For my research essay I originally was going to talk about the legalization of weed and is it bad for you? But i have such decided to change it after bad reviews and comments on the topic so now I will be examining the illegal use of gun violence and how it should be stricter laws on how to get and purchase guns! My argument will go into detail of how gun violence in the United States is getting worse and their should be more laws restricting people getting firearms.

1. The Benefits of Reducing Gun Violence: Evidence from Contingent-Valuation Survey Data

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1023/A:1011144500928

Essential Content of the Article:  surveys on whether or not people are really into reducing the use of gun violence by paying to have it lowered.

What it Proves- This article proves that many assaults come from the use of gun violence and if the individuals who agree with reducing gun violence pay to do so then it can be lowered.

2.Illegal Firearms: Access and Use By Arrestees

https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles/163496.pdf

The Essential Content of the Article- The article discusses the people stated how it is easy for them to obtain illegal firearms by many of ways. They conducted studies due to the incarcerated population due to injuries and death population.

What it Proves- This article proves that studies took place for people incarcerated or previously incarcerated on how easy it it or was to get a firearm in their possession.  Next the study and availability and theories of how firearms are obtained.

3. Gun violence prevention

https://search.proquest.com/docview/1805442464?pq-origsite=gscholar

The Essential Content of the Article- this article discusses of gun laws and the laws implemented in the United States. Also discussed   they stated that here is an emerging consensus that certain gun laws reduce gun violence, particularly those requiring all gun buyers to first pass background checks, and those barring domestic abusers from possessing guns.

What it Proves- that many more people who receive guns or try to get guns need more medical attention as far as their background goes.

4. Implementing a Public Health Approach to Gun Violence Prevention: The Importance of Physician Engagement

http://annals.org/aim/article/1569946

The Essential Content Of The Article -He referenced survey findings indicating that most physicians viewed gun violence as a public health problem and that they supported a more active role for the profession in preventing it.  Fear has also shaped the gun policy debate. Whether to muster support for “stand your ground” laws or rally in opposition to proposals that would track gun purchases to aid law enforcement investigations, fear is an element of how we talk about guns.

What it Proves- This article proves there are many laws representing guns and many people support it . Also the study of people viewing to look into getting guns need to be evaluated to see if they are mentally competent.

5. Rates of intimate partner violence in the United States.

http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/ajph.88.11.1702

The Essential Content Of The Article- surveys conducted on inmate violence due to the range of gun violence on female to male ratio of violence interactions.

What it Proves- Study the issue and level of violence of inmates that are incarcerated. The ratio from women to men are estimated from partner violence.

6.ProCon.org. “Gun Control ProCon.org.” ProCon.org. 5 Oct. 2017, 6:21 p.m., gun-control.procon.org/

Essential Context Of The Article -America has the highest total for guns per people. Next  our gun control comes from our historical background as guns stemmed from the wars were involved in.Proponents of more gun control laws state that the Second Amendment was intended for militias; that gun violence would be reduced; that gun restrictions have always existed

What It Proves-Stating that guns laws need to be more complex and just.  Simply to me the background checks aren’t enough and more needs to be done so everyone can feel safe.

7.Metzl, Jonathan. Mental Illness, Mass Shootings, and the Politics of American Firearms. 9 Aug. 2014, http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.2105/AJPH.2014.302242

Essential Context Of The Article-After all the mass shootings the United States have faced the main assumption that pops up in everyone’s head is mental illness causes gun violence.

What It Proves-discussing how mental illness can cause people to attract towards gun violence to harm others.

8.Kates, Don B.; Mauser, Gary. “Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide – A Review of International and Some Domestic Evidence,” Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy vol. 30, no. 2 (Spring 2007): p. 649-694.

Essential Context Of The Article-The more guns there are the more deaths we will result from. The fewer guns we have then the least deaths that we will have.

What It Proves-If we eliminate the use of guns ,and only have them in the possession of staff and faculty that jobs revolve around them then the world could and would be a safer environment for others to live in.

9.Politifact, and Barack Obama President. “Obama: Violent Felons Can Buy Guns Online without Background Checks.” @Politifact, 5 Jan. 2016, www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/jan/05/barack-obama/obama-violent-felons-can-buy-guns-online-without-b/.

Essential Context Of The Article-under our current system dangerous people have it easy as to accessing fire arms. With loopholes and easy access we have to do better at administering fire arms and just ban them all together! Also gun providers have been doing things under different rules with no background checks available online.

What It Proves-More background checks need to be given out ,also the quality of the checks need to be adequate and efficient enough for people not to be able to slip through the system.

10.“Bulk Gun Purchases.” Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, 15 Oct. 2017, lawcenter.giffords.org/gun-laws/policy-areas/crime-guns/bulk-gun-purchases/.

Essential Context Of The Article-Should it be legal for people to be able to have multiple firearms ? Should there be a limit? Limiting the use of guns in bulk will reduce gun violence

What It Proves-Stating that it should be a law restricting people on getting guns in bulk  which reduce the levels of gun trafficking which then converts to people illegally performing and using them.

Visual Rewrite- NewEditionLover

0:01- The first visual rhetoric simply starts off by a man in bed. Next he’s in bed with his eyes closed so it gives me an impression that he’s sleeping.

0:02- He appears to be up but simultaneously try’s to play sleep and wants to suddenly dash out of the home while everyone is sleeping. From the looks of the video the kid in this visual rhetoric appears to look like an young adult I would probably say that he is white or Italian or something of that nature. You can tell that he’s full layered and that can be fully weird for viewer’s because you usually don’t sleep in your bed with outside clothing items on.

-0:03 – By the end of the 3rd second, it’s really obvious that the lights are all wrong for sleeping. The light across the pillow is much brighter than most people would choose for bedtime. We don’t know what that means yet, but as viewers we do wonder what might be going on. Bright light from somewhere below his feet is casting deep shadows on his face from the blanket. Even his eyebrows are casting shadows onto his forehead. So strong light in the room might make it hard for anyone to fall asleep. Again. Perhaps he’s faking sleep. But, if so, he’s not a good liar. Turning off the lights would have been more convincing. One more thing. He doesn’t look like an actor. He looks like a kid from school who might be an amateur, not a made-up professional. We’re not sure what that means, but we do notice it.

0:04- He immediately jumps out of bed maybe he was having a terrible dream that it caused him to be scared.  Could he possibly have spilled something ? Or maybe he as others once waking up hes just utterly confused.. Also as he just woke up he might be a christian and the first thing some do is wake up and read the bible for thinking God for another day.Or maybe he was drinking about water that made him have to pee while he was asleep. Or the guy in the video may be in school and his alarm goes off which is supposed to wake him up.

0:05 – Hes leaning over his bed as if hes looking for something possibly his cell phone

0:06-  He immediately grabs his cell phone ! He may have something planned or maybe hes late for school!

0:07- He receives a text saying “where are you?” he might have a meeting set up ? or his friends might be worried that hes late for school and they have something planned in class like an assignment or big test or quiz .

0:08 -0:09 – He responds saying “i’m on my way ”  which implies to me whoever hes texting is pretty concerned with the well-being of him. With a look of almost being worried as if hes seen a ghost.

0:10- He abruptly gets up in a sort of rush and panic !

0:11-0:12- He heads into the kitchen in a kind of fast paste motion as if hes in some sort of trouble

0:13- On this second It looks to me as his mother calls him back in the house while hes reaching for the door. Maybe the mother instinct kicked in as she watched her son walk out the door as it looks late outside.

0:14 Next his mom must of asked him where he was going at this time of the night which it appears to be very dark, maybe telling her son that she cooked dinner and made him a plate which might be in the microwave by now.

0:15- She has a look in her eyes that she doesn’t want her son going out because of how late it is.

0:16-18- He then gets out the house after he rushes his mom that he has somewhere important to be.

0:19- He immediately jumps in the car and slams the door

0:20-0:22- Hes in his car driving which appears to be on a long dark road, He seems as though hes impatient and focused on the road.

0:23- He suddenly takes his eyes off the road checking his cell phone in quickness and agony. Maybe the same person who texted him when he was awakened in sleep wants to know again where hes at?

0:24- As he appeared to look down at his phone he suddenly looks back up to the road maybe he swerved in the other lane and their is a car approaching in the same direction as him. Or maybe an animal such as a deer jumps out in the middle of the road and almost hits his car.

0:25-0:26- He puts his arm up as he abruptly swerves on the other side of the road as a car is approaching him , hes scared and panicking and maybe thinking of life or death situations because of his texting and driving actions.

0:27-0:29- With both hands on the wheel hes trying to stay calm and focused on keeping the car leveled and to make sure he doesn’t crash into anything. His level of trying to gain control of the car again plays a huge part considering its his fault why hes in the predicament hes in now.

0:30- He gets control of the wheel and comes back to his senses. His eyes are as if he has seen a ghost receiving a text saying “dude hurry up”. A bright light appears as if it can be another cars high-beams or as if its a slight vision telling him what to do.

Stone Money Rewrite–NewEditionLover

Money Is Powerful

P1. Does having money make you a better person socially or economically? As I listened to the story of the “Stone Money Of Yap ” from the planet money team I learned many new concepts in which I thought were very interesting. I spent a long time thinking where money goes and how people in the United States go about using it. How does money just disappear without anybody knowing where it went? I view money as a concept of life and without it you basically cant survive. Without money you cant do the things you want and live life without any worries. But in the end is money always there? Do we just work just to have the idea or thought of having money?

P2. If my mom goes to work just to pay bills and pays online she technically didn’t pay them the money from her pockets but from her debit or credit card. Now this has me thinking am I just another worthless person just thinking that money is gonna cause me happiness in the long run? Its kind of a scary thought but its something to think about.

P3. I’ve learned through the broadcast that dollar bills represent the idea of money and money is never currency as you get paid. They say this because most of the money simply doesn’t exist and money is technically created out of nothing. That idea had me confused because how doesn’t money exist? Without money no ones daily routine would ever be the same again. Money comes and goes but it is a very beautiful sight to have when the money hits your account after tremendous amounts of working. When you make a purchase its basically like your signing your rights over and that’s it. Having money to me means that I can be happy and flourish with life.

P4. Money does exist and it shows how much status and “stain” you have in your town or city. What does money mean to you? Money gives me a feeling that I’ve never felt before!

P5. In the article “The Island Of Stone Money” by Milton Friedman taught me a little more about wealth and supremacy. How can you and your family be known but not have anything to show for it? Is the idea of wealth a good thing generally speaking you basically have nothing but you just a known figure. To me money is very real. The bible claims that money is the route to all evil? But without money I wouldn’t have everything that I’ve ever wanted! Money has gotten me a car, food , shelter and all my worlds greatest necessities. To me money makes you who you are without the money your nobody and your just another broke person, with money you can have all the nice things in the world and have all the power in your hand . You can clearly look at someone and tell whether or not they have money.

P6. The source i gathered by Christopher S Penn article “The fictional nature of money” he describes life’s most precious values stating “without it , you don’t eat, you don’t have a place to live, no clothes to wear, unless it doesn’t involve money. Penn also stated  Money can be a tremendous amplifier of personal power. ” meaning you can basically break the rules and do what you want just because you have money.

“to help you find your way, find the information you need, and find a way not only to cope with life after combat…but to survive and thrive!”

-We can assume that Brannan is kind of nervous

-Also that life after serving is something that requires work and time

-people can assist you on the journey of regrouping

“Things were a little…off,”

-Can probably say things and life changed

-maybe a different outlook on-life being away

“What choice do I have?”

  • Brannan had no choice and is very aggressive
  • wants to help people in need
  • wants to educate and inform others on the condition

Purposeful Summaries -New Edition Lover

  1. “Anne Frank Novelist ” It seems counter-intuitive , where everyone knows the story of Anne Frank from Amsterdam where she impressively wrote direct accounts in her personal diary which gave us a insight on her young life as the holocaust ended the life of her and many other Jews. The maturity and growth Anne showed in the diary showed how mature sh was at such a young age going through the worst time of her life. The legacy of Anne Frank will continue to live on and her story will always be told.
  2.   “Men Defining Rape : A History” It seems counter-intuitive that men are defining what rape is. Rape has been written in many different way and forms since the begging of times, which rape to me is the assault on rape or even men where you force them to have sexual intercourse. Its also counter intuitive that January of 2012 is when the FBI updated its definition of forcible rape ,which one cant consent or have no physical capacity due to drugs, alcohol or age.
  3. “Do Tom Shoes Really Help People?” It seems -counter intuitive but could be true that Toms may not help people. Founded in 2006 which goes with the line “buy one give one” which donates to all kids around the world in need. But which also may seem counter intuitive is that a piece by Sarika Bansal which she went and met one of their partners from Ethopia where they give shoes to those who already have shoes which is not the idea of it at all. The idea that Toms are not really helping people but in reality competing for sales prices. Toms are very limited from their website and the message they are achieving is not clear due to global issues around the world.
