Visual Rhetoric – theintern

0:00-A woman and a man are in an office in a building. You can tell they are in a building because you can see the top of trees which means the office must be on a higher floor level. The office is like an ordinary office theres cubes in the center with executive offices surrounding them. In the office there windows sills to look outside and the lobby where the cubes are located. The man is a white older man who is wears glasses and seems like he is one of the executive offices with a black woman which seems like they are about to shake hands, he wears a nice light charcoal suit with a baby blue buttoned down dress shirt with no tie, meaning that he is dressing business casual. His office has a plant inside with a desk that has a paperweight and pencil holders and some sort of certificate hanging from the wall. The black woman is there for her interview with the man she is reaching out to shake his hand. She wears a black suit with a black appropriate skirt. Later the man asks her to sit with is hand gesturing. There is a man outside of the executive office in one of the cubes holding a phone to his ear perhaps talking to a client while looking at his desktop but he is blurred out. There seems to be another cube in front of him but we can not see who is there.

0:01- They are both sitting and the camera is angled from the woman’s right shoulder and faced to the man. The man looks amazed but also having a curious look on his face. The man looks like early or mid fifties with his lips puckered up a bit. His hair is receding a bit where it looks like he has a bigger forehead. His eyes are green.

0:02- The camera is again outside the office and near the cubes now we can see the woman better she wears a light orange buttoned down dress shirt and by the looks of her face it looks like she is waiting to answer a question from the man who is looking at her with is hands up and crossed in front of him near his face. The man seems like he is getting a better observation of her and at the same time asking her a few questions. As the interview is going on everyone outside his office are working the man with the phone is still there but there is one man walking by the office almost blocking the man, he is also blurred out a bit. As the second keeps going he is talking to her.

0:03-  Now the camera is angled on the man’s left shoulder facing the woman’s face. She looks puzzled but at the same time it looks like she is about to answer the man. The woman’s eyes are brown, she has a young face seems like she just got out of college.

0:04- She just answered a question she had for the man with a smile on her face. She is now waiting for his answer and hopes the answer she gave was good enough.

0:05- The camera switched back to where the cubes are located and is looking through the window sills of the executive office.

0:06-0:08 – The camera is up in her face, we can see her mouth open ready to speak with her eyes looking very concerned. Now I see that on her left her she has an earring.

0:09- Now the camera is angled on her shoulder facing him, he is looking down either at her resume, desk, or a gesture of disappointment who knows. His face has changed a bit, now he has a more serious face and left wondering from her answer.

0:10- He is now beginning to talk while leaning back in his chair but still looking downward with no eye contact.

0:11- He has a serious look on his face once he asks her a question but his face is more rude than serious like there is something bothering him.

0:12-0:16- The camera turns from him quickly to her from his left shoulder to her face and she begins to answer to him but her face expression is sharp, confident she knows what she wants.

0:17- Quickly turned for a close up on the man who listened very closely to her answer but is now thinking of a question to ask her again.

0:18-0:20- The camera faces the man and he looks her straight in the eyes and is slightly smiling but questioning whether or not to hire her and then gives his final thoughts.

0:21- The camera is right outside the window sill looking at her. She looks like she is about to get up. The office has more detail he has a dial up phone on his desk. Near the the widows to look outside he has a shelve with books lined up together.

0:22- The woman stands up and reaches out to shake the man’s hand which is usually the conclusion of an interview.

0:23- The camera is near the widow sill to look into his office and you see the man holding out his hand to shake the woman’s hand but then we realize she is not there and there is no one in front of him just his chairs.

0:24-0:25 – The camera focuses on him with his puzzled and concerned face looking beyond his desk. He looks worried and sad.

0:26-0:27 – The camera is angled from his left shoulder and is looking facing his chair there is no one sitting in it, it’s empty and facing him as well.

0:28-0:30 – The commercial ends and you see the man faded and looking downwards with white words in the middle of the screen reading “GRADS of LIFE. org” and Ad council copyright on the screen to the bottom right.

Visual Rhetoric- Splash305

The video I have chosen is called Never Here by Project Yellow Light and it is 35 seconds long.

0:00- In this image there is a boy sitting looking at his phone on a tan, new looking leather couch, it seems to be his house. It seems that way because in the corner of the room I see a photo of was seems to be a husband and wife.  There is a fleece blanket bunched up next to him which gives off the feeling of comfort in one’s own home. He is wearing a black sweater and gray sweat pants so it might be the winter time. There is a glass door in the corner of the room and you can see what looks like a shed of some sort.

0:02- The same boy has switched places, still on his phone but now in a library. Wearing a different blue sweater but I cannot see his pants. He is sitting at a desk in the library with books around him but he is not reading them. The boy seems more interested in his phone rather than all the books around him. It doesn’t look like he in in a school library because all the books look to be covered in laminate, like they do in public libraries.

0:03- The boy has moved places again, this time to a gym. He is still on his phone and looks like he is doing sit-ups. He is now wearing a white T-shirt with a yellow sweat band around his head, and a watch around his wrist. Around him are free weights like a squat rack and a bench press but no people. The expression on his face hasn’t changed in any of the scenes, he keeps the same one. He looks like he doesn’t care what is happening around him and all he’s worried about is what’s on his phone.

0:04- Now the boy has moved into what looks like a mall cafeteria, and is still on his phone. He is not worried about the people around him nor does he look like he is socializing with them. He is sitting next to another boy in a red hoodie who appears to be eating maybe talking with friends. He is wearing a gray long sleeved shirt with a T-shirt underneath. There are strangers around him eating and talking at other tables and he seems to be the only one distracted by his phone.

0:05- The boy looks like he is at a party, maybe his birthday party because there is a cupcake right in front of him with a candle in it that is lit. He is sitting on his phone not paying attention to the cupcake or the people around him. The people around him are all standing around him at the table, one looks to be clapping and others smiling having a good time. He is wearing a nicer white blue stripped sweater and only interested in his phone.

0:06- The boy is alone on a carousel sitting on a horse while on his phone. His expression is still the same and there is nobody around him. He is now wearing a cream long sleeved shirt with a T-shirt underneath. He doesn’t seem to be bothered that he is alone because he has his phone.

0:07- The scene has changed to him with a girl sitting on a couch that looks fabric, maybe at her house because he had a leather couch. She has her arm on his shoulder trying to talk to him but he is only paying attention to his phone. Maybe she is his girlfriend and she is trying to get his attention but he doesn’t care, maybe she’s even upset that he isn’t paying attention to her. He is wearing the same sweater he wore in the scene at his birthday party. There are a lot cactuses behind them so maybe the girl’s parents are really into nature.

0:08- The boy is back in his house so it seems and he has his phone in his hand, the camera shot is being taken from inside the fridge and he is closing the door.

0:09- He is now laying in his bed and is underneath the covers but still on his phone. He looks like he is hiding so maybe he’s supposed to be asleep but he’d rather play on his phone.

0:09- The scene has switched to another house, maybe his friend’s house and he is standing on one side of the ping pong table. It looks like he is trying to film his friends playing ping pong. He is wearing a T-shirt and sweat pants, so maybe that represents that the season is changing. His facial expression has still not changed.

0:10- This scene he is on an escalator that looks like it could be in a mall and is seems to be going upward. There are no people around and he is still on his phone. He is wearing a worn out red hat and a puffy blue winter jacket. In the background, the lights in the mall seem to be out so maybe the mall is closed.

0:11- Now it looks like he is at a party with people all around. The room is dark but lights are flashing and people are having a good time but he is on his phone paying no attention to them.

0:12- He is back laying in his bed laying on his side with the covers pulled over his head, still on his phone. There is a window next to his bed and the blinds are closed but there is light shining through so it is still daylight outside. But he is sitting in the dark alone in his room.

0:15- The scenes that I have stated above where all played again multiple times in a very fast pace.

0:16- He is now sitting in a car on the drivers sit with his phone in his hands. The car seems to be in park and he does not have his seatbelt on, and he is in the car alone.

0:17- The boy put his phone down and it is showing us the conversation between him and someone else. He told the other person he was driving now so he would talk to them later.

0:21- He started the car and is showed him driving away and words popped up on the screen that read “Not Here, Never Here.”

0:23- Next is showed the car continuing to drive away and another caption came up that said “Don’t Text and Drive” and then the ad was over.

Visual Rhetoric Rewrite-LifeisSublime

The video I have decided to analyze is a 35 second video called Saved by the Scan.

0:00- The image is of  woman who is climbing a mountain. It seems to be cold where she is because she is wearing a jacket and boots from this point of view. The mountain has grass and dirty but the color is almost gray, giving off that cold feeling. The woman is alone, climbing this mountain with no safety precautions at all. In the background are more mountains.

0:01- In the first second she is moving up the mountain. Seeming to struggle slightly. There is fog around her. Not much as changed.

0:02- In this time the video is zoomed in on the woman, but her face is blocked by her arm, leaving room for interpretation on her emotional state. She is looking down, at her footing I assume. Her jacket isn’t really a winter coat but a light jean jacket. She has bracelets on her arm and her hair is red.

0:03- The woman is now looking up. She seems to be looking at where ever it is she is climbing towards. Her facial expression is hard to read. The way I’m taking her facial expression is she is tired of the climb.

0:04- The perceptive of the camera changes and now we are looking at the woman from down the mountain. She is not climbing on grass and dirt, but on a mountain of cigarettes. The fog is now clearly smoke. The woman is still struggling up the hill.

0:05- The woman is still climbing the cigarette filled mountain side. She looks up a little bit but we can not see her whole face just yet.

0:06- In this second, the camera zooms in on her hand (or many her foot) that is pushing through all these cigarette. The odd thing is that most of these cigarettes are full cigarettes, not all just cigarette butts. She is pushing through them.

0:07- In this second I find out that is was her foot in the previous second. The pile of cigarettes that she stepped on falls down the mountain as she continues to climb.

0:08- The mountain is now getting steeper. The cigarettes are falling all around her and it seems hard to keep her footing. Smoke is still rising from the mountain, as she tries to hold on and push her way up.

0:09- In this second the woman puts her foot up on a ledge on the mountain in order to go up.

0:10-  The camera focuses on her hand now as she digs it into the side of the cigarette mountain. The cigarettes are sticking out of dirty.

0:11- In this second we can see the other arm/hand planting into the side of the mountain in the background of the first. Moving up.

0:12- The camera is now on her face again. She seems tired and looks as though she is working very hard to get to the top of this mountain.

0:13- This second is almost the same as the last, expect the woman has turned her head to look more at what is in front of her rather than what is up head. I would assume she is looking where to put her hand this time.

0:14- The camera shifts again, and now we are looking at the woman from underneath her. We can see the direction in which she is climbing in, but not a destination. The mountain seems even more steep as last time.

0:15- This second is similar to the last. The woman has moved her leg up to keep climbing.

0:16- In this second the woman is now at the top of the mountain. She slowly is standing up to make the last couple of steps up the mountain. There is nothing at the top.

0:17-  This second is the same as the last. The woman making her final step to reach the very top of the mountain made of cigarettes.

0:18- Now the camera is zoomed in on her face. She seems to realize she is at the top but doesn’t have an expression showing if she is happy or sad. Again she looks tired. In the upper left corner there is a box of text that reads “You stopped smoking”.

0:19- The woman looks more over to her right, as if looking at the view. The text extends to now read in full, “You stopped smoking now start screening”. The woman seems to be content.

0:20- In this second she blinked and started to form a smile. The smile is not all the way there yet, but it looks like a smile one would make after they have accomplished something stressful.

0:21- She now smiles and looks directly at the camera as is starts to zoom out. She is standing on the center on the top of the mountain. Throughout the while video no grass was visible, expect for now it seems as though she is standing on some.

0:22- The camera continues to zoom out as the woman continues to smile. Standing tall.

0:23- The camera is still zooming out, showing the mountain a little bit more. The woman is still smiling.

0:24- Again, still zooming out, while she continues to stand on the top of this mountain smiling.

0:25- The image on the screen changes and is now what I think is a MRI machine or a Catscan machine. Words appear above it saying, “Talk to your doctor of learn more at”. In this second the other part of information is not visible yet.

0:26- The website at which to learn more at appears, savedbythescan.org. On the bottom of the image are organizations affiliated with this movement: the American Lung Association, Lung Force, and of course Ad Council.

0:27- This information stays the image for this second.

0:28- The same information is on the screen, but now it seems as though the camera is moving closer to the machine being shown.

0:29: The camera is moving closer to the machine, with the same information as before.

0:30-The video ends, advertising another video about how this one was made.

Stone Money—jonhjelly

Webster defines money as a form or denomination of coin or paper money. After reading multiple articles about the creation of money, how other countries deal with there money problems , and how people from other cultures view and use money. I changed my views on money, I’ve realized that money isn’t worth as much as I treated it as. The value has changed since I was a child, because of inflation every year the value of money goes down little by little. In the 70s a dollar could go along way and could last you a week. Today you are lucky if you could purchase a water for a dollar. Now I views money as numbers in my checking account.

The NRP broadcast 423 The Invention of Money had discussed “that money is as real as the stones on the bottom of the ocean floor.”  They claim that money is fiction, Money value can disappear it is not set in stone. Back when we were on the gold standard each dollar correspond to a dollar of gold. Ever since we got off the gold standard the value of money is fluctuated. It has not been constant since.  Currency has changed into information, numbers and commas on a computer screen. Another interesting fact is that their are not even a trillion dollar bills in the world. Their aren’t even bills for most of the money that exits according to NRP broadcast. It is sad how much power this idea of money can make people do ridiculous and foolish things.

The way the money imported  into our economy is not as you imagine it would be. When I think our economy need money, I think the Federal Reserves sends freshly printed dollars bills to some of the biggest banks in our countries. Unfortunately that is not the case, what really occurs is the Federal Reserves type of how much money they think our economy needs and they put the number into the computer and buys how much of treasury bonds from banks. Just like that Money is sent into our economy according to NRP. They literarily make money out of nothing. Without printing any new bills or anything, they just type in numbers and with a click of a button money is created.

Money journey to come into our economy is still different. The federal reserves doesn’t  print a million bills and send into our encamp. Realistically they put numbers into a screen then they send it into a bank and  exchange the bank gives them bail bonds. No new money because most of the money out there doesn’t exists out there. So like a magican they make money out of nothing. Its a magical experience for the federal reserve to make money.

As I read other articles, My eyes were opened and  I realized that money value is all in our minds. At least it was in this small Island in Micronesia a Germany colony. This people on this very small Island had huge stones as there currency. Not even gold but stones that were round like big stone wheels. Now according to Milton Friedman there was a family on the island that was very wealthy but has never sen the money. But no one on the island has never questioned them about their wealth because of their ancestor. It was known that one of their ancestors went on a search for a stone that would have valuable in their currency.  But after coming across a deadly storm they had to let the valuable stone sink all the way to the bottom of the ocean. When he returned from his travels he told all of the people on the island about what he found and what happened when they ran into the deadly storm. Ever since than the family has been wealth because of their ancestors failures.  Its crazy to think that because of their ancestor failures the family is well off, with nothing to show for it. This just makes the augment on money being fiction even stronger.

Money has evolved into a fictional thing that people of our society fight, killer, and rob each other over. Recently on the internet the bitcoin has been making moves on the world in the last year. According to Jeff Reeves “the bitcoin has no federal bank to back its value. This means that there is no true value for this, its value is whatever the person is willing to pay for it.”. Every year money value goes’s down so who is to say that the idea of money won’t be relevant in a few more decades.

Stone Money—Killroy513

Money is one of the most important things in this world.  It makes the world go round. There is many different forms of money used around the world, its value is recognized by its significance. For the Yap people their currency is made up of lime stone rocks carved into cylinders. These rocks would be decorated and customized for whoever had them made. These stones, being huge in size, would not move from its final placement. The Yap people relied on word of mouth for financial records. This is almost like today’s modern credit system. Our credit system is based on invisible money that appears electronically.

Currency can be anything, as long as it has value to whomever wants it. In the past money was made of preshes metals. Gold was the most saute after currency since it does not really loose its value. Most countries used gold to back their paper currency. The United States of America used gold to back the currency. During the Great Depression, many countries wanted to insure their assets would be secured. France being one of them, wanted to secure its credit in gold. The United States dived the French shares. Eventually this would change. The gold would not be used to back the currency’s value. This would start the modern day system of credit.

Inflation is good and bad for an economy.  To much inflation is bad because it discredits the moneys worth. Prices for everyday goods would jump. An example of this is Brazil. It had to much inflation and no one had money to buy the things they need. Eventually the currency was changed and the economy leveled out. This made it better for the Brazilian people.

In the end money is truly one of the most important things to have. It can be anything as long as it retains its value.

Stone Money—unknowntrendsetter

Many people who I have a close relationship with has told me that it is near impossible to live a comfortable life or various fun activities without having money. In my experience I can agree with that general statement. The way people view money in the world is really interesting. Especially the people who are in control of regulating it in certain areas of the world as well as people who own large amounts of currency. In general, across all economic backgrounds and social classes, place very high value on money. Currency is used to control just about everything. There’s a famous quote that i am sure that everyone has heard once or twice in their life. It’s, “Money makes the world go around”. As is to be understood, if all of the citizens in any country were to completely abandon the use of a certain currency, that form of  money would have no value. A Great example of this is as the NPR podcast discusses how in the country of Brazil, a certain currency was being devalued everyday and making people’s lives harder to survive. When Brazil wanted to build expensive buildings in the middle of the jungle, it cost a lot of money to make. So what they decided to do was to just print more money. This caused severe inflation to their country for decades and make it harder for people to purchase daily necessities like food. Many different stores completely changed their prices regularly everyday to try and put the correct value on their product so that money could be made and continue to flow. This meant that people had to constantly spend money as soon as they got it because the money was losing value daily. People pretty much completely lost faith in their country’s currency. NPR podcast used the example of the lady running in front of the price changer and picking up the product in the grocery store before it became too expensive. People really fought to make sure they got things at the lowest possible price before it was too late. Pretty soon this became very impossible to keep up with since people were losing a quality of life and the trust was lost. If I were in that position, I would have most likely done the same thing. This forced the country to come up with a brand new value system. People put their trust in the new form of currency, which was named the Brazilian Real.

When I read the story on the island and currency of Yap, I found it’s story rather interesting. Discovering how their currency was different to that of most of the world was very interesting. Hearing about the concept of the trust that the people of yap have in each other and their capital was shocking to me seeing that the country could easily go back and check to see if the money is there. In the beginning, I thought it was foolish to not get confirmation for the money to build the home, then I thought about how the banks are being run in our country and our digital currency. The majority of the people in the country gets paid a direct deposit, where you are not able to see the physical paper money in hand and doesn’t question where it is exactly, yet it is understood to be owned by you. In the United States, our earnings are supposed to be secured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or the FDIC. This corporation began under the new deal crafted by the president at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt, as a way to restore the country to its former financial and economic norm. Even before that, during the age of the international gold standard, since many Americans did not have gold, it regulated how the American dollar’s value in comparison to other countries. For example, as it has been stated in Friedman’s essay, “The Island of Stone Money”, France’s currency: the Franc, had more value than the American Dollar through gold per ounce. This happened because citizens in the United States as well as the country’s gold reserve did not have as much gold as France. The example that Friedman used in is article was The original conversion of dollars to gold at the time was $20.67 per ounce of gold. As the US did not own as much gold as other countries, the value dropped and was called in the country’s newspapers as the draining or “The Loss of Gold”.  This is what helped caused the United States’ Great Depression. Once the country loses currency/valued goods, the economy begins to shift towards a recession, and in this severe case, a depression. NPR talks about Ben Bernanke’s role at the Federal Reserve. Bernanke works at the national bank called the Federal Reserve. In times of “economic limbo”, the government will try to work with the reserve as well as various other banks around the country to regulate the economy, spending and so on. The banks will usually lend money to the reserve from a special bond that has been held for years, as revealed by NPR’s podcast on the subject. This could sometimes be dangerous since if it is too little, nothing will change in the economy. If it is too much, there will be a certain amount of inflation the country might receive, which the value of the dollar will decrease.

In my opinion, there aren’t that many differences in the basic structures of the banking system comparing Yap to that of the United States. Both countries basic structures rely on some form of trust in another person or people that money is in fact owned by someone else and can be used at anytime, with or without being physically moved anywhere else. The only difference is that the Yap currency has to be made and counted for. In the US, there are not enough physical paper money to match the amount of electronic money that is being made daily. Most people just check their online bank account to see if the money is there.

In conclusion, After viewing all of the sources provided, it has not weakened my thoughts towards money, but the exact opposite has happened. In order for money to help others everyday, it needs to be valued highly so everyone can work towards having a certain standard of living.
