.

0:26-0:27 – The camera is angled from his left shoulder and is looking facing his chair there is no one sitting in it, it’s empty and facing him as well.

0:28-0:30 – The commercial ends and you see the man faded and looking downwards with white words in the middle of the screen reading “GRADS of LIFE. org” and Ad council copyright on the screen to the bottom right.

Visual Rhetoric Rewrite-LifeisSublime

The video I have decided to analyze is a 35 second video called Saved by the Scan.

0:00- The image is of  woman who is climbing a mountain. It seems to be cold where she is because she is wearing a jacket and boots from this point of view. The mountain has grass and dirty but the color is almost gray, giving off that cold feeling. The woman is alone, climbing this mountain with no safety precautions at all. In the background are more mountains.

0:01- In the first second she is moving up the mountain. Seeming to struggle slightly. There is fog around her. Not much as changed.

0:02- In this time the video is zoomed in on the woman, but her face is blocked by her arm, leaving room for interpretation on her emotional state. She is looking down, at her footing I assume. Her jacket isn’t really a winter coat but a light jean jacket. She has bracelets on her arm and her hair is red.

0:03- The woman is now looking up. She seems to be looking at where ever it is she is climbing towards. Her facial expression is hard to read. The way I’m taking her facial expression is she is tired of the climb.

0:04- The perceptive of the camera changes and now we are looking at the woman from down the mountain. She is not climbing on grass and dirt, but on a mountain of cigarettes. The fog is now clearly smoke. The woman is still struggling up the hill.

0:05- The woman is still climbing the cigarette filled mountain side. She looks up a little bit but we can not see her whole face just yet.

0:06- In this second, the camera zooms in on her hand (or many her foot) that is pushing through all these cigarette. The odd thing is that most of these cigarettes are full cigarettes, not all just cigarette butts. She is pushing through them.

0:07- In this second I find out that is was her foot in the previous second. The pile of cigarettes that she stepped on falls down the mountain as she continues to climb.

0:08- The mountain is now getting steeper. The cigarettes are falling all around her and it seems hard to keep her footing. Smoke is still rising from the mountain, as she tries to hold on and push her way up.

0:09- In this second the woman puts her foot up on a ledge on the mountain in order to go up.

0:10-  The camera focuses on her hand now as she digs it into the side of the cigarette mountain. The cigarettes are sticking out of dirty.

0:11- In this second we can see the other arm/hand planting into the side of the mountain in the background of the first. Moving up.

0:12- The camera is now on her face again. She seems tired and looks as though she is working very hard to get to the top of this mountain.

0:13- This second is almost the same as the last, expect the woman has turned her head to look more at what is in front of her rather than what is up head. I would assume she is looking where to put her hand this time.

0:14- The camera shifts again, and now we are looking at the woman from underneath her. We can see the direction in which she is climbing in, but not a destination. The mountain seems even more steep as last time.

0:15- This second is similar to the last. The woman has moved her leg up to keep climbing.

0:16- In this second the woman is now at the top of the mountain. She slowly is standing up to make the last couple of steps up the mountain. There is nothing at the top.

0:17-  This second is the same as the last. The woman making her final step to reach the very top of the mountain made of cigarettes.

0:18- Now the camera is zoomed in on her face. She seems to realize she is at the top but doesn’t have an expression showing if she is happy or sad. Again she looks tired. In the upper left corner there is a box of text that reads “You stopped smoking”.

0:19- The woman looks more over to her right, as if looking at the view. The text extends to now read in full, “You stopped smoking now start screening”. The woman seems to be content.

0:20- In this second she blinked and started to form a smile. The smile is not all the way there yet, but it looks like a smile one would make after they have accomplished something stressful.

0:21- She now smiles and looks directly at the camera as is starts to zoom out. She is standing on the center on the top of the mountain. Throughout the while video no grass was visible, expect for now it seems as though she is standing on some.

0:22- The camera continues to zoom out as the woman continues to smile. Standing tall.

0:23- The camera is still zooming out, showing the mountain a little bit more. The woman is still smiling.

0:24- Again, still zooming out, while she continues to stand on the top of this mountain smiling.

0:25- The image on the screen changes and is now what I think is a MRI machine or a Catscan machine. Words appear above it saying, “Talk to your doctor of learn more at”. In this second the other part of information is not visible yet.

0:26- The website at which to learn more at appears, savedbythescan.org. On the bottom of the image are organizations affiliated with this movement: the American Lung Association, Lung Force, and of course Ad Council.

0:27- This information stays the image for this second.

0:28- The same information is on the screen, but now it seems as though the camera is moving closer to the machine being shown.

0:29: The camera is moving closer to the machine, with the same information as before.

0:30-The video ends, advertising another video about how this one was made.

Ag-Gag Laws: A Resource

For awhile now I’ve been thinking about a particular counterintuitive law, but I haven’t completed my post on it yet. This is a work in progress. Perhaps you’ve heard of ag-gag laws, legislation designed to criminalize journalists who publicize the inhumane treatment of animals on commercial farms and in slaughterhouse. The counterintuitive aspect of the story is that animal respect activists were opposed to a particular law that would make it a crime not to report animal cruelty shortly after witnessing it.

You’ll never guess the grounds on which they objected to that law, but I’ll give you a chance to try. Here’s an article that will help you figure it out.

If you’re looking for help on rebuttals, refutations, and counterintuitivity, this fascinating proposal argument is rich with claims you can try your best to refute.

If you’re not squeamish, you might be able to watch this video shot by clandestine animal rights advocates to demonstrate cruelty inside meat processing plants. I warn you, it is hard to watch no matter how strong your stomach is.

I’ll most likely update this page before Friday. Be thinking about animals, how we treat them, and to what extent we need to be honest about how we produce our food.
