Think Twice

0:01 The advertisement opens with a group of three men in the woods, one is standing still looking up with a perplexed look on his face. The other two are seen walking out from a path carrying some wood presumably to start a fire. As the two men approach their friend they stop close to him, with a proud/accomplished expression on their face they drop the sticks in a pile where some had already been placed. At this point the two seem to be done with their task and look ready to start the fire.

0:02-0:03 The camera angle then changes to beneath the mans shoulders who was staring upwards. The view is of his head and of the multiple branches that are seen swaying in the breeze above.

0:04-0:07 The camera then goes back to the man’s face who was seen staring up. He is looking at his friends and can be seen saying something to them as his head nods in one direction perhaps signaling them to move to a different location. Camera then pans out onto all of them and the two who got the wood seem to have a disgruntled look on their face.

0:08-0:10 The agitated looks of the two men quickly turn to a face of apprehension. Their vision shifts away from their friend to something behind him not seen on camera. Noticing his friends gaze the man turns around slowly and is met by an imposing figure. A huge creature with brown fur is standing within inches of the man.

0:11-0:16 The next shot is of Smokey the bear towering over the man looking down on him. There is a brief pause making the moment even more dramatic. Smokey then closes his eyes and leans in to hug the man who is in complete shock. The camera angles to just the mans face pressed against the bears furry body. His nervous expression then slowly turns into relief as he puts his arms around Smokey.

0:17-0:30 Smokey then turns and slowly walks back into the forrest, with the camera behind the men watching him walk away. It then returns to a full body shot of all of the men. Their body language seems to still be in awe as they are all very still. After a brief moment one man says something short probably to break the silence and put what just happened into perspective. Just as Smokey is seen leaving the view of the camera the one man in the middle awkwardly waves bye.

Stone Money – Prof2020

If someone had asked me several days ago what I thought money was, I would have regurgitated some textbook definition like “money is a form of currency to be exchanged for goods and/or services.” The reality is that most people, including myself, fail to consider the true logic and science behind the concept of currency.

The idea of trading things in exchange for other things has been around since the beginning of time because we’re simply a greedy species. How many times has someone asked you for something and one of your thoughts is “what am I getting out of this?” When America’s economy was first established, it was a small farming economy run by the colonies and over seen by Great Britain. Now, we have the nominally largest economy in the world. Most history books will tell you that our economy was built by hard-working Americans in hope of building a better life. In reality, our economy was built on faith. Banknotes were introduced in 1861 as a way to help finance the civil war. Basically a place holder for things of intrinsic value, they served as an investment in the U.S. Government to help support the war effort. These investments were made in good faith that the banknotes could be exchanged for their worth in something of real tangible value i.e. gold, silver, copper, etc.

Most countries have their own form of monetary system, some more exotic than others. Perhaps one of the most intriguing examples I’ve been introduced to is that of the island of Yap. The Yapese people trade coins of their own design. The coins vary in size, ranging from seven centimeters to nearly four meters in diameter. The larger of the bunch are often too heavy to move so they stay in one place for the long durations of time. Much like our economy, that of the Yapese people is built on faith. Rather than physically hand over their coins in exchange for the things they want, they simply transfer ownership. When a coin is too large to move, it remains stationary but everyone is made aware of who owns that coin. The coin itself has no value. Take the coin from the island of Yap and you’ve simply got a big rock. However, that’s where the faith of the Yapese comes into play. On the island, the great boulders of limestone are considered valuable because they are hard to come by and once cleaned and polished they’re quite beautiful. They hold value because people want them and that’s really all any financial system boils down to.

Modern currency was invented because it is far easier to regulate than just trading goods and services, which usually have immediate benefits but the value varies depending on the people involved. Common currency is also far more universal. If you can only exchange a certain item or service but no one wants it then you’re going to have a very difficult time generating any revenue. However, if the currency you use is more widely accepted you’ll be able to market to a wider audience.

My question is simply who gets to decide what has value and what doesn’t? The inhabitants of Yap found these large chunks of limestone and so admired and wanted after these rare pieces that it became their currency, regardless of what the rock itself can do for anyone. American dollar bills are representative of precious metals and other valuables but why are those the things we consider valuable? What good is a chunk of gold when I’m sick or hungry? It can’t help me unless I exchange it for something else. Now we must ask ourselves, “How different are we from the Yapese from anyone else?” This produces a “which came first” conversation. Do we want money because it’s valuable or is it valuable because we want it?

Frankly, I don’t know enough about how these systems are developed to form a firm opinion on how it’s all carried out. However, I do know I’ll have some new thoughts the next time I swipe my debit card or go fishing for spare dollar bills in the bottom of my bag.

An older style, dark vehicle is driving through a parking lot.

A group of friends are hanging in a dark parking lot surrounding their vehicles.

A man with dark hair and glasses is grabbing a blonde woman’s face as she is looking away from him. The mans eyes appear to be closed as if he is going in for a kiss, But the woman is looking away from him.

The picture pans out and there is another young man with a beer bottle in his hand. In the background, the 2 individuals from the previous scene are kissing.

The man with the beer ducks down and slides into the drivers seat of his car.

Two males are laughing, looking at one another from over the top of the car. They are standing on opposite sides. wearing leather jackets. looks like an older generation.

The driver hands his open beer bottle to the lady in the passenger seat. The people in the back are all drinking while in the car with no seat belt on.

Man in the back seat leans up and grabs the drivers shoulder with a concerned look on his face. Appears to be talking to him.

Man leans back and puts his are around the girl next to him. Appears to be his girlfriend.

The driver missed the ignition hole with the key next to the skinny brown steering wheel.

Driver turns the silver, older looking key.

Flash of light and every individual in the car turns into a skeleton.

A skeleton hand and a human hand are shaking whith the words, “drinking and driving can kill a friendship”.

Keep your EYES on the Road

[0:00] The opening sense is a young boy getting into the driver seat of an older car. The boy is wearing a a dark blue t-shirt and jeans. He is Caucasian and has short dark hair. He looks clean and well kept. When getting into this older car, something similar to an 1989 ford Lincoln, he has his cell phone in his hand it and looks as if he is texting someone. His cell phone looks to be some type of smart phone.

[0:01- 0:03] The boy takes his right hand and reaches across his body for the buckle and buckles himself. This entire time he does not take his eyes off his phone, which is in his left hand.

[0:04-0:05] The boy is now adjusting the rear view mirror with his right hand but never looks up from his phone which continues to be in his left hand to see where he is adjusting the mirror. He moves the mirror about twice.

[0:06-0:07] the boy now takes his right hand and reaches for the keys which are in the ignition and starts the car turning the keys forward. He continues to look only at his phone in his left hand.

[0:08-0:09] The boy reaches up for the shifter which is places behind the steering wheel on the right side. He pulls it down and puts the car into gear. He continues to look at the phone in his left hand the entire time.

[0:10] The boys right hand now transitions onto the top of the steering wheel and he lends back into a comfortable position while still viewing his phone.

[0:11] The still image of the boy in the car in a laid back position with his right hand on the top of the steering wheel and his head slanted downwards towards his phone in his left hand fades slowly to the background. Big red letters that spell the word STOP in all capital letters appear across the screen.

[0:12-0:14] An image of an iguana appears the screen. The iguana’s eyes are moving all around looking in multiple different directions . The words Can you do this? Appear along the bottom of the screen in white.

[0:15-0:16] the camera goes back to the boy in the car but is now zoomed in on the boy’s face. The camera shows from his chest up. The phone is now in his right hand held up higher in front of his face. His left hand is on the steering wheel. He is attempting to move his eyes around the same way the iguana was from the previous screen. The boy has a strange smirk on his face but also expresses a sense of confusion.

[0:17] the screen is the same as the prior one except for the word No? in white appears on the bottom of the screen.

[0:18] The boy now looks completely away from his phone and shrugs his shoulders. The grin is still on his face and the word No? is still on the screen. He also now turns his head to face the camera on the right side of his body.

[0:19] The camera slowly fades out showing the majority of the car and the boy through the passenger side window. The boy takes the phone which is in his right hand and tosses it up and it lands in the passenger seat. He then looks forward as if he is about to drive.

[0:20] the car drives out of the screen from the left to right.

[0:21] the screen now shows a picture of the woods with a short wooden fence along the side of the road appears and the words Then DON’T text and drive. Appear in the front of the screen. The letter are in white and the only letters in capital are DON’T and the T in then.

[0:22] The screen fades to black.

[0:23- 0:26] the words Keep both EYEs on the road. Appear on the black screen. They are in a blueish, greenish colored collage fading from one to the other. The word EYES is in all caps.

[0:27-0:29] the screen now transitions into the same black screen with yellow dash marks going through the bottom of the screen. It makes it look almost like a road. In the middle of the screen “STOPTEXTSSTOPWRECKS.ORG” appears. The letters are all in caps and STOP is in yellow while the rest is in white. On the left side of the dash marks the words project yellow light area with a traffic sign and below that Ad councils symbol appears. On the right side of the dash marks appears NOYS in blue and under that is NHTSA with a symbol along that in the beginning.

Don’t Set Yourself Back

  • (0:00-0:01)-The first shot shows a man doing pushups in a dreary, semi-lit room. His hair is of medium length but looks clean and well groomed. His face is showing some stubble but whether that is done on purpose is unclear. He looks to be somewhere in his twenties but no older than early thirties.
  • (0:02-0:05)-The second shot shows the same man sitting up against a wall in the same room. This reveals he is wearing jeans, a white crewneck t-shirt and dark socks. He seems at ease in a relaxed position, throwing playing cards into an empty coffee can. However, his facial expression shows signs of boredom and frustration like he’s trying to pass the time. Why not leave the room? Or is he not allowed to? My first thought was that he was in a holding cell in a jail or something of a similar situation.
  • (0:05-0:07)-The following shots show the man staring longingly at two photos. The first is a photo of a really nice, shiny, black, old car in a driveway. Is it his? The second photo is of a pretty, dark haired woman with fair skin and a soft smile. She’s only shown from her from the elbows up. What’s the relationship between the man and woman? Were they together at some point? Where is she now?
  • (0:08-0:12)-In next few shots, the man is shown playing a harmonica, stacking matchsticks, and crossing days off an empty calendar with a sharpie. These reinforce the idea of boredom and loneliness.
  • (0:13-0:15)-He is now sitting on the floor up against what looks like a bed and his bouncing something off the wall in front of him. It’s probably a ball of some kind but isn’t made clear. This makes a thumping noise.
  • (0:17-0:20)-It seems the noise has attracted some attention as an older woman, probably in her forties or early fifties, opens the door carrying a laundry basket. She’s dressed in a floral blouse and tan cardigan. Her hair is dark brown and cropped short. Her expression appears frustrated and she sternly tells the man in the room to “knock it off.” He replies “sorry mom.”
  • (0:20-0:22)A wider shot reveals this has all taken place in what looks like a teenage boy’s bedroom. There are posters decorating the walls and several sports trophies are on display throughout the room. It’s implied that this is the man’s room. However, we must ask why it looks as if it’s inhabited by a boy about half his age.
  • (0:22-0:25)The man then picks himself up from the floor and promptly flops onto the small twin bed behind him in defeat.
  • (0:22-0:31)As the ad ends, the words “Buzzed, Busted, Broke” flash across the screen. The purpose of the ad is to appeal to people from a financial viewpoint. Being arrested for driving while even slightly intoxicated can result in high fines and legal fees. It’s implied that the man was arrested for buzzed driving and had to pay the fines and legal fees which made him “broke.” Now he’s now living back at home with his mother.

Donate To Food Banks

0:00- There is a boy, assuming to be about nine or ten years old. This boy has short light brown hair with white skin. He is wearing a light blue shirt and looks like he is walking somewhere on a sidewalk. He is also wearing a grey backpack which can be assumed that he goes to school and is either walking home or to school. The setting looks like a sunny day in the suburbs. There is a street with no cars, though maybe there are vehicles down the street but who knows. The background is unclear because the camera is focused on the back side of this boy’s head. We can see that he is also walking on the right side of the street.

0:01- The camera angle is still focused on the back of the boy’s head, but now angled more on the right side of him. There is yet to see this boy’s face. In this shot, there is now a fence in the background with some bushes. It looks like he is entering a yard, opening the gate. The fence isn’t wood or brick, but only thin wire.

0:02-0:03- The boy now enters a house, assuming it is his parents’ or guardian’s. We now see his body from the knees down. He is wearing average jeans with average tennis shoes. The door in light blue and floors are tile.

0:04- The boy enters a kitchen while ripping off his backpack, assuming after a long day at school. The clock in the back read 3:35, so it can be assumed. The camera is placed in a room next to the kitchen but as if the audience is watching the child from inside that room. The kitchen is average as well. There is a table with chairs in the center, and a counter and sink in the back with a big window above. There is also a silver, two-door refrigerator. The floors are black and white tile. In the room we are watching from, there is a painting of hand prints on the wall. Maybe it is one of each children living in that house, therefor six, or the one child’s hand several times, in several colors. It is hard to tell, but the hands are all the same size. Beside the picture, there are some color pencils of some sort, assuming the boy likes to draw or color often. There is also some counters and cabinet space in this room as well.

0:05-0:06- The boy then opens one side of the refrigerator. We can now see that there is some art work that has been attached with magnets. We can assume that the boy might have made them from school. From the new angle of the camera, from a floor view, we can see that the table only has two chairs. This could indicate there are only two people living in that house, and the boy might have just one parent.

0:07- We can now see what is inside of the refrigerator and it’s not much at all. There are three containers of some sort of left over food. There is one container of a dip perhaps. One jar of salsa and a box filled with some substance that is unknown because of the angle of it. We can also see a part of the back of the boy’s head, and we can tell is looking at the same things we are.

0:08-0:09- Here the audience can see the boys face through the opening between the door of the refrigerator and the side of the refrigerator. His face looks disappointed at what he sees. His eyes are looking down and his face as a whole doesn’t look pleased.

0:10- 0:11- The camera changes again to a view of the whole refrigerator, and we can now see some condiments on the door. The boy looks over at them and back quickly. We can now see another shelf in the refrigerator that has three more little containers with some sort of left over food. Over all, the refrigerator doesn’t look very appetizing.

0:12- The boy then steps upon one of the wooden chairs that he placed in front of the counter and some of the cabinets. We can assume he has closed the refrigerator door and moved the chair to see what other kinds of food are in the cabinet. The camera is back to just about where it was when it was in the other room, next to the kitchen. We can see more of a child’s art work on the front of the refrigerator too.

0:13-0:14- Now, the boy opens up the cabinet door. We can see what’s inside because the camera is now behind the boy’s head, but it is focused on the cabinet itself. We can see some flour and spices within two shelfs in the cabinet. There might be some sugar and meat seasoning, but there’s not much, or at least not many items a child around nine or ten can put together for a snack.

0:15- The new camera angle points right into the face of disappointment. His hazel/green eyes still looking into that cabinet, waiting for his favorite snack to magically appear. His lips not looking like they are going to smile anytime soon.

0:16-0:17- We are back to the camera angle in the next room looking into the kitchen. The boys seems to have just gotten down from the chair and starts to head out of the room from where he came in the first place. We can still see the disappointment on his face as well. The audience can tell that he knows that there is nothing to eat, but it seems like he is used to it. He might be leaving because there is no more hope for anything good to happen in that room. It seems like the boy accepts the fact that there is no food, and he will have to wait until later to eat. The boy might be finding something else to do with his free time he has since eating is out of the picture.

0:18- This is a new angle of the boy walking out of the room. It is closer to his face, and the audience can now see only his upper body. Here, we see the boy taking one last, quick look at the refrigerator while leaving. He looks at it up to down, looking very disappointed and scared because of not knowing when he will eat. The boy then walks out of view.

0:19-0:24- The commercial then cuts to an older lady, around 30, facing the camera. She is standing in that same kitchen, speaking to the camera. She has short blonde hair and blue eyes. She is wearing a shirt with a pink pattern and a navy blue blazer. In the corner of the screen, there is the words “Feeding America” in orange and green writing. The lady then talks to the camera for about five seconds.

0:25-0:30- For the rest of the commercial, the logo of the organization is presented in large words. It says “Feeding America” with their website “FeedingAmerica.org” underneath. The audience can assume that the people of the commercial would like the audience to visit the website and find out more about this organization.

This commercial clearly indicates that there is an issue with hunger. Children come home hungry from a long day of school and have very little to eat or no food at all. This commercial is an advertisement for an organization that feeds the hungry. By the title of the video, we know that the boy could not find food because there is no food at the local food banks. Because of that, the woman at the end was most likely saying something along the lines as to why people should donate, most likely with a depressing fact about child hunger.

Moving Image – socrateslee13

0:00 – 0:03) The commercial begins by stating the date and time of that particular day. Within the first scene is a man of Caucasian decent who appears to be wearing a short sleeve polo shirt with the buttons undone. He is also wearing shorts, with a hat and he has a low cut hairstyle with a beard. In his hands is a little boy, the two of them are smiling at each other. They appear to be inside a garage or storage room with the door open because the sunlight is beaming down on his shoulder indicating it is mostly in the afternoon between 12:oopm and 3:00pm.

0:04 – 0:07) The man appears to speaking to the little boy while he is holding the little boy in his arms. The man looks outside and continues to talk to the boy with a smile on his face. As he continues to speak to the boy, the man stepped forward towards the outside. The man then looks back at the little boy and smiles at him, then the man jogged forward outside.

0:08 – 0:11) While holding the boy the man is outside and it appears to be raining. The man looks down for a second possibly because a rain drop may gotten into his eye. While the man looked, the little boy looks around the surrounding area. The little boy continues to look back and forth with the facial expression of confusion and trying to take everything in around him.

0:12 – 0:15) As the boy continues to look around the man turns to face the house, the man and little boy came out of. The man begins to jog back into the house and as the man is doing so the little boy has a smile on his face. Next to the man and the little boy appears to be a white SUV which could possibly be the man’s or the owner of the house because they were standing in the driveway.

0:16 – 0:19) Now they’re inside the house, the man is looking at the little boy has a smile on his face. On the screen, reads the words, “It only takes a moment. ” Then a second later pops up the words, ” to make a moment.” As the words appear on the screen the little boy is smiling looking outside and the man is smiling looking at the boy.

0:20 – 0:23) The little boy begins to clap while smiling as he looks outside. The man continues to clap with the little boy and while the man speaks to the little boy the both of them smile as they look outside. While looking outside with a smile on his face the little boy puts out out his hand towards outside.

0:24 – 0:27) The screen fades black and on the black screen is the words ” Take time to be a dad today” written in white. The T in take is capitalized, however the rest of the phrase is all lower cased. Then the screen remains black but the words change. Now on the screen is the words “#makeamoment” the hashtag and the a in “#makeamoment” are orange, while the rest of the words are white.

0:28 – 0:31) The “#makeamoment” slogan remains up there but slowly fades away to a black screen ending the commercial.

Moving Image-Princess272

0:00- 0.05- During the opening portion of this drinking and driving council ad, two wine glasses slowly move toward each other. This slow movement of the wine glasses filled with red wine symbolizes not only the act of toasting a drink with friends, but also the impairment of alcohol to the nervous system.

0:06- 0:12- This part of video depicts the crashing of the two wine glasses into each other. This resulted in glass shattering and the red wine spilling everywhere. The smashing of these two into each other symbolizes a car crash due to one or more parties being intoxicated with alcohol. While the shattering glass shows the destructive power behind the crash, the red wine is a representation of blood from the victims.

0.013- 0:15- In these two seconds, two beer glasses, filled with beer, move toward each other much like the wine glasses. They have a generic university logo using a big U in order to represent college students drinking.

0:16- 0:21- The beer glasses come into contact with each other and shatter much like the wine glasses again. The only difference is the amount of beer compared to the wine. The wine was a much smaller amount of liquid compared to the beer. This alludes to the mass amount of beer compared to that of wine needed in order to get drunk.

0:22-0:30- Two glasses of some sort of dark liquor on the rocks move toward each other at the same moderate slow pace as the other two clips. The difference is when a hand comes in and stops one of the two glasses from moving forward. This represents a friend not allowing another friend to either drink another drink when they should stop, or not allowing a drunk friend to drive home. In both cases, the shattering of the glasses was prevented.

(0:01-0:05)
The ad begins with a teenage girl at night that seems to be doing her homework. She is intently looking at the paper and pauses to ask for help. As she glances up at a man that looks as though could be her father, he approaches her, also looking down at the paper ready to help.

(0:06-0:09)
When the girl turns around to ask the man a question, he pulls out his cell phone. He then holds it behind her back so she cannot see that he has it out. The man proceeds to type the problem into the calculator app on the cell phone. He attempts to impress the girl with his knowledge and ability to help, when it was the work of the calculator.

(0:10-0:12)
She turns around to thank him for the help and the man just shrugs and pints to his head. He does this suggesting that he had known the answer off the top of his head and was glad to help.

(0:13-0:18)
It is a new day as indicated by light shining through the windows. The same man walks into the girls room holding a box of hair dye. He has a look of remorse and regret. It is clear something went wrong, as he previously had grayish-brown hair, but now has hot pink hair. The girl stares at him, flabbergasted, wondering why he would do such a thing. The look is one of such great confusion. The focus then shifts back to the man as he has the same devastated look on his face, while still holding up the box of dye that got him into this predicament. He did not get the results that he was anticipating prior to using it.

(0:19)
The scene has changed once again as an aerial view of a car attempting to parallel park is shown. The car is a silver, four-door sedan.

(0:20-0:23)
The car is shown backing up too far in the process of parking, and eventually tapping the front bumper of the car behind it. The attention then shifts to the same man and girl in the car that was being parked. The man was the driver. Both of them jumped as the impact occurred, but it was not that hard. Nevertheless, shock came across both of their faces. Immediately after the initial reaction to the fender bender, he turns his head toward the girl. In a very calm fashion, he motions his hand towards the back of the car and seems to say something to comfort and console the girl because of what had just happened.

(0:24-0:26)
The man and girl are now in front of a house on what seems to be a beautiful day. She is standing next to him as he waters the plants. The flowers are pink, and as the focus turns to an up-close image of the flowers, yo can see that they are being sprayed with entirely too much force. It almost looks as though the pedals are about to fall off because of the water pressure.

(0:27)
A graphic appears on the screen that reads: ADOPTUSKIDS.org. There is a phone number underneath it as a reference to contact the promoted adoption agency.

(0:28-0:31)
The man continues to water the plants as the graphic remains on the screen for the conclusion of the video. And at the very end, she glances up at the man with somewhat of a happy look of admiration. It was as if she was just happy to be there in his presence.

Conclusion: I’m sure that this ad can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. To me, I saw it as a powerful message about adopted children. The man was messing up and doing unorthodox things throughout the course of the video, but he was there for the girl. That’s really all that matters. Since the girl was previously up for adoption, she may not have felt wanted in the past.
