Visual Rhetoric- Doublea

Example 4:

00-04

We pan to a shot of this guy named “Todd”. We see him eating something and he looks very delightful. It is the morning and he is off to work dressed in his work attire. It is very odd to see a person so happy in the morning because most people are very tired and grouchy.

Todd is smiling and finishes eating and washes his dish that he was using to eat off of. We then pan to a girl most likely his wife. She is smiling because she knows she has a wonderful husband that does his dishes.

05-09

Now we see an image of Todd outside walking to his car. Like I said he is probably on his way to work because he is dressed nicely. In the background we see an old Asian man struggling with his sprinkler system. Knowing that the Asian man is struggling it seems like the nice guy Todd is he will help him with his sprinkler.

Todd proceeds to go over and help the old man as we now pan to a new frame of Todd watering the tall bushes. We are beginning to see a pattern that Todd is a very nice and helpful man.

10-13

We flash to a coffee pot and it looks like a work building. A hand reaches for the pot and it is no one other than Todd. It seems as if he has made coffee for everyone in the break room.

It flashes out to an office scene where there is two coworkers at a table conversing. They both have coffee mugs so none other than Todd has made them coffee. Todd walks over and pours the coffee into one of his coworkers mugs while the other seems to be raving about the coffee.

14-15

The commercial cuts to a super market scene most likely this is Todd after work. The super market seems to be very crowded and there is a heckler behind Todd in line. The heckler is old-looking and seems to be impatient. Todd proceeds to let the man behind him in line in front of him. The old man is very thankful.

16-19

Now we pan to what seems to be Todd’s car. Someone reaches for a cell phone and then Todd appears looking at the cell phone smiling. It fades to Todd’s car pulling up at the light and shows another car next to his.

20-23

Now the camera changes to the face of the man in the car next to Todd’s. The man is smiling at first but once Todd pulls up and he sees that he is on his cell phone he automatically turns to a smug disappointed face. Now we go to Todd’s face as he notices that expression of the other man. In able to feel less awkward Todd looks to the other side.

24-31

Now that Todd is looking the other way the camera pans to the older black lady sitting at what seems to be a bench or a bus stop. She has the same smile that the other guy had and then when she notices Todd on his phone her face begins to show an angry expression. Todd now feels very embarrassed and a little shameful as he feels regret for pulling out his cell phone. The camera switches back to the old lady’s face again and she is still angry. Todd puts his phone down and gives her a head nod meaning he is sorry. He has a very sad look on his face. While all of the stare-down is happening words appear at the bottom of the screen saying “Ad council Stop texting and driving”. The commercial ends.

Definition Argument – DoubleA

Artificial Turf and the Affect it has on the NFL

One of the leading questions critics and players of the NFL have is what to do about the significant amount of knee injuries endured during an NFL season, and the correlation the playing fields have on these knee injuries. With multiple knee injuries occurring to big name players every season the NFL has a problem on their hands.

Due to the increasing number of concussions players were suffering over the past couple decades the NFL has tried to make the game safer. With new safety rules the NFL has managed to decrease the amount of head to head contact during games, but by doing this has raised the amount of low tackles which causes low blow tackles to the players knees.

Paired with concussions knee injuries are one of the biggest problems the NFL officials face now a days. Every season some team is affected by injuries along the way, but knee injuries are the biggest blow because they can take anywhere from 6-12 months to heal with rehab. This past season big names like Deshaun Watson, Carson Wentz, JJ Watt, Jason Peters, Joe Thomas all had big knee injuries that affected their team tremendously.

Stone Money – Doublea

When I first heard about the stone money on the island of Yap I thought it was insane. Then I realized it was pretty fascinating that they could trust each other like that. Then the thought came to my head, what really is currency? It is literally just a piece of cloth/paper that has a number on it. In the world we all have a price on everything but what constitutes the world even having currency. Everything could essentially be free and it could be a first come first serve basis.

Obviously, that couldn’t work but wouldn’t it be pretty interesting? The Federal Reserve just puts out a certain amount of money and they can just say how much a dollar is worth. But what really is the amount of money with inflation and all the other factors. We don’t even know anymore. Think about a bank and how they give loans how does that money even exist it goes from computer system to computer system and it just has a numerical value on a screen.

When I read Friedman’s essay it amazed me how people could just use a stone as a way of currency and they don’t even move it. They literally just pass ownership on and on through the memory of others but everyone on the island knows whose stone is whos. In his article Friedman talked about how the Germans “seized” their stones from them until they made roads. Automatically, even though it is a mediocre thought it made me think of the fact that your parents will take things away from you until they are done. It seems dumb to put it into that perspective but think about how a parent will take away your phone for not doing your homework. The phone is the currency everyone has a phone but when you take away the phone the person instantly does their work to get it back. ONce you get all the work done that you were supposed to and get your grade up you will get your phone back.

nother thing that caught me off guard was that even the people of Yap didn’t have the stone present they still counted it as a form of currency. The article went on to tell a story about how a limestone was brought back from a nearby island. The limestone was the biggest and the prettiest they have recovered. Unfortunately, a storm hit and they lost the limestone in the Pacific Ocean. Now the crazy part is that the people of Yap still considered that stone tradeable. Even though it was at the bottom of the ocean they considered it for trade. It reminds me giving someone something for a check. You have the money but you don’t have it on you at the moment. It’s almost like you’re trusting the person to have the money in their bank account and hope that their check doesn’t bounce. They have to trust that their money is in their account and that they will get the money someway somehow.

The NPR broadcast also caught me off guard too when they mentioned the online banking. They mentioned the fact that the money is just out there online but is it really there. It makes me think about the fact that you request for a parent plus loan for your kid to get a loan for college. The bank gives you the loan by transferring money into your checking account which then you can transfer that online money into the bank account of the University your kid is attending. Now really is there really a physical money present? No, there is not. You literally transferred an online amount of money from the bank to the Univeristy and you have to trust the bank to pay the Univeristy. Banks essentially themselves don’t even have real money. Yes they have money on hand but if you went and tried to withdrawal all 10,000 dollars out of your bank account they most likely wouldn’t front you all that money right away because then what if all they have figuratively in their safe is 10,000 dollars they wouldn’t have anymore money to give out for withdrawals. Banks rely on the constant flow of money from hand to hand in order to get their money to give out. Banks make all of their money from interest on the loans they give out and imagine if they didn’t approve some people’s loans they would have no money to give out because it is all accounted for and they would not make any profit.

After reading and listening to all of this it made me think of an article I read earlier this semester on Bitcoin. Bitcoin is essentially a cryptocurrency. It has a face value and can be bought but it has little to no value in the real world. You can buy stocks but they are essentially worth nothing because it is fake online money. Bitcoin is basically a currency for the black market to trade around. Bitcoin was brought here to become a new currency maybe for the US and the price of one Bitcoin rose tremendously very fast. Now that people know and figured out what it is and that it has no value people are selling their shares for very cheap and getting rid of their Bitcoins . It is basically an illegal form of currency because it is traded on the black market which we all know is illegal.

After reading all of these articles it really has opened my mind on this whole currency thing. What exactly is the currency we use? Yes it is dollars but do these dollars even have a worth? We all know they do to us but we honestly could live our lives with stones and just trade stones like the people of Yap. I will never know what money is now after reading these articles. As a finance major my eyes were opened widely to the fact that people could trade stones and not even care that much about ownership. It must be the most peaceful island in the world and I would like to research the role of currency even more now that I have the knowledge of the people of Yap.

PTSD Claims- Doublea

15

Categorical- “.. or that it can it can exacerbate its symptoms of exhaustion, agitation, confusion, headaches.”

  • It is a categorical claim because it lists the symptoms of having TBI. TBI is a traumatic brain injury.

Casual- “Researchers posit that TBI can make the brain more vulnerable to PTSD…”

  • This is a casual claim because it lists a certain circumstance, they’re saying since the patient has a TBI they are more susceptible to having PTSD.

Casual- “James Peterson’s post-injection chill-out wore off after a month, faster than it does for other patients—maybe because of his TBI.”

  • This is a casual claim because they cannot prove that James Peterson’s PTSD was a factor in his recovery, but it shows a cause and effect that maybe because of his PTSD his recovery was so much quicker than others.

Factual-  ‘Maybe not. Either way, as for TBI, well, “there is no cure,” says David Hovda, director of UCLA’s Brain Injury Research Center and an adviser to the Department of Defense.’

  • Even though it is just one doctor saying “there is no cure” it is still a factual claim because it is a factual statement that there is indeed no cure to TBI.

Factual- “In one small study, trauma victims given beta-blockers within six hours of the incident had a 40 percent less likelihood of developing PTSD.”

  • In regards to this small study, this is a factual statement because they analyzed the data of the experiment. In analyzing the data of the experiment they were able to calculate the fact that 40 percent of the study within six hours of the incident had a less likelihood of developing PTSD.

Evaluative/Casual- “Treatment offered vets might be less effective than what’s offered to civilians with trauma. With veterans, there are important concomitant issues.”

  • In evaluating vets this is an evaluative claim because doing these studies they encountered that veterans have a harder time with PTSD because of the experiences and issues they faced in war.
  • This is also a casual claim because although they have evaluated the veterans and although the claim does seem reasonable it is not a proven factual claim yet.

White Paper 3rd Draft- Doublea

Hypothesis

Eliminating artificial turf fields with real grass fields would decrease the total amount of knee injuries in an NFL season

This article talks about the increase specifically in ACL injuries on Fieldturf surfaces. The article started off by saying that in an annual study conducted by the NFL that knee injuries on Fieldturf surfaces increased the rate of knee injuries by 88 percent. The study was conducted in the 2003-2008 seasons. The article states that there was only 9 stadiums that have the Fielfturf surfaces. With that being said I could use the research of this article to describe the effect that the Fieldturf playing surface has on knee injuries. With just 9 stadiums sporting the Fieldturf it is a mind boggling stat that the result of knee injuries is increased by 88 percent. Imagine if every field sported the Fieldturf surfaces. The chances of a major knee injury every game would be very high.

Source 2: Turf Battle in the NFL: Natural vs. Artificial. (2017, March 11). Retrieved from https://www.lawnstarter.com/blog/lawn-care-2/turf-at-nfl-stadiums/

The article starts off by talking about the struggle of running a fantasy team with all the injuries that occur now a days on turf fields. It starts off by naming five key players that got hurt in the preseason due to turf fields. I can relate this to my own paper because I too play fantasy football and can relate to the injury struggle due to turf fields. Tons of people every year witness the amount of injuries players encounter playing the dangerous game. The article brings up that there is now 17 stadiums equipped with artificial turf now. Now this number is different than the number of the first article and that is because this is a more recent article but this can go to show that more teams are moving indoors so they have to have turf. With the increase in turf fields in the league I should show the increase in injuries on these fields in my essay.

Source 3: Todd Neale Todd Neale. (2010, March 15). AAOS: Artificial Turf Injuries Still More Likely in NFL. Retrieved from https://www.medpagetoday.com/meetingcoverage/aaos/19020

The article once again brings up the number that the articles brought up. I can continue to use the number of 88% more likely to get a knee injury on turf fields a lot. The stat is mind boggling and seriously should be looked at by NFL officials. The number of lower leg injuries in the seasons on fieldturf fields was 1.79:1.4 per team game. These turf fields were introduced in 2000 so I could try and find a graph of injuries resulting in every year and find a correlation with knee injuries and turf fields.

This article describes the moments in a game between the Eagles and the Colts where 3 separate season ending knee injuries occurred all on turf. The article quotes this trainer Otho Davis, a physical trainer for the Philadelphia Eagles. It quotes him saying that he normally does not take sides between turf and grass fields but this season has been something else to him. Also quotes the Colts trainer saying that players want to cut on a dime but their bodies cannot handle the force of the cuts on the turf.

This article talks about the grass turf on Reliant Field home of the Houston Texans. The article talks about the square panels that the field uses for play. These panels are set up and when you get a cleat stuck in the side of a panel it can bend your knee the wrong way. This is what happened in Jadeveon Clowney’s first game where he planted in one of the seams and bent his knee the wrong way. According to his teammate Swearinger he also believes this is a problem because there has been a big injury bug around the Texans and knee injuries for years. I can use this to show that this could be the case for other fields as well and this is not safe to play on.

This article brings to light the question asked by a blog member on a doctors blog site. Dr. David Geieir was brought a question because a kid had 3 injuries on his football team all on turf fields away games. Their home field was grass and all three injuries occurred on turf at away games. When answering the question Dr. said that the best results were from this study made from NFL teams from 2000-2009 where the results showed that there was not an increase in MCL injuries on turf but there was a 22% increase in knee sprains altogether and a 67% higher chance of getting an ACL sprain on turf than grass.

The American Journal of Sports Medicine, 40(10), 2200-2205. doi:10.1177/0363546512458888

This article is actually the results that Dr. G used in his answer to his blogger. The results are the same as stated above but it tells us what stats they used to find this data. The article says that they literally used every game from 2000-2009 seasons and made a graph and analysed the data to find the results. The results were from 2680 games which is 5360 team games played so it is without a doubt a lot of data.

This article talked about a 130 game span where they analyzed the lower extremity injuries. In this time the data was found that there was an increase in lower extremity injuries on turf but not during practice. If this is the case just practice on turf and play on grass or just take you chances and practice on grass and play on grass. I would use this in my arguments by saying and proving that in in game play there is an increase in lower extremity injuries.

This article states how there is indeed an increase in the number of lower extremity injuries on the football field due to the playing surface. The article states a lot of causes though like surface hardness, rotational stiffness, and release torque. These physical characteristics may interact with other environmental factors such as cleat design, surface moisture levels, and ambient temperature. Altogether, these causes are what causes these  player to twist/turn their knees on the turf. It describes how the strongest evidence in field turf play injuries comes from football because of the size of players and level of play. This article is from 2018 so I plan on using this article to bring up the argument in my rebuttal argument that people may have problems with the fact that my evidence is from 2009.

Source 10:

This article talks about how the versatility and durability of artificial playing fields but, are they really that safe. It states that research over time has shown an increase in injury on artificial playing surfaces and that biomechanical data suggests that both the torque and strain experienced by lower extremity joints generated by artificial surfaces may be more than those generated by natural grass fields. With that being said this article is more of a recent article too and I could also use this against the arguments people will have arisen in my rebuttal argument.

My Hypothesis—DoubleA

  1. Knee injuries in football
  2. Knee injuries and artificial turf
  3. the effect that artificial turf has on knee injuries in the NFL
  4. Playing on grass instead of artificial turf fields will reduce the amount of knee injuries in the NFL
  5. Eliminating turf fields would reduce the amount of knee injuries suffered by NFL players in an NFL game
  6. Eliminating artificial turf fields with real grass fields would decrease the total amount of knee injuries in an NFL season

Summaries- Doublea413

It seems counterintuitive that people are still investing in Bitcoin even though it’s essentially fake currency. A little over a year ago tons of people invested in a cryptocurrency called Bitcoin. It is a currency online that has little to no value, but somehow soared in sales a year ago. However, people are now catching on to the creators Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. They say they are backed up by big names like the New York Stock exchange, but even that hasn’t helped the company to raise their prices.

At one point the bitcoin universe was worth about 3.5 billion, but since the price of shares has decreased. People are catching onto the fake currency and realizing that the money they are investing is just going to waste. Essentially, a Bitcoin is worth nothing and there is no point in investing in a fake currency.

There are so many downsides to investing in Bitcoin. People will invest and come out with nothing. People will trade Bitcoins for real items or they will essentially purchase illegal items with Bitcoins. It has become a market close to the Dark Web in some fashions and who can trust their money on there. Hackers everyday will take your invested money and you will never see it again. In the end, don’t invest your money in some silly fake start-up company that wont get you any profit just stick to real stocks and invest in the right things.

It seems counterintuitive that they would place a KFC and a Pizza Hut next to Sphinx, but companies try and find the best way to make money. In the video you see a Pizza Hut and a KFC located across from the Sphinx in Egypt. People just like me are definitely wondering why that is? The only logical explanation would be for marketing purposes. Having a big fast food chain located across from one of the greatest wonders of the World is great for business.

It seems messed up and definitely intruding that they would place such stores like that near the Sphinx. You should preserve the land of Egypt and the Sphinx. It just does not seem right of them to put such fast food places near a tourist destination.

As long as it brings in business though, the companies do not care. It almost seems counterintuitive for people to travel to Egypt to see the Sphinx and dine in at a fast food chain where you could get anywhere else. It is 100% a marketing tactic and the owners of the branches must do good business, but once again it just doesn’t seem right for people to eat there while visiting such an amazing location.

It seems counterintuitive that people slip and fall in the shower, but people die from that daily. Youll think to yourself, How dumb really are people? Actually you should get used to the saying though because older aged people die all the time due to slips and falls. I pesonally have helped up multiple older people in this neighborhood next to me on runs through the neighborhood. It happens all the time. Due to weak bones these older people will fall and it occurs the most in showers. You think that you take one shower a day or maybe even more. Bottom line you shower daily. All thopse times in the shower you are bound to fall at some point, because statitically people fall 1/1000m times in showers. All it takes it one stupid fall due to old age and we could lose a life.

My Hypothesis—DoubleA

  1. Global Warming
  2. The recent weather tragedies and climate change
  3. Is global warming really causing these recent tragedies
  4. Due to the fluctuating high and low temperatures and recent natural disasters is global warming the cause
  5. In recent years, is global warming to blame for these worldly natural disasters and the high and low temperatures they bring with it.
