Junk Food is 21st Century Imperialism

1. It seems counterintuitive that billon dollar companies such as McDonalds, Pepsi and other are tasteful and are very assessable but these companies cause many health risk and obesity. Reports show that these companies are now working on healthier ingredient to include into recipes and menus. In Brazil many cultural food places are being replaced with european cultural food places. The European food places are not what the Brazil people are use to and are unhealthy, they feel as the they are bring ripped away from their culture. The European food culture includes things like Coke and Kit-Kit and pudding.

2. It seems counterintuitive that some say the $28 billon supplement and vitamin industry the vitamins we are taking have no nutritional value to them at all and no evidence that they make us healthier. We should eat more of green leaf foods, and foods that contain these vitamins in them to receive vitamins, instead of taking a pill supplement.

3. It seems counterintuitive that many items in Walmart’s vegetable section items are listed as organic but may only say grown in the USA as customers read closer into the label. This is misleading to their customers and causes controversy. In 2000 all Walmart’s argued to get produce from local grown farms near by the stores. Very few Walmart’s have started to connect with local farms and is now receiving fresher grown items but many have not done so yet.

  1. Hey, PDQ! Let’s take a look at your Counterintuitive arguments.

    1. It seems counterintuitive that billon dollar companies such as McDonalds, Pepsi and other are tasteful and are very assessable but these companies cause many health risk and obesity.

I don’t see the counterintuitivity here, PDQ. A good example of counterintuitivity would be “SaladWorks, a restaurant that PROMOTES ITSELF AS A HEALTHY ALTERNATIVE to fast food burger chains, is actually LESS HEALTHY than MacDonalds and Burger King.”

The rest of your paragraph makes the reasonable observation that local cuisine is often pushed aside by cheaper “imported” alternatives that are both unfamiliar and less healthy. Why would local residents abandon their familiar foods for unhealthy alternatives? That’s a question worth asking, an argument worth making, and has the components of a counterintuitive claim.

    2. It seems counterintuitive that some say the $28 billon supplement and vitamin industry the vitamins we are taking have no nutritional value to them at all and no evidence that they make us healthier.

Well, sort of. It certainly seems counterintuitive that Americans spend $28 billion a year on something worthless. But it’s not clear you’re making that point. When you say “some say,” you appear to be casting doubt on your own claim. Every argument fails if its premise is unclear.

This is even more unclear, PDQ. I’m going to rephrase the claims below to clarify. I may not get your ideas right, but I will state them as clearly as I can.

It seems counterintuitive that Walmart vegetable section items are organic but not locally grown. Customers have to decide between locally grown foods, or organically grown foods, or organics grown in the US but not necessarily locally. In 2000 Walmart declared its mission to sell produce from local farms, but very few store have done so.

For the purposes of this assignment, it’s more important that you be able to build your own persuasive arguments in just a paragraph or two. If you want to revise for another round of feedback, I’d be happy to look at it again. Just be sure to let me know you’ve made revisions.
