Certainly by now other writers have spent hundreds of thousands of words suggesting ways to reduce gun violence. Your job is to choose a thesis small enough to do justice in a short paper.

Let’s distill that statement into a thesis: To reduce gun violence, we should restrict the legal purchase of guns.
That still leaves lots of room to narrow your argument further.

I applaud your decision to use your personal experience as part of your argument, but you should consider that an opportunity to NARROW your argument to the particulars of your own family’s case. What restrictions that you plan to demand would have kept a gun out of the hands of the perpetrator(s) in your personal case study? You may need to speculate unless you’re very familiar with the facts of the case, but you could be very persuasive if you know enough about it to draw a clear cause-and-effect demonstration.
