Global Warming by definition is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. The name “Global Warming” can give off a less than threatening vibe to many young adults, seasoned old timers, or to anything in between.

As technology advanced, so did the average life span of the human race. Over time we have came across many new diseases, some with a higher severity. Out of every single disease, there is one that still stands out and strikes curiosity, Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. Discovered in 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in brain tissue along with behavioral changes, which inevitably led to the discovery of Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer’s Disease accounts for 60% to 70% of cases of dementia, which also affects the brain tissue and the way the brain functions.

The brain itself is a complex organ. Signals that form memories and thoughts move through an individual nerve cell as a tiny electrical charge. Nerve cells connect to one another at synapses. When a charge reaches a synapse, it may trigger release of tiny bursts of chemicals called neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters travel across the synapse, carrying signals to other cells. Scientists have identified dozens of neurotransmitters. In other words, this is how the brain communicates with the body and allows the body to carry out the necessary functions. In Alzheimer’s Disease, plaques are found between the dying cells in the brain from the build-up of a protein called beta-amyloid. The tangles created from these plaques are within the brain neurons from a disintegration of another protein, called tau(Medicine Plus 3). These built up protein clumps found around the neurons in the brain are the main cause of Alzheimer’s Disease. These clumps disrupt the way electrical charges travel within cells and the activity of neurotransmitters, making it difficult for the brain to carry out necessary actions.

Did you know that your drink maybe packed with sugar?

Childhood obesity is a nationwide epidemic throughout the United States. While there are many leading factors when it comes to what causes Childhood obesity one of the largest causes is from the consumption of sugary drinks. According to the CDC, “80% of youth consume sugar sweetened beverages,” but what they do not mention is what exactly a sugary drink consists of, posing the question for readers of what is a sugary drink ?

For most people when the thought of sugary drinks comes to mind the though of soda and energy drinks are what constitutes as a sugar drink, however it is actually so much more. According to the National Cancer Center sugary drinks consist of fruit drinks, soda, energy drinks, sport drinks, and sweetened waters (Ogden, 5). The American Heart Association also gives a list of what is included in sugary drinks, including sweetened teas to the list as well (Go, 1). aid, Soda such as Coke, and Energy Drinks such as Monster or Red Bull. Sugary Drinks are the largest source of added sugars in a youth’s diet and also the main source of calorie intake (Harris, 2). What this means is that when a child drinks a soda they are taking in a lot of calories at one time, often more than a body needs which then is not processed properly and becomes fat.

The largest problem that Americans face with determining if a drink is considered bad for you before even looking to see the sugar content is due to the fact that many sugary drinks have positive health claims attached to help hide the fact that they are packed with sugar (Harris, 2). One of the most common poor drink purchases are sports drinks, such as Gatorade. On the Gatorade label it has the word Performance in large print as well as the phrases thirst quencher and natural flavors. Gatorade is also know as an electrolyte sports drink, and kids see many different athletes supporting these products families are lead to assume this is good for their child. What they don’t know is that Gatorade is packed with 35 grams of sugar in a 20oz bottle. Just think 35 grams of sugar is equal to 8.75 teaspoons of sugar, and that’s a lot of sugar in a bottle.

While there is many different types of drinks out there, they can almost always be classified as sugary or not. By making people more aware of what is bad for children, families will be able to make more informed choices when shopping for beverages and hopefully that will help with the childhood obesity epidemic that sweeps our country.

A concussion is when the head receives a blow causing the brain to shake inside of the skull and strike the inside of the skull. In a sense, it creates a contusion on the brain affecting some cognitive abilities.

Symptoms of a grade 1 concussion include being dazed and an inability to follow directions or think clearly, states Brain Injury Association of America. With a grade 2 concussion, the individual experiences similar symptoms that last longer and may also suffer amnesia. With a grade 3 concussion, the person losses consciousness and experiences more serious symptoms such as a noticeable change in brain function, behavior and cognition. In addition to the cognitive symptoms, concussions may also cause a person to feel nauseous, dizzy or tired, notes WebMD. People with concussions may experience blurred vision, difficulty balancing and sensitivity to light. Changes in sleeping patterns or mood may also occur.

Most people fully recover from a mild concussion with rest, according to WebMD. Even if symptoms disappear quickly after a mild concussion, the brain is still healing and is more prone to injury. Repeated concussions may cause permanent damage and inhibit a person’s ability to learn, speak or move. Concussions are common after car and bike accidents, fights and falls.

Playing competitive ice hockey for the past 15 years has given me a broad insight to the damage that is associated with concussions. I personally have had 6 concussions. Some mild, and some severe. after a few concussions you really start to notice the long term side affects. standing up too quickly makes you black out, exerting too much energy too quickly without warming up makes you dizzy, and concentrating for long periods of time gives you migraines. I can personally say that concussions have a huge impact on your everyday life if not treated properly. I was young and dumb and did not use the proper healing procedure. I refused to sit out for the required time period because all I wanted to do was play. I had all of my coaches and teammates pushing me to get back on the ice. I gave in before I was cleared and now I am suffering the consequences. I should have listed to the doctors and trainers but i was naive and just wanted to play. Now a few pointless hockey games are going to affect me for the rest of my life.

Next most popular sports injuries are ligament strains and tears. Each sport has different injuries. Where as in baseball a common injury is called Tommy John syndrome. The Tommy John surgery repairs an injured elbow ligament. It’s most commonly done on college and pro athletes, especially baseball pitchers. But it’s sometimes done on younger people as well. The surgery is named after former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tommy John. In 1974, he underwent the first surgery of this type.Tommy John surgery is also called UCL reconstruction. UCL is short for ulnar collateral ligament.During Tommy John surgery, a surgeon replaces the injured UCL with a tendon taken from somewhere else in the patient’s body.

In more physical contact sports other injuries to ligaments are more common. ACL and MCL tears are very common in sports such as football and soccer. Both ligaments are located in the leg and the injury frequently occur simultaneously. A Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injury can cause knee pain and instability, forcing you to take time off from your usual activities. While resting the knee will help prevent further damage, rest alone won’t speed up the healing process. If you want to heal your MCL as quickly as possible, you need to relieve the pain and stimulate blood flow in the soft tissue deep beneath the skin as stated by King Brand. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears are usually much more serious than a MCL injury and almost always requires surgery. If it is in fact a tear and not just a strain, surgery is required if you ever want to properly walk again let alone play again. The surgery is the first step but the rehabilitation is the most important part. It is very long, tedious and honestly painful. You have to try and get all of your flexibility back because your tendon is going to be extremely tight after the surgery.

A music educator is one of the greatest and well equipped entrepreneurs the school system has at their disposal.  From the start music educators are put into a circumstance of having to be in strict competition with other educators as well as within themselves. What I mean by this is that being a music educator in order to have a higher rate of success it falls on the shoulders of the individual to be well rehearsed in many fields not only those of music. I myself know this first hand being a music education major at Rowan University.  An entrepreneur is someone who takes on the a job or task that has considerable risks with no guarantee of a certain outcome. A music educator is the epitome of an entrepreneur.

One may ask how is it that a music educator can be seen as an entrepreneur? But they are actually one in the same when put on a panel. Being a music educator there are many obstacles your forced to overcome if you plan to be successful. Initially before becoming an educator we are first be music education major getting into the program we are put to the test not only to see if we are academically proficient but after an audition if were well versed in our primary instrument. As a music education major one is stretched well across the field of what makes someone successful. At a given time a music education major will be taking between 6 to 8 classes, due to having to not only take general education classes but music course such as theory and performance based classes as well. Just as an entrepreneur a music educator must be well versatile in time management, finding time to complete task even if it means losing out on sleep or taking a cut in pay in order to keep your business running.

Not only is it important that as a music educator they be well-trained in their field of music but must have a background of marketing themselves and their product. An Entrepreneurs job is to push what he or she is selling meaning they must have a plan in order to give them the best odds. An educator has the same job our job not only entails on having the music and performance on our minds but we must be able to advocate for our programs whether that be for funding or recruitment. Graduating with a music education major gives the opportunity to work within the school system but able to do private business as well which can range from private lessons to working for a music store that does lessons of their own. It is of utmost importance that being in the field of music and being an entrepreneur one must but self-motivated and willing to fail because failures will come along the way. With the failure it is important to be able to self evaluate to fix the things that went wrong.

Taking a look at all the similarities that each of these occupations shows that by being a music educator it puts them at advantage. Being that all throughout the time of schooling in the music education program its done nothing but prep individuals to be in charge of their own futures. Whether that be in the music field or not they have a certain quality skill set that it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.

Definition Argument — socrateslee13

Gun control laws were constructed to reduce the overall crimes that are involved with guns. The purpose behind gun control laws was for people to protect themselves from predators, reduce gun deaths, and prevent injustices from occurring. Gun control laws are defined as laws passed to restrict the sale of guns and control their use. By controlling the use of guns such as people using them to protect themselves, is necessary because a study revealed that five women are murdered with guns every day in the United States. The study later stated a woman’s of being murdered increases 500% if a gun’s present during a domestic dispute. Another method for people to protect themselves would be how gun control would lead to fewer suicides. One study unveiled that in between 1999 and 2013 there were 270,237 firearm suicides in the United States, accounting for all about 52% of all suicides during those years. With these numbers if we were to have more control on gun laws the result would be fewer suicides.

Other countries who have more restrictive gun laws then the U.S. have a lower gun homicide and suicide rates. Due to gun control laws countries have reduced gun related crimes. Another reason would be that gun control laws would reduce the number of accidental gun deaths. A study revealed that approximately 50% of unintentional fatal shootings were self-inflicted. An additional reason would be that the presence of a gun makes a conflict more violent. A study has shown that the weapons used in altercations were those closest at hand. Without the guns being present the outcomes of some altercations would not escalate to deaths.

Gun control laws can lead to preventing injustices from occurring because when looking into some cases it has been found that legally own guns have been frequently stolen and used by criminals. An additional reason would be that guns are rarely used for self defense. A study revealed that of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011  235,700 victims used guns to protect themselves. Another injustice that gun control could prevent is that high capacity magazines have often turned murders into mass murders. One study has unveiled that when high capacity magazines were used in mass shootings, the death rate rose 63% and the injury rate rose 156%.

Welcome to America

Welcome to the land of the free. Where everyone who isn’t born in the United States wants to live. It is a place for you to come here and fulfill whatever dream it is that you have. It is a place for you to come and be successful. That’s what they want one to believe but in reality if you aren’t a true American meaning “born in America” then you most likely aren’t welcomed to live here. Even if you are born here but are a darker shade of skin color than white, then this might not be the country for you. This seems to be a country ruled by people particularly of the Caucasian race. If you aren’t a Caucasian American then its looking very unpredictable if you are living in America. It’s harder to live here because you aren’t treated equal. The law makes it sound so sweet and amazing like you are getting all of the freedom you deserve when on reality its just as hard to come by as person trying to catch a cab in New York City at rush hour.

America is so corrupt, and the government will make you feel like you don’t deserve to live here if you aren’t a certain race. Racism in this country may have seemed to have died down but it id just getting started. Unarmed African American men are being brutally murdered by police officers. The men and women that we are supposed to seek out to for protection are the one doing the killing. “U.S. police have killed at least 194 black people in 2016, according to a project by The Guardian that tracks police killings in America”. That number is absurd and we must speak out on this topic because you cant talk about it enough. If the government is just going to keep letting the police do this to our citizens who knows what they are going to do next.

This is a country that aliens love so much, but the country doesn’t love them back. America gets what they want and don’t want. They have made it clear already that they don’t want people who are black even if you were born here so they are trying to get rid of that minority slowly with the prison systems and now with just blatant murder. Its not just black people its Hispanics and other foreigners too.” Obama administration deported a record 438,421 unauthorized immigrants in fiscal year 2013, continuing a streak of stepped up enforcement that has resulted in more than 2 million deportations since Obama took office, newly released Department of Homeland Security data show.” America’s excuse for not letting Hispanics across the border is “they’re taking all of our jobs”. That is such a terrible excuse because what’s the difference whose working the job as long as it gets done. Most likely that job would’ve been up for grabs because most Americans are already lazy so they wouldn’t have gone out to get the job in the first place. This country is just so greedy with everything it is going to bite us in the butt in the long run if we don’t change our ways soon.

I can’t have respect for a country that is so stubborn and doesn’t respect it’s own citizens. It is quite disrespectful how we do our own citizens in this country no matter the color of their skin we should not discriminate, we should not teach our children to hate anyone. Let alone to grow up and hate a person or a race because of the color of their skin. That is the way America still is today whether we talk about it or not it still is a problem children are still being raised racist. They aren’t being born with that sense of hate in their body they are being taught that hate. A baby isn’t going to grow up just hating a person because they are a darker skin color. Any type of baby is open to anything that he or she is taught by the parents and obviously the school system in which they attend. Although the problem of racism might not be as severe as it was back in the early 1900s it still is a factor today. This country is getting back to its racist ways and many people of a different race other than Caucasian are not going to accept that type of treatment ever again. Believe that there is going to be a war if white people try to treat black people like they used to. This country has already used drugs to help eliminate some of the black population in America. They “founded” the drug called cocaine and they brought it to America they found out that this drug is very addicting and money can be made off of it. They brought that drug to a bunch of cities who are poor and don’t really have much going for them but drugs. They basically taught people how to make it in their homes but it isn’t as pure as the actual powder. It is a knockoff brand with basically the same effects called crack. So people who live in the hood took that idea and tried to make an extra buck.Knowing that the people of these poor cities would take advantage they basically set a trap. The police force used that crime of selling crack as basically attempted murder so all of the drug dealers who would be selling this drug would go to jail for a long time and everyone who was actually taking the drug would go to jail too if caught or die eventually from this drug because it wasn’t pure at all but it was addicted and people would share needles and whoever had diseases would share needles and kill off each other like some type of plague.

“Assault Weapons”

Many people like to throw around the word “Assault Weapon” a lot. Reporters love utilizing the phrase as a buzzword, that delivers fear into your heart and the hearts of your loved ones. It is tossed around during debates as if nobody really knows the definition of an assault weapon. What exactly constitutes an “assault weapon”?

First we need to define what an assault rifle is. An assault rifle is any selective-fire weapon that utilizes an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine. In order to be considered an assault rifle, a firearm must be capable of selective fire, have an intermediate-power cartridge with more power than a pistol but less than a standard rifle, its ammunition must come from a detachable box magazine, and have an effective range of at least 110 feet. Any weapon that does not meet all of these requirements is not an assault rifle.

To make matters confusing, legislation came up with the term “Assault weapons” in an attempt to rush the idea of fear into certain firearms. Bruce Kobayashi and Joseph E. Olson explain, “Prior to 1989, the term ‘assault weapon’ did not exist in the lexicon of firearms. It is a political term, developed by anti-gun publicists to expand the category of ‘assault rifles.'” Assault weapons are usually defined as semi-automatic (one shot per pull of the trigger) firearms that have features that are associated with military firearms. A firearm is considered an assault weapon if it is a rifle type, semi-automatic, has the ability to accept a detachable magazine, and two of the following; folding/telescoping stock, a pistol grip beneath the action of the weapon, a bayonet mount, flash suppressor/ threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor, a grenade launcher.

The M4A1 Carbine is a U.S. Military Service assault rifle. It is fully automatic and fires 950 rounds per minute. Automatic firearms are also called machine guns which were made illegal to sell or transfer in 1986 under federal law.

The Colt AR-15 is sold legally in the United States and is semi-automatic. For the reason that the it is semi-automatic, it fires much slower than the M4A1 does at only 45 rounds per minute which is comparable to other semi automatic rifles. David Kopel explained in the Wall Street Journal, “What some people call ‘assault weapons’ function like every other normal firearm- they fire only one bullet each time the trigger is pressed… Some of these guns look like machine guns, but they do not function like machine guns.” By saying this, Kopel stresses the fact that guns like the AR-15 function just as normally as a hunting rifle does, and does not have the capability to put forward the damage that an assault rifle can create.

Not only do “assault weapons” such as the AR-15 work just like a regular hunting rifle. It also works just like every other gun sold in America; shotguns, ranch guns, and even pistols. However, the design of the gun affects the perception of many citizens who do not know any better. According to a 1998 report by the Violence Policy Center, “The weapon’s menacing looks, coupled with the public’s confusion over fully automatic machine guns versus semi-automatic assault weapons- anything that looks like a machine gun is assumed to be a machine gun- can only increase the chance of public support for restrictions on these weapons.” Much of the population is uneducated on the topic of guns and do not understand the difference between the “menacing” AR-15 and any machine gun.

In 1989, after the Cleveland Elementary School Shooting in Stockton California that left thirty-two injured and five children dead, anti-gun lobbyists and the media began campaigning against AR-15’s and other “military style”firearms which caused the public to believe that these ordinary rifles are as dangerous as fully automatic, militaristic, machine guns. The shooter, Patrick Purdy, used a semi-automatic weapon to shoot 106 rounds in 180 seconds. Purdy then took his own life with a pistol, not an assault weapon. These numbers are easily recreateable by any semi-automatic weapon, regardless of the aesthetics of the firearm. The amount of dead and injured children would have skyrocketed had the gun been fully automatic. Although semi-automatic weapons are dangerous nonetheless, to make some of them illegal (although they each posses the same amount of power and danger) based off it’s appearance instead of its functionality is completely erroneous.

In 1994, Bill Clinton signed the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protections Act) which prohibited the manufacturing and civilian transfer, possession, or use of semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity magazines for ten years, to expire on September 13, 2004. The NRA (National Rifle Association) opposed the ban, stating the fact, “‘Assault weapons’ are used in only one percent of all crimes,” which was then proven by the Department of Justice in 1999. The act also banned the transfer or possession of Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices, which is defined in the act as, “any magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device manufactured after [September 13, 1994] that has the capacity of, or that can be readily restored or converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition,” which is absurd after the realization that many guns typically take more than ten bullets. However, the Assault Weapons Ban incorporated a grandfather clause which holds that possession or transfer of weapons or ammunition that was possessed lawfully before the date of enactment is allowed. This means that while the manufacturing of these guns have come to a halt, the same amount is still on the streets in the hands of people, still holding the power to be abused.

As one can see, an “Assault Weapon” is in no way different than it’s semiautomatic counterparts. Although they may look much more intimidating than most other guns on the market, they do not function any differently. An assault weapon is just as dangerous as the pistol that just barely missed the classification. To make the assumption that they are more dangerous to our society followed by attempts to remove them from the hands of families requiring protection is the most erroneous and frightening portion of the situation. Our government means well, which is why the situation is so counterintuitive.

A concussion is when a person the brain is bruised because they were hit really hard or hit something really hard. Brain injuries is a very serious decision in sports because players get injured all the time. Inside our skull we have our brain and if that something happens where a persons brain bangs into the skull it could cause some harmful things depending on how hard the brain hit against the skull. Also, the brain is surrounded by fluid and 3 layers that is between the brain and the skull but they only can help to a limit when the brain hits against the skull.

Rugby is a sport that involves no pads, and older versions of the American football helmets from back in the day. Rugby is played around the world from America, New Zealand, Japan to list a few. People say rugby is like American football but without pads, however, that is not the case the difference is:

  • They use a different method for tackling a player that has the ball.
  • The ball is shaped differently than the American football.
  • The scoring is different. A “try” (touchdown) is 5 point, instead, of 6 points like the NFL.
  • The time of play is not split into 4 quarters instead it’s split into 2 halves.
  • The equipment that rugby players wear is different from the NFL’s equipment.

Black lives matter was created because of the the racism that African Americans are faced over 50 years ago. Black lives matter is a non violence movement that was created based on the killings of African American of society over the past years by whites.  Over the past couple of years there has been a dramatic increase of police brutality. We know that the police are suppose to protect us not to kill us.  This has been a major problem in today’s society and in the African American community   , mainly the males are more target then the females.

Because of the increase of African American killing had cause a lot of fear with in the community. In many cases, the police are founded not guilty even if its evidence pointing towards a officer. For example, Sandra Bland was killed by police officer while incarcerated. Bland was pulled over because she failed to signal when she was changing lanes.in the video when he first pulled her and was telling her to get out the car, he was being aggressive. Her death was mysterious because she only spend 3 nights in jail and was alive when booking but she all of sudden died in police custody. The news showed a video of her dead in a suppose to be mugshot that was next to the one she took when she first arrived at the sight.  When the case went to trial the officer who pulled her over   and other in the jail was trailed. It was evidence against each of the officers, but when it came to determine whether or not if the officers guilty or innocent .  The court came up with letting the officers off and they can go back to work.

This made the African American community outrage and riots starts to break out world wide because of the decision that was made even with the evidence they had. That’s where Black lives matter came about because they understand that people are up set but starting riots will not make this go away. The Black live matter movement made people understand that the justice system is unfair but we have to remain together in order to stand strong.
