1.Working Hypothesis 1

I believe that those who begin to work in corporates take a turn from their moral ethics to new business ethics they learn because of their business surroundings.

1a. Working Hypothesis 2

Corporations find ethics to be a drain on profits; but every corporation claims to promote strong business ethics.

2. Topics for smaller papers

Defintion/Classification Argument

Moral ethics is different than business ethics, moral ethics is what we know what is right from wrong. Ethics are taught by our parents/guardians and but business ethics is completely different it is more about what is good for the business. Whether it is the right or wrong thing to do but whatever makes the business be more profitable will always be the right decision.

Cause/Effect Argument

The cause of so many problems are because people having a change of thought instead of using their moral ethics they learned from birth, they listen to society which have an affect on their minds. The consequences and effect of not following through the business world with business ethics is a loss of a job, and a loss of money for the business.

Rebuttal Argument

Every business lies about their business ethics. Businesses brag about their company but they are not really presenting themselves well. For example, Enron was a well known company that skyrocketed through false allocations and falsely indicating their true ethics to the world (Enron committed fraud and fixed their profits on the books).

3. Current state of research paper

My current state of my research paper could be better. I have not changed my opinion and I am solidified with my topic. Though I have learned more about the differences between moral versus business ethics. In all honesty I thought they were somewhat the same but after thorough research I found that they are completely different. I sometimes think I am done researching but I learned that there is so much more to be discovered. Hopefully the outcome of this paper will be a success. I know I will need some help starting each argument because I always get stuck.

Definition Argument – theintern

As the business world prospered and held higher standards, people’s moral ethics also took a turn as well as big well known firms. The world of business is bigger than we think it is; many people think that many businesses get away with fraud or any other kind of wrongdoings. Though I am here to prove that fact wrong, I can add that before the Sarbanes Oxley Act firms were not strictly controlled as they are now. Due to the incident that happened with Enron a huge natural gas company in Houston where they tricked the SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) into thinking that all the money they were making were from actual profits. However, all that money was fake and in reality they were in debt and losing money. The only way that Enron was ever getting away with this scandal was paying auditors from Arthur Anderson to make Enron look better to the public; as a growing and upcoming business to consider working for. Arthur Anderson not only helped Enron with a better image to the business world but financially they wrongfully reported their books falsely to cover Enron of getting caught by the SEC. Eventually the SEC caught up with Enron because of their stock shares always rising up so high. The SEC had to do an investigation on Enron and found out that they were committing one of the biggest frauds in the United States. Enron could easily have done fine without lying about their profits and asking for help to improve them company. Though they decided to take the risky route and achieve greater money in the least amount of time by committing fraud, disobeying the rules, and not sticking to their business ethics of following the rules to success without cheating. Cause of cheating Enron shut down in 2001 after being 16 years in service, and these CEO’s whose income were like millions of dollars every year, were fined so much that whatever they had could not cover it plus one of them I know for sure had to serve time in jail and his name was Jeffery Skilling who was sentenced to 24 years in prison but was reduced to only 14 years in prison. He will be released in 2017.

Not only did the SEC investigate Enron they also investigated Arthur Andersen because the auditors job is to find any fraud or errors in books. Once the SEC found dirt on Enron, Enron called the auditors. “The fired partner, David B. Duncan, called a meeting of auditors at the firm’s Houston office and ordered ”an expedited effort to destroy documents” on Oct. 23, the day after Enron disclosed that the S.E.C. had begun its inquiry, the firm said. The destruction apparently did not end until Mr. Duncan’s assistant sent an e-mail message to other secretaries on Nov. 9 that said ”stop the shredding,” the firm said. Andersen had received a subpoena from the S.E.C. the day before.” Now why couldn’t Andersen just give in to the SEC and surrender that they helped Enron instead of trying to shred all the evidence. Andersen could have been given a less painful punishment but since they messed up they paid the consequences. Andersen was one of the big 5 auditing firms in the world next to Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst and Young, and KPMG. In 2017 Andersen is no longer in existence because after this great big scandal no other companies wanted to associate with a firm who were disloyal.

People say that business ethics and moral ethics are the same but they aren’t. Moral ethics are what you learn from your parents and every of course not everyone will learn how to behave the same because every parent is different especially the way they teach their children to be. While business ethics is more of a one way streak there we must follow it one way however the rules are of that certain company. There is no other way to follow it because of how your parents taught you differently that does not fall into place within the business world. If an employee does not want to follow the firm’s rules the outcome is being fired. That is when employees start realizing how the world really works and whatever moral ethics they had are gone because of how the business world has changed them to become something they aren’t or become successful.

Safer Saws – theintern

Manufacturers

1A. “The flesh detection technology stops a blade instantly when it is touched by human flesh.”

1B. Theres a flesh detection technology that detects if human flesh is near the blade which then stops instantly.

1C. This is a factual claim because it is a personal testimony by the manufactures.

1D. There is no real evidence determining that this technology actually stops instantly, or reviews from real people who own this tool and have actually tried it.

Customers

2A. “Bosch Tool “colluded with its competitors” to develop their own version, and continued to sell their dangerous table and miter saws.”

2B. This claim states that after a discussion with their competitors they still continued to sell their dangerous tools.

2C. This statement is a factual claim because of the verified information Bosch tools told.

2D. The claim persuades me to think that Bosch could’ve had a safer tool for their consumers but they decided not to and continued to sell dangerous saws hoping that their consumers wouldn’t notice. I don’t understand why only table saws are dangerous and not the rest of the tools.

Injured Plaintiffs

5A. “The bringer of the suit is essentially claiming that his permanent and “traumatic injury” could have been prevented if Bosch and its competitors had not rejected and fought against the safety technology.”

5B. The claims states that Bosch could have prevented these lawsuits if and only if they did not reject against safety technology.

5C. This statement is very opinionated because the bringer is biased about the Bosch’s decision of not securing the safety of their consumers.

5D. The claim is very biased from a user’s perspective of a bad experience the user had. The claims state that Bosch could of prevented these incidents but theres not enough statistic evidence showing the percentage of people injured.

Steve Gass Himself

9A.  “petition from Gass, engineers at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommended that the government begin a “rulemaking process” that could result in mandatory safety standards for table saws.”

9B. This claim explains how Gass himself recommended that the government make rules towards table saws and make sure that they provide more safety.

9C. This claim is more so a proposal because Gass suggested ideas to the government without the government asking for them.

9D. Theres not evidence of the petition succeeding or if the government ever agreed to it. Gass thinks he knows best but does he? This claim can be arguable.

Power tool product reviewers

10A. “Existing Underwriters Laboratories document ANSI/UL 987 includes provisions for maintaining safe distance from saw blades and instructions for proper use.”

10B. This claim clarifies that under this document “ANSI/UL 987” there are safety regulations to be followed.

10C. This statement is a proposal claim because it suggests the consumers to think twice before standing to close to the blades.

10D. The claim is reasonable and gives a precaution that users should consider. However it contradicts the product tools purpose of it being safe and a document should not be stating the danger there is.

Proposal+5 – theintern

For my research essay I will be examining the business ethics and corporate social responsibility and searching for reasons about companies falling. In one case study by Peter Arlow in the journal of business ethics discussed around what age do people show poor business ethics and corporate social responsibility. Arlow’s research results came out to be that college students’ ethical attitudes are influenced more by exposure to the to the larger socio-cultural norms than by education in specific disciplines, which may have implications for business ethics instructions.

The most common mistake for the lack of ethics and CSR is on business owners who don’t set rules and standards for a company. The world itself puts our young minds fresh out of college into difficult positions where we must make a choice to keep our jobs or else we get cut.  Having business ethics is important but without corporate social responsibility a business can not succeed. When we think of businesses everyone always wonders why a specific business is failing. The main problem usually comes from disloyal employees who are unethical but not because of how their parents raise them it’s how society raises them.

The article also explains how CSR is not only in the United States but Europe and beyond has gained that momentum and have noticed that this CSR rule has increased production due to the benefits that employees also get for working for a company like health benefits, fair wage, and protection.

What it Proves: It proves that for CSR to succeed in a business there must be a lot of control either respecting the rules that are voluntary put by management or mandatorily put by the NBSs. Other than respecting the rules, the employees must follow up on them and act upon it or else they will get fired.

What it Proves: It proves that not doing the right thing always goes bad and people/the world will find out and instead of the company having net income they will result in having net loss.

Visual Rewrite – theintern

0:00- Looks like this scene is taken place in today’s time because we can still see that people go to appointments. In this scene we see a woman and a man are in an office in a building. We can tell they are in a building because we can see the body of trees because only the first floor would be able to see the tree trunks which means the office must be on a higher floor level. The office is like an ordinary office theres cubes in the center with executive offices surrounding them. In the office there windows sills to look outside and the lobby where the cubes are located. The man is a white older man who is wears glasses and seems like he is one of the executives because only people higher in position get to make the decisions of a company. He seems to be comfortable not only because he is an executive but because he is also in his office. It looks like he is beginning shake hands with a black woman, he wears a nice light charcoal suit with a baby blue buttoned down dress shirt, meaning that he is dressing business casual. His office has a plant inside with a desk that has a paperweight and pencil holders and some sort of certificate hanging from the wall. The black woman is there to discuss a proposal or just to have a meeting with the man she is reaching out to shake his hand. She wears a black suit with a black appropriate skirt and her hair is braided and tied up; she must’ve had to do that to look more professional because having her hair in a different manner would give off a bad first impression. Later the man asks her to sit with is hand gesturing. There is a man outside of the executive office in one of the cubes holding a phone to his ear perhaps talking to a client while looking at his desktop but he is blurred out. There seems to be another cube in front of him but we can not see who is there.

0:01- They are both sitting and the camera is angled from the woman’s right shoulder and faced to the man. The man looks amazed but also having a curious look on his face. The man looks like early or mid fifties with his lips puckered up a bit. His hair is receding a bit where it looks like he has a bigger forehead. His eyes are green.

0:02- The camera is again outside the office and near the cubes now we can see the woman better she wears a light orange buttoned down dress shirt and by the looks of her face it looks like she is waiting to answer a question from the man who is looking at her with is hands up and crossed in front of him near his face. The man seems like he is getting a better observation of her and at the same time asking her a few questions. As the meeting is going on everyone outside his office are working the man with the phone is still there but there is one man walking by the office almost blocking the man, he is also blurred out a bit. As the second keeps going he is talking to her.

0:03-  Now the camera is angled on the man’s left shoulder facing the woman’s face. She looks puzzled but at the same time it looks like she is about to answer the man. The woman’s eyes are brown, she has a young face seems like she just got out of college.

0:04- She just answered a question she had for the man with a smile on her face. She is now waiting for his answer and hopes the answer she gave was good enough.

0:05- The camera switched back to where the cubes are located and is looking through the window sills of the executive office.

0:06-0:08 – The camera is up in her face, we can see her mouth open ready to speak with her eyes looking very concerned. Now I see that on her left her she has an earring.

0:09- Now the camera is angled on her shoulder facing him, he is looking down either at her resume, desk, or a gesture of disappointment who knows. His face has changed a bit, now he has a more serious face and left wondering from her answer.

0:10- He is now beginning to talk while leaning back in his chair but still looking downward with no eye contact. We can tell a person if they seem confident and comfortable he/she is definitely in high rank of position because not just any employee can just lean but in a chair all day long.

0:11- He has a serious look on his face once he asks her a question but his face is more rude than serious like there is something bothering him.

0:12-0:16- The camera turns from him quickly to her from his left shoulder to her face and she begins to answer to him but her face expression is sharp, confident she knows what she wants.

0:17- Quickly turned for a close up on the man who listened very closely to her answer but is now thinking of a question to ask her again.

0:18-0:20- The camera faces the man and he looks her straight in the eyes and is slightly smiling but questioning whether to hire her or look for someone else to do the job he wants to be fulfilled and then gives his final thoughts.

0:21- The camera is right outside the window sill looking at her. She looks like she is about to get up. The office has more detail he has a dial up phone on his desk. Near the the widows to look outside he has a shelve with books lined up together.

0:22- The woman stands up and reaches out to shake the man’s hand which is usually the conclusion of any meeting.

0:23- The camera is near the widow sill to look into his office and you see the man holding out his hand to shake the woman’s hand but then we realize she is not there and there is no one in front of him just two empty chairs.

0:24-0:25 – The camera focuses on him with his puzzled and concerned face looking beyond his desk. It seems like he’s having a flashback to the time where he chose to hire her and is waiting for another recipient to be just like her.

0:26-0:27 – The camera is angled from his left shoulder and is looking facing his chair there is no one sitting in it, it’s empty and facing him as well.

0:28-0:30 – The commercial ends and you see the man faded and looking downwards with white words in the middle of the screen reading “GRADS of LIFE. org” and Ad council copyright on the screen to the bottom right.

Critical Reading – theintern

Section 18

1.”But here we’ve got lasagna, and salad with an array of dressing choices, and a store-bought frosted Bundt cake with chocolate chips in it!”

  • Dressing choices: We can assume the word dressing choices indicates that there was a variety of dressings and the people wouldn’t have to just choose one.
  • The store bought cake can be assumed that Brannan does not know how to bake a cake or just doesn’t have the time to bake a cake.
  • By having an exclamation point end with chocolate chips means that Brannan loves chocolate chips and is excited to have them in the cake.

2. “There is no dining-room table—when they bought the house years ago, they thought they’d finish it up real nice like they did with another house, before the war, but nobody’s up for that now, so we all huddle around the coffee table in the living room.”

  • Years ago: It seems like they were financially stabled because as they said that they finished it up real nice.
  • War: This war really screwed the whole family up. The family thought that they would be same even after the war but it left heart broken because the man of the house Caleb was suffering from PTSD which back pedaled their plans.
  • No dining room table could mean that they are not financially stabled and can’t afford to buy one or that the house that they bought did not have the space for the table.
  • Huddled: By the word “huddled” the author means that the family had to make the best out of where they ate and that was on a coffee table in the living room.
  • Nobody’s up for it now: By this phrase the author sums up what the family goes through on a daily basis with the father/husband’s PTSD and that no body is normal enough or has the free time to fix up the house.

3. “And it’s lovely. Dinner lasts for hours. Brannan tries to calm Katie down despite the excitement of the visitor at dinner, while Katie shows me games and drawings as we eat.”

  • Lovely: The author describes how it’s lovely in the sense of how peaceful the environment is and how much love is being shared.
  • Visitor: The word “visitor” is used to allow the audience know the author’s acquaintance with the family.
  • Seems like Katie never sees other older people because maybe the family does not have the time/patience to meet and greet with other parents.
  • The author expresses Katie as too excited that Brannan has to calm her child down because a visitor is over where she offers the author to look at her games/drawings.

4. “Caleb makes jokes that it does indeed feel like he and Brannan have been married for-ever.”

  • Joke: The author notices that Caleb still has a sense of humor.
  • Caleb acknowledges and remembers that Brannan is his wife and that it has been a long time they’ve been married.
  • Caleb “feels” that he is married to her for-ever with the numbers in his head actually knowing.

5. “he laughs when he says this, she laughs, and swats at him from where she’s curled herself into his armpit with his arm around her.”

  • The love and joy is still in the air because they both laugh at Caleb’s joke and are not laughing at each other.
  • Swat: The author uses the word “swat” because it’s an action verb that represents playfulness and teasing each love couple does to one another for affection.
  • Curled: This word is used to show how comfortable Brannan is with Caleb and how she can curl into his armpit with his arm around her.
  • Armpit: The author used the word “armpit” even though some people might find it disgusting to hear but does it really matter when you love someone and that’s what the author tried to show the audience, the compassionate love they had for each other.

6. “At the front door, we all beam at each other in the warm way people do when they’re separating after a nice meal.”

  • Why the front door, some people open the garage door to leave and others go through the side door.
  • Beam: The author uses the word “beam” as sense of fear but he rephrased it and said in a warm way because usually beam means to look at someone with long glance and have fear develop inside the person you stare at.
  • Separating: This word is a harsh word to use because it means to separate from someone and never see them again in which has done.
  • It is confirmed that the author went to Caleb’s house for a nice meal, observed his surroundings and left with a warm beam looking at them.

7. “Caleb is in such a good mood that Brannan asks if he’s up for putting Katie to bed so she can go lie down.”

  • Good Mood: The author uses this word to describe how Caleb is feeling at the time concerning he has PTSD which means at times he has break downs and starts screaming where he always feels he is in danger.
  • Ask: It is hard for Brannan to ask Caleb for anything because he is not right in the state of mind and doesn’t want him to feel stressed out about anything.
  • Lie Down: The author uses this word “lie down” instead of sleep because the author knows that it won’t be long till Caleb starts screaming which means she can only “lie down” for a few minutes while sleeping means to doze off for more than an hour.
  • Seems like the audience can estimate how old Katie is and that she needs someone to tuck her in at night.

8. “Not two days after that, he tells her he’s leaving her. “I’m going to get it over with and do it so you don’t have to,” he says,”

  • Not: The word “not” is used to say that is hasn’t been long till something has happened.
  • After a long time of being married, Caleb is leaving his wife because of the pain she goes through to be with him.
  • Get it over with: This phrase is used to mean that the person wants to be done with any deed and not regret anything.
  • The author explains that Caleb was strongly using “you” towards Brannan and not the audience.
  • Caleb ended the relationship because he knew that Brannan would not end it, even though Caleb felt horrible he did not want Brannan to suffer anymore.
  • We can tell that Caleb is getting better because he can make more decisions on his own with out being too mad about it.

9. when he weighs the pain of being alone versus the pain of being a burden.”

  • Weighs: The author expresses this word as the weight he mentally and physically carries.
  • His weight consists of being alone and the heavy load some he must carry all due because of his PTSD.

Summaries-theintern

1. Behavior of Social Systems

It seems counterintuitive that humans have trouble understanding themselves and how complex they are. Humans keep making the same mistake and repeating history, we can fix almost anything that has to deal with technology or any other materialistic item. However, we can not find the answer to fix our ourselves and the errors we commit. For example with technology we have a test run and see if there are any defects. Once we figure out the errors we fix the tweaks and make the same mistake again and have the technology working properly. However, with ourselves there is no test run to see what the outcome is. Even if there is a test run, we get influenced by the wrong people at times which has always a different outcome on the situation.

There are many different situations that go against the social systems which sums up how humans are uncontrollable and unpredictable. Comparing to technology or computer models they are predictable and able to control if something gets out of control. While technology is programmed by humans they come out doing the jobs they are intended for; but, for humans they try to think ahead to see of what kind of outcome could happen but their mental models are never accurate like technology where it can always be accurate just like a calculator.

2.  How the mind works

It seems counterintuitive that we try to seek for help always because we think something is wrong with us. When we do seek for help its looked upon as silliness or absurd. Phycologists have figured out ten different studies how our minds work. Some of these ten studies are hallucinations, choice blindness, brainstorming, fantasies, and the placebo effect.

There are many studies but do phycologists really know the answer to them, for some it might be true but for the other studies I believe they are wrong. Let’s start off with the hallucinations which were said are common and are considered as a mental illness, my thoughts about this subject is absurd hallucinations can happen to anyone, there is no mental illness to it. People believe what they are told, like if you take this pill you’ll feel better which in some cases might be true but that is why there is the placebo effect. There are many studies around placebos and how there are always two groups of people, one group gets the actual pill while the others get a fake pill that doesn’t do anything to your body. People’s minds are so powerful that they think that the pill is working because the doctor supposedly gave them a pill that will help them but in reality its the placebo.

Phycologists explain how fantasies reduce motivation which I find that to be false. Getting a taste of the future through fantasies help people visualize how hard they must work towards that fantasy to come true. There are many other studies that Phycologists observe and study but what if they post these articles to influence the minds of those who think they are fine but have to second guess themselves because of some article that became popular and stating some results that are similar to those who see themselves as healthy. The mind works in many different, weird but powerful ways.

3. Corruption in Figure Skating Judging

It seems counterintuitive that figure skating is considered fixed. It says that the the judges were from five other countries and they all picked Russian couple. Economist Eric Zitzewitz of Dartmouth University covers most of the story of how the judges allegedly ranked a Russian figure-skating pair in the 2002 Olympics. Though my opinion is what are the jobs of the judges; I say their jobs are to pick the best couple. This drama happens all the time just because their favorite couple didn’t win they start trying to look for an excuse why the team that won should have lost.

Zitzewitz looked in detail at all the judges from different years and said that he found out that all judges have cheated in the past not just that, every judge whose ethnicity was the same as the competitors they’d score them higher. Now what I am saying is why do people notice this one incident as a big deal if in the past it might’ve also happened and no one really made it stand out. Even if the incident did happen I bet if anyone had the chance to be a judge they would commit the same mistake of cheating.

Stone Money – theintern

Listening to the Stone Money story in class, I said to myself, my professor sounded silly for telling us a story about an Island called the Yap Island. He said on the Yap island the payment or the object that held each persons’ wealth was through many big limestones. I wondered how in the world is a huge stone used as payment. As I kept on hearing what my professor said I was beginning to think this class is gonna be strange however I looked at the assignments he assigned and began to read article The Island of Stone Money I was surprised about what he said was true. I never thought this sort of trade or payment would have ever existed. Even though the stone could not be moved and would have to stay in one spot for all eternity it was still used to pay people and when the stone was not yours anymore it would still remain where it was placed. Which I found was pretty weird. Now I wonder how the limestone and the electronic bank balance are both considered money but people do not see it that way because these payments are in both different eras which has advanced because of technology and has evolved around money.

I opened up the story The Island of Stone Money by Milton Friedman an article explaining how stone money became to be and how physically impossible it must have been to move all those stones from 400 miles away with a raft. In Friedman’s article he explains how impossible it is to moved stones from one small island to another. Especially for the people living on the island to move those big rocks without any advanced technology. Other than the transportation, Friedman explains that the stones were the first form of payment on the island, he also tells us that the German government bought the Caroline Islands from Spain. However they wanted to improve the roads because the island was run down but they realized that the natives saw money as stones. So the Germans told the people that they were taking the stones by marking an X with paint and that they could have it back if they would be their workers. The people agreed and worked until it was finished, in return the Germans rubbed off the paint and gave it back to the natives. My thoughts of reading the German’s experience was funny because stones are stones not money. However if you think about money, before money was credit/debit cards or paper slips they were stones. During the decades and centuries the appearance of currency has changed and keeps changing. We use to use cows and land as payments. It is odd to think of how different our “money” was back then but we will probably say that when the future is upon us too.

Reading the last two articles about the stones and currencies I had an understanding of what was used as a replacement. It is very odd but it worked the system was working and people had money and were able to make compromises. I began to read How Fake Money Saved Brazil the next article about the Brazil real. It said that in the 1950’s Brazil was in a deep economic crisis and inflation moving up higher than eighty percent. For example if the price of a pair of sunglasses were ten bucks this month, the next month it would double and keep doubling every month until the sixth month it would be worth around three hundred dollars. Brazil’s presidents were no help to the economy they just made matters worse. Their plan was to freeze the prices so that it would not be so expensive for customers to get their items. Though, it did not work, the store owners were not willing to sell their merchandise at a low cost because that meant they were losing so they hid everything until the prices were to unfreeze and go up again. Luckily four graduates figured out a way to bring the economy out of inflation. The four friends came up with the idea of making a virtual currency that would be called Unit of real value (URV) this would let people know that this new “fake” currency was dependable and safe to use. (Chana Joffe-Walt, 2010) The new currency helped inflation drop and everything was now affordable. After six months the inflation that was around eighty percent dropped to being even and equaling to a dollar. Once the economy was running smoothly Brazil made the real the official currency. Reading about the reals made me feel concerned about all the lies that there is “real money”.

Money in my opinion is considered as a substitute for trade of some goods and I have always questioned myself about money and what do we have it? Why can’t anything just be free? Before the system was even available everything was free until what I believe is that people started wanting some reward for the hard work they did. From that point the trade and some sort of payment was created. I understand that if everything were to be free, people would stop working because after a long day they would want some sort of payment. In today’s world people work to get paid. From payment many creations are made for example, money made the world turn to a more advanced technology era where we have touch screen cell phones, high speed computers, machines to determine if you have a certain disease and specialized fields like doctors. Now if you think about money, sure it is real and money is somewhat fake but it’s a lie that moved the world forward, it made it a goal for all students who are willing to go to college and be a profession to study because one day they will make loads of money to have fun with and at the same time keep the world moving in a better direction.
