Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

It took me a while to figure out what I want to do my research paper on. I actually thought about the problems that we face today in the world  , which the most common problem is police brutality. I noticed that police brutality is a a wide concept , so I decided to focus on one group  that which is African Americans.  I found my sources by using google scholars to make sure it all facts.  I achieve this goal by making sure all my sources are coming for a reliable website and making sure I am convincing people about the topic I am researching.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I achieve this goal by making sure the evidence is proving my point that I will like to get across in the paper.

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

In my Research paper, I started off not achieving this goal because I actually didn’t have a purpose for this paper.  I just knew what I wanted to talk about, but didn’t have a plan for how I could convince people to keep reading this paper.  As time kept going, I started to achieve this goal by creating a thesis, which in other words is an argument for my paper. My purpose for my paper changed from just how law enforcement killings have increased dramatically to how law enforcement killings among African Americans had increased over the years.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

In order for me to meet this goal I had to make sure that I had a thesis to help start with writing my paper.  With a thesis, I was able to accomplish what evidence I would include in order for it to support my overall thesis of my research paper.  While conducting research for my topic, I had to make sure that the evidence was actually useful and insightful for what I wanted to educate my readers about.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I didn’t actually achieve this goal because I was focusing on my thesis do the whole paper, by trying to get my point across. My paper started off as a opinion paper where I was citing information and for the analysis I was stating my opinion instead of stating why the source was connecting back to the overall question of the paper.

Causal Argument- jsoccer5

Do you know what is in that?

Childhood obesity is one the countries biggest health problems right now, and there is really no cure. In an article produced by the American Society for Nutrition they discuss how obesity is the reflection of the interactions of different factors such as, genetics, cultures, environments, socioeconomic status and behaviors. These factors are play a role in the reasons why people eat what they eat, specifically the consumption of sugar. For most Americans their main source of added sugars comes from their intake of sugary drinks. Consumption of these sugary drinks are incredibly high and is linked to being one of the leading causes in childhood obesity nationwide.

Sugary drinks are available everywhere from stores to schools to vending machines, making it nearly impossible for children not to get their hands on it. Due to easy access to sugar drinks such as cola, the consumption of these drinks sky rocket. In an article written by Roderick McKinley he states that the average American consumes 1.6 cans of soda a day, resulting in them consuming more than 500 cans of soda in one year. Think about one 12 ounce can of Coca-Cola. That can contains 39 grams of sugar. According to an article published by Sugar Science “the average amount of added sugar a child should consume in one day is 18.5 grams,  however this may vary based on age but will never be more than 25 grams.” If a child consumes just one can of Coca-Cola a day they have already doubled their sugar intake for the day. What is most concerning is that the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend “the total intake of discretional calories, including sugars and fats, should range between 5-15% per day, yet most American children consume about 16% of their intake from added sugars alone.” While many Americans are shocked to find out these statistics they also don’t always understand where these added sugars are coming from, and do not seem to realize that they come from the drinks they are consuming.

These sugary drinks are often consumed without much thought into the fact that the person consuming the drink is drinking large amounts of sugar as well as drinking a large percentage of calories and doing so very quickly. What becomes the problem is that many people consume more of this than their body needs and in an advice column published by the Arch Pediatric Medical Journal they state that these drinks are all consumed before a person’s body can realize they have consumed it as well as before the body has time to realize it is full the same way a body would when eating solid food.  The World Health Organization also adds to this by stating “these drinks have little nutritional value and do not provide the same feeling of fullness as solid food does,” making it so they continue to consume more even though their body has had enough. The more people consume sugary drinks the less their body breaks it down for energy resulting in it becoming fat, and over many years of doing this after, especially after starting at a young age, the fat continues to add up ultimately resulting in the person becoming obese. In a study conducted by the American College of Nutrition they found that “Obese children consume significantly more servings of fats and sugary beverages than non-obese children,” proving that the correlation between obesity and sugary drinks is in fact a direct cause to this nationwide epidemic.

Childhood Obesity may never be cured as it has some many different causes, however it can be reduced. The CDC currently states that childhood obesity affects about 12.7 million children. This amount of children could be reduced if the reduction of sugary drink consumption goes down as well. While it will not reduce the consumption of sugary drinks and its affects on childhood obesity by a lot, if parents become more educated and adopt healthy habits themselves, such as cutting back intake of soda, they will begin to influence their children and the children around them to do the same. As these educated parents, influence their children there is hope that in future generations obesity declines and is only a small percentage of the united states as those children will be able to provide the healthiest nutritional options for their future children.

Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I’m not going to lie, I could have done a bit better on this value. Sometimes I left feedback unanswered and didn’t revise when I should have. However, these incidents were not the majority. On the majority of my assignments, such as my first Stone Money assignment and my Research Proposal assignment, I replied to feedback with appropriate revisions. I did my best to improve my writing, not only in these cases, but in general, when I completed my short argument rewrites. In those cases I strove to add more content and research, such as adding a patient perspective into my Rebuttal Rewrite. This was not my strongest value, but I still demonstrated a sufficient understanding.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I have been quite active in discussing work with my Professor and others. I almost always replied to feedback, giving rewrites when required. This can be seen in my Definition Rewrite post. I also attended “office” hours on Monday, December 5th in order to literally converse about my writing. In class, I have discussed other student’s writing, helping them to understand assignments as they did the same for me, specifically in the Missing Dollar exercise. That was a collaboration between many students. Collaboration is an important part of the writing process, and I believed I engaged in a good amount in order to understand this value.

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I was given a great opportunity to demonstrate my understanding of this value, by giving feedback to three different students’ works as an exercise. My comments on yankeeskid6, prof2020, and dublin517’s posts provided insight on how I fully understood how to analyze text. analyzing my own text with the help of Professor Hodges was also very helpful. He helped me with my original Causal Argument, telling me that my argument that dysregulation is a part of college was both causation and definition. I fixed this in my Causal Rewrite, in which my argument was clearer. I feel I now have a great understanding of how to analyze text effectively in order to improve it.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I have met this core value, and demonstrated my proficiency in this value in many of my works. I have often gone above the minimum number of sources needed, showing my willingness to not just do what is required for a grade, but what is required for quality writing. I have also added new sources where none were required, demonstrating my willingness to always improve. These qualities are most evident in my Definition Rewrite, in which I exceeded the minimum number of sources and added new sources that were not present in the original Definition post.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I did my best to uphold this value by properly citing my sources and trying to interpret their content in the clearest way possible. This skill came from learning how to Purposefully Summarize, in which I summarized and interpreted three articles in order to fit three arguments. I was mostly successful in my summaries, but improved as the semester progressed. As for citations, I started weak but finished strong. Professor Hodges corrected my MLA-style citations in my original Stone Money post, which were corrected in my Stone Money Rewrite. I always gave proper credit to my sources. This may have been my strongest value of all.

Causal rewrite-Princess272

Many anti stem cell/ abortion groups believe a fertilized egg should have the rights of a human being. This idea to scientists is ludicrous, but these groups believe a fertilized egg will become a human being, period.  This idea is absurd because, after an egg is fertilized, it is not guaranteed to become a human being.

In all processes there are different steps to obtaining whatever goal was trying to be reached. Just because a process begins, does not mean that ultimately it would finish successfully. An example of this is a boy who dreamed of make his high school basketball team. One of the first steps was to get the paperwork done for said team. A physical must be obtained and waivers have to be signed. Once this is done and turned in, he can now try out for the team. The fact that this first step was completed does not indicate he will be on the team when tryouts are finished; he was merely eligible to be tested to see if he could be on the team. The concept should be applied to a fertilized egg. There are many inhibiting factors that may inhibit the fertilized egg from developing into a human.

Another way a fertilized egg can fail to develop into a human being is failing to make it to the womb and becomes trapped inside of the Fallopian tube. This form of pregnancy is called an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnacies occur 1 in every 80 pregnancies. The newly fertilized egg is unable to escape the Fallopian tube and begins to attempts to develop. As a result, the egg inevitably dies, and the woman carrying this misplaced egg would need medical attention due to internal bleeding.

The process of a fertilized egg to become a zygote is not guaranteed. During the period known as “preimplantation development” about 50 percent of all fertilized eggs fail due to genetic errors. These errors do not result in deformed individuals nor miscarriage, but rather they just die. These blastocyts would never be able to develop past the point they already have, let alone becoming humans. The “preimplantation development” periods refers to when a fertilized egg attempts to embed itself into the uterine wall. After fertilization, newly formed embryos release a hormone known as trypsin. Trypsin signals the womb to prepare its lining for implantation; this allows for preimplantation development to occur, but fertilized eggs with genetic defects have altered signals. This causes for different hormones to be released. As a result, a stress response occurs in the uterine lining , making implantation next to impossible.

Even if a blastocyt overcomes the 50/50 chances of having an error in the DNA and was able to embed itself into the uterine wall, another barrier lies ahead. Miscarriage inhibits 10 to 25 percent of all clinically recognized pregnancies. Miscarriages are caused by many different reasons; they include hormonal problems, immune system responses to the newly formed embryo, infections, preexisting medical conditions in the mother, etc.

A fertilized egg does not mean a human would ultimately be developed over time. The major forces inhibiting the development of these fertilized eggs into human beings are ectopic pregnancies, mistakes in the genetic code, and the possibility of a miscarriage occuring. In all of these cases, the fertilized egg would never become a human being.

Esports? or sport

Competitive gaming or eSports without a doubt is emerging into the professional sports outlet. So much that it can easily compete with other big brand sports like Baseball and Football. Esports has been on the rise in North America for the past two years, with constant growing viewership counts and even now an entrance into some cable television networks, networks like ESPN and TBS. An on looker from the outside of this very large community may think this is a brand new trend. But when compared to the rest of the world such as Europe and Asia we see that this trend or as some may say, new found “sport”, has been around since the early 2000’s. Countries like South Korea have an outstanding communal following to the sport. They’ve had several broadcast stations dedicated to gaming tournaments and events.

At the same time the public population within these countries respect the image of the players behind the sport of competitive gaming. These foreign populations have such a different perspective on the matter. They respect these players and competitions to the same level of professional chess players.

You then turn your sights over to the Americas and there’s this sudden drop of respect. How is it that after almost 16 years of success in Europe and Asia competitive Gaming is finally scratching the surface of mainstream media in the states. Even with its growing popularity in NA it still seems difficult for the population to garner any respect for the game.

An example viewpoint of one demographic learning about eSports for the first time. This evidence comes from the HBO documentary show, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. On this episode they reported on the growing spectacle of eSports and how “gamers” are becoming millionaires off of playing video games and there is this new breed of cyber athlete. At the end of every episode they hold a short round table discussing the topics presented during the show. The reporter who lead the piece was at this round table as well as her other colleagues debating the fact of whether or not competitive gaming could be considered a sport or not. The lead reporter supported competitive gaming and truly believed it could be a sport, but then her colleague rebuttal-ed with a statement that shocked me, she went on to say “My issue with this is, its still not a sport its a game it just cant be a sport they are playing video games”.

This statement through me off a bit, what exactly are basketball players or baseball players playing? Is she saying that all sports are not games and are only recognized as sports? Is running around a court passing a ball to teammates not a game? The ignorance is very prominent within some older generations which can be understandable, since this is a very . As this round-table conversation progressed a question was then asked “Do you have the statistics of how many of the eSport spectators have attended Star Trek conventions?”  in response one replied “I’m sure there is a fair amount of overlap”. Its the misinterpretation and prejudgments that competitive gaming receives from the public that enrages this community and hinders its growth. The more validation the fans of eSports receive the more this new found sport will grow viewership wise and fan wise.

This then brings me to the point of, what makes sports so valuable in the first place? What effects do sports have on our society? Well one can say that sports are here for exercise and to keep children healthy. But what really makes it valuable is its social aspect. Sporting events bring thousands of people of all cultures together all at once. There are stadiums that can hold thousands of people, and are dedicated to sporting events in major cities. When there is an important match with great teams these stadiums sell out. Of course this isn’t breaking news, this has been going on for hundreds of years.

Thousands of families all around the world dedicate the time to sit down with their family and friends at home to watch a major sporting event on T.V. People around the world buy merchandise to represent their home teams or favorite teams and players. Schools around the world have their own sports programs so that students can figure out their potential in the world of professional sports. Sports creates communities. Communities of people that are passionate and engaged, communities that will do anything to support their brand of choice.

Some questions may be popping up as to how is eSports accessible to the public since it is gaining so much popularity? Well as presented earlier eSports has been just recently scratching the surface of live television and are being presented on channels like TBS and ESPN. What really kindled the fire to the growth of competitive gaming is live streaming. Broadcasting matches on websites like the ever popular Twitch.tv. Twitch allows anybody from anywhere to broadcast a game of their choosing to anybody around the world.

After some time those leagues that were discussed earlier, ESL and LCS caught on to the huge trend that was Twitch. So what better idea than to create official channels for their league and broadcast these professional matches to the ever expanding gaming community. Well it worked now some of the biggest eSport tournaments are broadcast-ed on Twitch. With some of these matches breaking 1 million concurrent viewers.

With this point made we can now see how important it may be to accept the sport of competitive gaming. Because behind eSports is a community, a community that is passionate but feels rejected by normal society. This community has grown exponentially and these people have found a place where they feel a sense of inclusion. What good comes from rejecting an up and coming sport that has millions of followers all around the world?

The awareness of the public is whats holding back this sport and going into the future I see nothing but growth and its eventual transition into a professional sport that can consistently gather more viewership than Basketball, Football or Baseball.

Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

Throughout this entire semester I have been revising my arguments and essays. My first drafts is where I start off with and as time goes on I revise and edit my work. For my causal argument I wrote a first draft, but about three weeks later I revised my work and made a second draft. I noticed I worded things confusingly and that I needed to clarify my argument. I also learned from my mistakes and how I can write more clearly. The two links below show my original draft and my second draft which has the improvements I later made.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I always listen to the advice my professors give me. I also have friends read my assignments before I submit them. For my definition essay, I realized I was not clear in my thesis. My professor commented on my work and I replied saying that I made changes to my essay. Sometimes I need someone else to read my work just to double check that everything makes sense.

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I wrote my causal argument based off of why I believe the NJ sales tax is not a regressive tax. I took into account that my professor was looking for specific keywords to show I had an argument. I highlighted all the keywords to show I was proving a point in my argument. Some examples of these keywords are: so, because, and even specific arguments that prove my point.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

In each assignment related to my research paper, I used sources to back my claim. A few of the sources were facts that I needed to know and others were articles with an author’s opinion. The facts that I researched helped me shape my own opinion. When I first picked this topic I did not really know if I considered the New Jersey sales tax to be regressive. While doing research I came across an article published by the New Jersey Department of Taxation which had a list of everything that was taxable and tax exempt. After reading this article I developed my own opinion based off of facts, which is stated in my definition essay, that I did not believe the tax was regressive toward people with low incomes.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

When I use outside sources for my essays, I use informal citations in my essay and then create a works cited page. It is very important to properly cite sources. In my definition rewrite, I used an informal citation for all three of my sources and then had a work cited page for my sources.  I think it important to give credit to other people for their own work.

Causal argument – smokesdabear

What really is holding back competitive gaming from becoming part of the mainstream, is the public. Accepting up and coming new trends can be difficult for the people who are accustom to the already established norm of their culture. Media outlets like CBS, HBO and TMZ in the past all have incorrectly defined the sport and have also given it a image that they believe fits their agendas. TMZ goes to the extant of writing “Question — What do pimply-faced geeks who play video games all day have in common with the 6’8″ demigods who roam NBA courts on a nightly basis???” In the description portions of one of their YouTube videos where they interview Rick Fox owner of Echo Fox (eSport Franchise) and also former NBA star for the Boston Celtics and LA Lakers. The exact same thing happens again in less than a month TMZ does another interview with Rick Fox and instead of fixing their mistakes they just repeat the cycle. TMZ goes onto writing “Beware NHL fans … Rick Fox says your sport will be overtaken … by nerds … ’cause the “League of Legends” team owner thinks eSports is primed to take hockey’s place as the fourth major sport in the U.S. in just TWO YEARS!”. This constant cycle of misjudging the eSport community just does not end.

For a news/media outlet to set specific physical standards for sports players just goes to show how ignorant some can be. Can this trend end? will the image that society gives video game playing ever change? If our media cannot accept this new outlet then the casual viewer will have no desire to follow eSports or learn about it. How did our culture come to know and love the sport of basketball or football? Well soon after the creation of these sports back in the late 1800’s, the creation of leagues rose and opened up the gates to the world of professional sports. with their own rules and regulations. They could turn a fun game to play and pass time, to something that can be considered a career, grant fame, fortune and set a standard of living that is now portrayed as the perfect life to regular society.

Esports just like professional sports started with its creation of leagues. Leagues that go by the name of Electronic Sports League (ESL) and League of Legends Championship Series (LCS). These are some of the larger brand leagues that come along with their own rules and regulations, Which is no different from from the NBA or the NFL What makes basketball and football so popular in North America is its ability to create rivalries between fans and players stemming off of the fact that each team represents a state or city. Which then causes an increase in enthusiasm and support for teams. Esports on the other hand is on the international level of fan bases. Where organisations can represent multiple countries rather than just national states.

Community and fan base is everything when it comes to sports along with professionalism and extreme consistency in the skill of said athletes. But if an entire culture is going to misinterpret the underlying definition of what a sport really is and what it adds to society then without a doubt mindsets will not change and this sport will belong in the niche category of sports.

America’s Illusion of a Free Country

America is supposed to be a free country, but its freedoms are restricted from people of color. It may seem counter intuitive that people of color migrating to America are coming here because of America’s freedoms, but find themselves living in a nation of imprisonment. For this country to be glorified as a free country, it has many ways to imprison people without them physically being imprisoned. America has crafted a tricky contract with many loopholes and fine prints for its so-called freedom.

If a person of color that is living in poverty was asked if they feel free in America, the negative answer might seem as a rebellion against America, but the evidence of their conclusion is right under our noses. America has pointed the finger at people of color blaming us for our situation but this evidence shows otherwise.

In America, there is a vast amount of unjust laws specifically created to unjustly send people to jail. More specifically, the Three-Strike Law, War on Drugs Act and the Stop-and-Frisk law, were designed to send people to jail, mostly whom are people of color. America don’t see anything wrong with these laws because people of color has been stereotyped as criminals. If it was possible to brainwash most people to place a negative stereotype on the minority, mistreatment of the minority will be justified. This has given the government and law enforcement the green light to harass, imprison, and abuse people of color with little to no consequence.

There was a law passed in New York called Stop-and-Frisk that goes against our 4th Amendment right. Stop-and-frisk made it legal for police officers to stop, search, and question any individual they thought had drugs, weapons, or other illegal contraband on their person. It is nearly impossible to see anything someone has on their person if it’s hidden by their clothing. To conclude that someone is possessing something illegal just by looking at them is a form of stereotyping. This law is a legal way to racially profile an individual. It is not a coincidence that, African-American and Latino communities located where Stop and Frisk is active are overwhelmingly targeted. Someone can be walking home innocently, and be stopped by police just because the police officer felt like it or stereotyped them as being a criminal. In the article “Stop-and-Frisk Campaign” on the “nyclu.org” they stated that “innocent New Yorker’s have been subject to police stops and street interrogations more than 4 million times since 2002.” This is a big problem that needs to be solved. This is a clear violation of rights, but America has let this law be active. Most Americans are not affected by stop and frisk so it is regularly ignored. On the behalf of the people living in the inner city, we feel like our rights are violated and we are discriminated against because of Stop and Frisk. In the Constitution, the 4th Amendment states that, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warren’s shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath of affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” Being a person of color isn’t illegal, nor is it probable cause for the police to stop and frisk someone.

Stop-and-Frisk was designed to arrest people, mostly whom are people of color, who were deemed suspicious of being involved in illegal activity. Because of negative stereotypes on people of color, these police officers have preconceived notions that people of color are criminals. Acting on suspicions with preconceived notions that people of color are criminals, will prevent law enforcement from doing their job correctly. Some people who are on the outside of the Black community will say the police are doing their job correctly but they aren’t. For example, when talking about Stop-and-Frisk Donald Trump said, in the “Presidential Debate,” that “it worked very well in New York, it brought the crime rate way down but you take the gun away from criminals that shouldn’t be having it.” Donald Trump has been known to openly stereotype people and this shows that people who stereotype, don’t see that it is unconstitutional. People like Donald Trump will never know what it’s like living in America and getting discriminated against just for being Black and simply walking down the street. To target a group of Americans, and strip them of any rights stated in the constitution is clearly unconstitutional. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure Americans that their constitutional rights are protected. To allow stop and frisk, the government is not upholding the constitution. Even if it worked as a deterrent, there is very little way to tell if someone is involved in illegal activity, when relying on suspicion. Suspicions are opinionated and is not something that should be a basis for a law. Laws affect our country in its entirety and they must be based upon facts not opinions.

Furthermore, laws before this were designed with prejudices and were deemed reasonable. The war on drugs act was created by President Richard Nixon in 1971. In the article “The United States War on Drugs” it’s written that “He proclaimed, America’s public enemy number one in the United States is drug abuse.” In all actuality, he knew he had two groups of people who could hurt his presidency. On one hand he wanted to get rid of the Hippies, who were against the war, and on the other hand he wanted to get rid of the Black Panthers, who were protecting the Black communities against discrimination and police brutality at all costs. To extinguish the two groups, Nixon associated the Hippies with marijuana and Black Panthers with heroin. This enabled law enforcement to eradicate both movements. As the age of the Hippies went away, so did the need to eradicate them. After the Hippies were extinguished, Latino’s took their place as the second target group. As for the Black Panthers, the Black communities never could recover from the connection with heroin. Even after the Black Panthers were eradicated, the Black communities were still subject to mass incarcerations due to drugs. They had no one to protect them against the very government that is supposed to protect them. This way of being tough on crime extended too many presidencies after Nixon.

Bill Clinton signed a crime bill in 1994, which enacted the three-strike law. The three-strike law was implemented to ensure that repeat offenders are kept in prison to serve 25 years to life sentences after committing a third offence. This meant that fewer people were being released from prison in turn increasing the prison population. Clinton wanted to show he was tough on crime during his campaign so he acted. Clinton followed past presidents who wanted to show they were tough on crime so he passed laws which created a spike of mass incarceration. Coinciding with the war on drugs act, the three strikes law filled prisons with a population of majority Blacks and Hispanics. It can be said that Bill Clinton took a page from Nixon’s book when he signed the crime bill in 1994. In the leading state of California, the prison population reached unthinkable numbers following this bill. By 2011, the prison population rose to almost double the prisons’ designed capacity. This overpopulation is the primary cause for the unconstitutional conditions found existing in the California prisons because it goes against health and safety regulations. Matthew Cate said, on “CNN.com” that “the governor and I strongly disagree with this ruling.” In that same article in 2006, “CNN” stated that “implementing the court’s ruling would result in up to 58,000 prisoners being released.” These prisons are populated by mostly Black’s and it can be speculated that the reason this problem is being over looked is because the population is mostly Black.

Though slavery is illegal, prisons has taken its place to strip people of their freedom. African-Americans are the leading population in these prisons because they commit crimes. In order for them to get incarcerated, the courts have to prove that they broke a law. Once someone is convicted of a crime they get thrown into the new slavery system. African-Americans, descended from slaves, living in poverty, commit street crimes because of their poverty, illiteracy and heritage. The legacy of slavery lives in our streets. Now, four hundred years later, conditions for the descendants of slaves still create criminality. Uneducated and impoverished, living in desperate communities, African-Americans in today’s inner cities are destined to commit street crimes. Slavery gave birth to street crime.

According to “History.com”, in 1619, slavery started when the first slave ships landed in the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia. Slaves, kidnapped from Africa to work for their slave owners, were tortures, forced to live in impoverished communities, forced to work for free, and deprived of the basic freedom to learn. Slave owners had complete control over the slaves, and they made it nearly impossible to survive. Slavery thrived for an excruciating 245 years. The Founding Fathers of America created the constitution, which would later free slaves. Slavery would then be a problem for African-Americans for the next 89 years. Slaves were freed by the 13th Amendment that was created in 1865.

When comparing 1619 and present day, they are like fraternal twins to each other. Although they may look different they are very similar. Both times involves, slaving, or imprisoning an extreme number of African-Americans, illiteracy in the African-American communities and severe poverty in those communities. Viewing the horrific timeline from 1619 to present day, there is a chain reaction of slavery, illiteracy, Jim Crow laws, and impoverished communities that produced street crime.

After slavery, African-Americans lived in poverty because they worked for very little pay. African-Americans could not make sufficient money ironically, because the only way to make sufficient money was to own farms. They could not own land, so they found themselves working in the same farms where they were once enslaved. Farmers were the driving force of America’s economy. Africans couldn’t own land because they were not considered citizens of the US. This is like problems we have today with wages and living conditions. According to the “United Sates Census Bureau,” in a chart of the “median household income”, the “average African Americans household makes only $33,321.” This is a little more than half of White household’s income. African Americans will get paid less than Whites who are doing the same job. There is a similarity with the pay because in the past African Americans always made less than Whites. Black ex-cons and White ex-cons are receiving different pay as well. Bruce Western, in the table three chart in his essay, “The Impact of Incarceration on Wage Mobility and Inequality,” claims that the average wages of African-American ex-cons are documented at $5.33 per hour, which is less than white ex-cons at $5.77. Trying to survive in society with these wages for both Whites and Black is nearly impossible. Most ex-cons end up living in the same environment that lead to their arrest. Even though both Black ex-cons and ex-slavers are free, theirs living situations seems all too familiar.

African-Americans have always been deprived of access to proper education. During slavery, it was illegal for slaves to learn so up until the end of slavery African-Americas didn’t learn. If you have generations of illiterate ancestors, this will negatively affect the learning ability for future generations. After slavery, Blacks were not allowed to go to the same schools as Whites because of Jim Crow laws. The schools that were available to Blacks were barely functional. If people are placed in an environment filled with poverty and illiteracy, street crime will be the result.

Black impoverished communities where made during segregation because African-Americans were not allowed to integrate into White communities. These communities were designed to be placed away from white communities. This is like the way communities are structured in present day. The structure of today’s communities started when America shifted from an agricultural economy to a factory driven economy in the 19th century. As the industrial age grew, and the agricultural age declined, people began to leave the farming life behind and move to cities and towns with factory jobs. The nation’s wage earnings began to come from people who were formerly self-employed but now employed by major corporations. Blacks and Whites where living in segregated communities, but they were more often working in the same factories in their cities and towns. This increase in the industrial age also came to a decline at the fault of the great depression. In 1929-39, America along with many other countries suffered from the largest economic fall in history. This economic fall forced many companies to lay off workers, causing vast unemployment and hardships. After 1939, the economy recovered after the New Deal and World War II’s contributions to the industrial industry. While things were getting better for Whites, Blacks were not as fortunate.

Whites began to leave the cities and move to suburban areas where blacks weren’t allowed. Public Housing policies were still preventing Blacks from taking most opportunities that were available to Whites. In a broadcast on “Fresh Air,” Richard Rothstein said that “the second policy, which was probably even more effective in segregating metropolitan areas, was the Federal Housing Administration, which financed mass production builders of subdivisions starting in the 30’s and then going on to the 40’s and 50’s in which those mass production builders, places like Levittown for example, and Nassau County in New York and in every metropolitan area in the country, the Federal Housing Administration gave builders like Levitt concessionary loans through banks because they guaranteed loans to lower interest rates for banks that the developers could use to build these subdivisions on the condition that no homes in those subdivisions be sold to African-Americans.” In this same broadcast, he also said that “This was to ensure that public housing would only be used to house people of the same race in which it was located.” This pushed Whites out of the public housing communities and trapped Blacks in. The overpopulation and low-income of communities made poverty spread like a disease.

As poverty started to grow people started turning to drugs. Drugs began to find their way to these impoverished communities after WWII. After WWII, war veterans returned home to these overpopulated and impoverished communities with bigger problems than the war to deal with. One of these problems was drug addiction. Drugs such as morphine and heroin was used on a regular basis in wars as pain killers. According to an article on “narconon.org,” “morphine was the only thing that made the gunshot, amputation and recovery tolerable.” Many soldiers became addicted to the drug and even after the war ended, they couldn’t shake the addiction. Heroin started getting made in the 19th century by boiling morphine. According to the same article, “in 1898, the Bayer pharmaceutical company began an aggressive marketing campaign to sell its commercial preparation of heroin. Heroin was heavenly promoted as being non-addicting, and therefore an excellent treatment for morphine addiction. In 1906, the American Medical Association approved Heroin for general use and recommended that is be used in place of morphine.” Heroin flooded the bodies of the solders and they had to feed their addiction. Returning home unemployed and living in poverty made it hard for them to buy the drugs they needed. If someone needs money, but they are unemployed they will do anything to obtain the money. Street crime is the easiest way to make money for people living in impoverished communities. Getting a gun on the street and robbing someone is easier than getting a job. People turn to street crime when they don’t see any other way to get money.

Cops have been able to hide their abuse of African-Americans because this street crime. Because of racism, African Americans have been getting slaughtered since the beginning of slavery and America have let cops who are slaughtering Blacks get away with it with little to no consequences. The slaughtering of Blacks has been normalized in America since slavery. During the time of slavery, Blacks were beaten, hung from trees, and abused, even by police. Blacks have always had trouble with police brutality and even in present day this hasn’t changed. Police officers get away with murdering people because their badges protect them. At the end of the day, it’s our word against theirs.  America has always stereotyped Blacks as criminals, so if there is no one around to witness the murders cops will get away with the brutality of African-Americans. There have been frequent videos of police wrongfully killing unarmed Black people and they still seem to get away with it. There have been a gruesome number of police killings of unarmed Black people in the past decades. According to the article, “Mapping Police Violence” on “Mapping Police Violenc.com” in 2015 alone, there was over 100 murders of unarmed Black people. This is unacceptable and it needs to change. We as Americans must figure out a way to undo all the wrongs done to African-Americans in the past and present. It is easy for America to blame African Americans for what we go through in America, but it’s not our fault its America’s fault. Connecting street crime and police with slavery is a long process but when you connect the dots they add up. After looking at the evidence, slavery is the only clear explanation for street crime. The evidence provided can no longer be over looked. It must be fixed before we find ourselves in a deeper hole than we are in currently.

Throughout American history the government has attempted to get our country out a hole but it always produce a shiny penny to mask the continuing problems. Although it looks appealing, it’s not worth much. For people at the bottom of the economic chart who are living in poverty, the government has provided the shiny penny that is welfare. According to Welfareinfo.org, the government created federally funded assistance programs in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. The Great Depression affected families financially in great numbers. Families with little to no income were the main beneficiaries of these welfare programs. Families are given money and food stamps to take care of their families. If a family has a low-income limit, these food stamps helps families save their money for other needed resources. These are all attempts to help struggling Americans. Even though this helps many poor families, it also encourages them to be dependent on the government. Blacks are the largest beneficiaries of welfare. According to “Seth Harden” in the chart “Welfare Demographics” on “Statisticbrain.com” Blacks account for most of the welfare recipients at 39.6%. It is hard to break a cycle of a dependent generation so many poor people of color find themselves in the same position as the generations before them. Depending on the government will keep those Blacks in poverty.

Every American has the right to be free and chase the American dream. This dream is to take advantage of the opportunities that our country has and work hard to achieve financial stability. For America to pride it’s self on being the greatest country in the world, we should not feel that we are slaves to our home country. It is illegal to discriminate against someone’s race, gender, and sexual orientation; therefore no one should feel oppressed in America. America is the land of opportunity and it’s up to the government to provide equal opportunity to its citizens. These shocking truths of unjust laws are showing that freedom in America depends on political views and ethnicity. It might be criticized as being un-American when people of color say they don’t feel free, but experiencing life from their perspectives might show why they question freedom in America. People of color have been living in a freedom restricted America since slavery and that needs to change. There shouldn’t be any poverty, illiteracy, or unjust laws preventing any American from receiving equal opportunity.

  1. Bilton, Nick. “Tinder, the Fast-Growing Dating App, Taps an Age-Old Truth. The New York Times. N.p., 29 Oct. 2014. Web.

Background: This article discusses the basic background behind the dating app “Tinder” and the generalizations made about  its users.

How I used it: I used this article to give an outsider’s agreement in my theory that Tinder is a hookup app, and is rarely used for romantic couplings. The author also provides a good explanation surrounding Tinder, the people who use it, as well as its role among social circles.

2.  Chamorro-Premuzic, Tomas. “The Tinder Effect: Psychology of Dating in the Technosexual Era.” The Guardian. Guardian News and Media, 17 Jan. 2014. Web.

Background: This article also takes a look at the social aspect of Tinder within a newspaper, however the author often credited our “technosexual era” to the success of the app.

How I used it: I really liked how the author used the internet and technology as a major focus in their discussion about Tinder. This editorial really helped to formulate my theory surrounding Tinder, because no one else really looked at the way Tinder fits in with social media.

  1. Grom, Emily E. “Love Me Tinder or Mis-Match.com: Free versus Paid Online Dating Sites.Digital Commons @ Winthrop University. N.p., 22 Apr. 2016. Web.

Background: Emily Grom (and others) conducted a study surrounding the desires and expectations of users of dating services. Their hypothesis focused primarily on the difference between paid and free dating services.

How I used it: I wanted to include factual data, I kept saying how users of Tinder were young adults and that they typically did not want long, monogamous relationships. This study helped to provide concrete evidence of my own hypotheses.

  1. Farvid, Pantea, and Virginia Baum. “Casual Sex as ‘not a Natural Act’ and  Other Regimes of Truth about Heterosexuality.Sage Journals. Feminism & Psychology, 18 Apr. 2013. Web.

Background: This paper focuses primarily on casual sex and its role in heterosexual relationships. It also delves into the societal emphasis put on monogamous relationships.

How I used it: I thought it would be interesting to discuss how society favors monogamy over open and casual relationships. This essay provided academic level insight on the topic. It also discusses the intricacies of casual relationships. I was able to use this essay for it’s academic integrity to discuss a topic that might very well be the topic of a Cosmopolitan Magazine article (which I do not believe to be a reliable source).

      5. Garcia, Justin R., Chris Reiber, Sean G. Massey, and Ann M. Merriwether. “Sexual Hookup Culture: A Review.Review of General Psychology : Journal of Division 1, of the American Psychological Association. U.S. National Library of Medicine, 01 June 2012. Web. 06 Nov. 2016.

Background: This essay also discusses casual relationships, but often refers to them as “hookups”. It covers topics including hookup remorse, the prevalence of drugs and alcohol, and the perceived benefits of uncommitted sex.

How I used it: While this essay covers many topics revolving around “hookups” I really liked the dialogue surrounding its transition to normalcy. My entire Causal Essay is about how women are experiencing less pressure to be in monogamous relationships, and a professional essay discussing the increasing frequency of uncommitted sex was perfect to help prove my theory.

  1. Limpus, Laurel. “Liberation of Women: Sexual Repression and the Family.Laurel Limpus-Liberation of Women. N.p., Aug. 2002. Web.

Background: Laurel Limpus goes into detail about female sexual repression and woman’s role within the family dynamic. She makes mentions towards sexual desires and society’s expectations of women.

How I used it: I wanted to show how society is the reason why women are afraid to branch out of typical monogamous relationships. I wanted to make sure that in my essay it was clear the reason for women’s sexual repression is a result of society, which will be remedied by society’s participation in online activity.

  1. Jackson, Stevi, and Sue Scott. “The Personal Is Still Political: Heterosexuality, Feminism, and Monogamy.Sage Journals. N.p., Feb. 2004. Web.

Background: This essay covers the idea that monogamy can be limiting and oppressive to women (at times). It really goes into detail surrounding society’s views and expectations of women in monogamous and non-monogamous relationships.

How I used it: I wanted to open up my readers minds to the idea that the tried and true monogamy shouldn’t be the only relationship to strive for. Many people feel as though they are put in a box that is restrictive and inflexible to their wants and needs, and are afraid of non-monogamy, strictly because of societal expectations.

  1. Haythornthwaite, Caroline. “Social Networks and Internet Connectivity Effects.” N.p., June 2005. Web. Background: This article discusses the beneficial aspects of the connectivity of the internet. It goes into detail about the types of relationships and bonds people develop through the internet.

How I used it:Since one of the integral points of my essay is that the internet brings people together for positive discussions about sex, including this in my essay was important. I had to show how the internet connects people, in order to explain how those connections lead to conversations and expansion of ideas.

  1. Armstrong, Elizabeth A., Laura T. Hamilton, ELizabeth M. Armstrong, and J. Lotus Seeley. “‘‘Good Girls’’: Gender, Social Class, and Slut Discourse on Campus.Sage Journals. American Sociological Association, 2014. Web.

Background: This article discussed women v. women slut shaming, and why it is damaging, especially, to young girls. It also discusses class differentiation, race divides, and other causal aspects of slut shaming.

How I used it: I used this article within my essay to show the scrutiny that girls face over sex and the relatively carefree attitude that boys get to have. Discussing the factors that lead to female sexual oppression was important for thesis.

  1. Webb, Lewis Mark. “Shame Transfigured: Slut-shaming from Rome to Cyberspace | Webb | First Monday.Shame Transfigured: Slut-shaming from Rome to Cyberspace | Webb | First Monday. N.p., 6 Apr. 2015. Web.

Background: This journal piece juxtaposes historical slut-shaming with modern day internet harassment. It looks at the similar themes in the shaming, but focuses on how the internet’s no-holds-barred attitude has exasperated the harmful effects of slut-shaming on women.

How I used it: I wanted to convey that slut-shaming is not a new topic, and go over how the internet can give power to slut shamers, this journal piece covers those perfectly. The author’s words helped to give me ideas on where to take my argument.

  2. POV India. “”Women, Sexuality and the Internet.” .” Point of View, 26 Mar. 2013. Web.

Background: This blog post lightly touches on the idea of using the internet to connect women, who can then communicate and share stories and advice. However, it focuses on Indian women across the globe who use services of the internet to keep themselves from feeling so isolated and alone in their issues.

How I used it: My essay discusses the internet and its ability to bring women together, which is one of the themes of this essay. I was able to use a quote to show an actual example of women using the internet for this purpose.

Reflective—Tiggs18

Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

When writing, I think that discovery of new topics and development of new ideas is where I strive the most. I find it that in this class, I was challenged more than usual to perform my top writing at all times and I liked the battle I had with myself. To narrow one point down, we look at the research topic of my own which consisted of baseball players and the injuries they encounter.  Being a baseball player myself and looking up new material, I came across many appealing news that surprised me.  By doing that, I was able learn more myself which enabled me to make the reader interested and want to keep reading.  It is very important to keep the reader hooked. Being an observer myself on others writings, I know that there are sometimes in which you do not want to keep reading because nothing interests you.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

While doing my research topic, I got a good idea of how to do this. It was very important to add more then one source and bring together peoples ideas to form one stronger point. From doing this, the reader can understand it more because more people are saying the same thing which always helps. Honestly, when writing, I have to say that citing and bringing sources to my papers was always my hardest deficit but from this class I learned quickly how to change that. Having people from different communities come together and all agree on one thing is always huge in every situation. More or less, it is like saying a team full of best friends is unbeatable and compound a stronger bound which in a sense, is the same as people coming together to all have the same conclusion maybe with different premises.

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

One of the biggest things I got out of this class was that you have to entertain the audience. No one is going to continue to read something they are not forced to if it does not interest them. So from all the work and learning this, I was able to come up with better material in which I can make the audience more involved and want to continue to read my pieces. Visual arguments was actually my favorite part of this class for a few reasons. One, everyone likes seeing pictures because it seems easier. Two, you get a short story about something important and you retain some knowledge from it. Pausing the video throughout the whole piece so describe scenes is a good way to keep yourself guessing. There is so much detail that one wouldn’t think is actually there but in reality, there is so much more then you can see at first glance. I think from looking at these and studying them to write about, I won’t look at another video, movie or program the same ever again which opens up a whole new way to view things in life.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I think that I have the expectations to the best of my abilities. Being in this class really helped me learn how to actually write. I enjoyed learning what writing really is about because I did not get this in any other class that i have been in over all my schooling. When evaluating others papers and my own to rewrite, I come across mistakes more then I would have before this class. I can see more grammar issues and sometimes there are words I use and maybe even full sentences I use that don’t need to be there at all and give no information to the reader. With incorporating illustrations, I think I’ve learned how to do this is a much better manner. This was always my favorite part about writing because when I write, I visualize it happening in my head and I can understand what the reader is thinking and seeing at the same time so it inspires me to write even better so the bigger picture is there for them.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

Coming into this class, having had some trouble with bringing sources into my own information, I think I learned a lot on how to properly do so to a large extent. Having appropriate citation is a huge concept in writing that needs to be performed to excellence. I say this because with any mistakes or if no citations at all, how could it be good work? If we are basing it off a argument with none of these, then we are looking at our own opinions and that is something that not everyone will want to believe especially when they have there own. From learning how to properly cite after all the time that I have been in school, I come to see how much better my own writing is and also, I can stay away from mistaken case of plagiarism.
