E03: Critical Reading – Tiggs18

“Sometimes I can’t do the laundry,” Brannan explains, reclining on her couch. “And it’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m too tired to do the laundry,’ it’s like, ‘Um, I don’t understand how to turn the washing machine on.’ I am looking at a washing machine and a pile of laundry and my brain is literally overwhelmed by trying to figure out how to reconcile them.”

  • seems as if she can not control her thoughts or focus on doing any one thing because of what we can imagine would be some type of stress disorder
  • basic things that everyone does can not be performed

The Army has rules about that sort of thing now. Now if you’re knocked unconscious, or have double vision, or exhibit other signs of a brain injury, you have to rest for a certain period of time, but that rule didn’t go into effect in theater until 2010, after Caleb was already out of the service.

  • a rule was put in finally which should have happened awhile ago
  • these injuries seem like something you don’t think are bad but in reality are worse then some bigger injuries can be
  • trauma is a real thing that affects people in serious ways and to keep them out there after an injury is shameful
  • time finally came where they want to make sure people are alright

“I guess we’re just used to dealing with people with more severe injuries,” a VA nurse once told Brannan upon seeing Caleb.”

  • this goes to show that nurses can not see the ptsd at first like they can see other injuries in which are seeable from the eye
  • sometimes it seems from this as if the nurses don’t really know how to deal with trauma like this

Her schoolmate said something mean. Maybe. Katie doesn’t sound sure, or like she remembers exactly. One thing she’s positive of: “She just made me…so. MAD.” Brannan asks Katie to name some of the alternatives. “Walk away, get the teacher, yes ma’am, no ma’am,” Katie dutifully responds to the prompts. She looks disappointed in herself.

  • she goes to school
  • doesn’t seem to be able to understand the tone in peoples voice
  • has her own emotions and not certain with others so is confused when someone doesn’t sound like herself

In cases where children themselves need treatment, these VA officials recommended that parents find psychologists themselves, though they note “this is a good time [for the VA] to make partners with the community so we can make good referrals.” Or basically: “You’re on your own,” says Brannan.

  • seems as if the kids who seem to have signs are not being taken in because they are not actually on duty
  • they only help active on duty people that show signs

Polio- tiggs18

  • Polio goes in the mouth and live in the intestines
  • Kids are more vulnerable because they lack hygiene
  • used to be a global problem where 1000 kids a day were diagnosed
  • 1980s – inexpensive vaccines have made possible to eradicate the virus to 98% of the world
  • only lives in humans, once we eradicate for a minute, gone forever
  • desire for people to help every child, which does not happen during war times
  • couple of hundred cases a year, making us that close to getting rid of polio
  • nigeria rumor spread on radio and tv that vaccine contained pork and that muslims couldn’t take it
  • cia agents used the polio virus as an excuse to find Osama  so the town will think we are lying if we go there and try to cure everyone with polio
  • sometimes vaccine has to be done 3 times to create a immunity that will last for life
  • Immunity needs to be at 90% and not 100%
  • In india we are at 9-10 cases a year which means we are that close

Practice Opening

Polio, a virus just like measles, has a way of dying off completely but we will never reach that time.  The problem with the vaccines are that one is dead in which we use in the United States, but in other less advanced countries with no money have a live one in which can still give a kid the virus with slim chance.  We can get them the dead vaccine but that comes with a high price in which we do not have for other countries.  So the only way to get rid of it as a whole is if all the countries come together which will not happen.  So sad to say, it will always be out there affecting people just because we are all to lazy and will not come together.

Safer Saws- Tiggs18

1a)  If Table Saws Can Be Safer, Why Aren’t They?

1b) Table saws are dangerous, they can be safer,  they should be, we need to make them safer if they are capable.

1c) This is a proposal claim.  The author is giving an opinion in which many others would agree with.

1d) The claims being made in the first sentence are very substantial.  Table saws are very dangerous and there is accidents that happen all the time in which can be stopped by a SawStop creation.  The quality behind this claim just makes real sense.  We know when watching the videos and also reading on the technology that injuries can be stopped, but companies do not wish to pay for this which makes no real sense.

1e) I do not disagree with this claim because it makes sense in all the right ways.  If table saws are dangerous, and can be improved to make them safer, they should be.

2a) “I’ve tried to be fair, but the more I hear about SawStop and Stephen Gass, the more of a bully and a jerk they seem to be.”

2b) Unanimous voice who said this quote seems to think that because Gass is seeing for the rights, that it makes him a jerk for some reason.  Clearly this isn’t the first time that it has came up.

2c) Opinionated claim.  This is what this person thinks but obviously does not mean he is a jerk to e everyone.

2d) I think that this can be a persuasive claim if anything because they can make other people think the same about Gass.  Other then it being persuasive, i do not think it is good quality because it is just a hate quote.

2e) I do refute this claim.  The idea of the flesh detecting mechanism is his own and no one should be able to create the same thing and just give it a different name.  Gas should have the right to sue and it does not make him a jerk just because he is pissed about some companies stealing his idea.

3a) “Safety doesn’t sell”

3b) Basically exactly what the quote says, explains the quote.  The product which produces safety just does not sell to bigger companies.

3c) This is a proposal claim because it makes a suggestion that the safety machine does not sell.  It is not factual because it is not true in all aspects.

3d) This claim is both accurate and reasonable because it is true in a sense of the bigger businesses not wanting to buy his idea which can save so many injuries that happen so often.  It doesn’t make much sense that they do not want to buy his safety product.  It is proven that table saws cut off around 4000 fingers per year and by his idea, this number can be lowered to so few.

3e) I agree with this claim.  It is true.  The companies don’t want to spend money on him but they will make their own and name it something else.  It doesn’t make sense.

4a) Table saws cause tens of thousands of serious injuries every year, costing billions of dollars.

4b) This claim means that because of the injuries that happen from table saws, there are lots of dollars spent in helping people recover and hospital bills.

4c) This is a factual claim.  There are not many that can be factual but this one provides evidence for it.  It is clear that table saws do make injuries more common and they happen a lot and obviously money has to be spent for bills at the doctors or hospitals.

4d) This claim is very accurate for its own reasons.  It is obvious what this claim means and there is no real way to argue against it because it obviously does cost money for bills for injuries and its proven and numbers have been taken on how many injuries happen per year from them.

4e) I agree with this claim.  There is no reason to disagree with the claim because it is obviously true and factual.

5a) “No offense, but I don’t think this is a move by Bosch (or any other tool manufacturer for that matter) to prevent safety devices, but simply a move to prevent the unintended consequences of adding mandatory safety devices that would, in some instances, double the price of entry level power saws.”

5b) This claim is trying to say that whomever is saying this statement, thinks that the big companies are not the ones who are saying no to the saw stop idea and paying Gass for it but because it will raise the chance of companies having to make mandatory decisions to put it on every saw which will raise the price of making them.

5c) This is someones opinion.  This is just someone saying what they think the hold on paying Gass is about.

5d) I think this person knows what they are talking about but in  a say we actually do not know exactly what the real reasons are.  The claim they make is ideal and still does sound like it could be a legit reason.

5e)  I agree with this claim in a way because it could be one of the reasons that this is actually happening.

6a) “Injured Man Says Bosch Tool Lobbied Feds to Keep Safer Power Saws off the Market”

6b) Claim states that a man who was injured by most likely a Bosch Tool, says that the company told federals to not let power saws get any safer.  This is a huge problem because if the company told these people to not change anything, then there is something behind the fact that they would most likely lose money.

6c) This is a Proposal claim because the man might not be telling the truth but there is no facts behind if its true.  And its not opinionated because that is not the right type of argument.

6d) Seems like this is more persuasive because this person is trying to get others to turn on the company.  It sounds like something that could happen but also not sure if companies would do something like this knowing that people are being injured all the time.

6e) Not really a chance to disagree with it because its not someones opinion and its something that someone said a company did.

7a) “Pretty amazing that I only had to put on a band-aid. The saw reacted so quickly that I didn’t even know what had happened. Saved my thumb from a serious injury and saved my company lots of money.”

7b)  Claim made of a comment from someone that could have got hurt but because of a saw incident but because of SawStop technology, he had nothing other then a cut on his finger.

7c) Proposal claim.  This person is making a suggestion that the SawStop saved him from losing a finger or having a bad injury.

7d) This is a very well said quote.  It is very obvious that the SawStop technology can save people from injury and this is a man that says to a point that it has actually happened to him and his hand is saved because of it.  I think the quality of this claim is good because it goes to show people how this saw really helps.

7e) I agree to what i can with this claim.  Its not something much that that one can agree with but by reading it, i can see that this product really is a big help.

8a) “Seems to be the best saw I have ever owned!”

8b) This is probably one of the strongest claims that you can find.  Its made of a straight opinion that says that this person is very strong of the saw.

8c) Opinionated claim.  This is someones claim or statement that they think this saw is obviously the greatest one they’ve ever used.

8d) Nothing much about this claim other then it being straight up with no reasons why this person believes this but them just saying this because of usage and that is most likely it.

8e) Not sure i agree with this claim because I’ve never used the saw but i can’t not agree with it because it does seem as if it could have some potential to be one of the best.

0:00  Seems to be many houses in which were involved in some type of flood.  Houses that look like they are crowded next to each other in some type of small neighborhood sit in high waters with no bodies to be encountered for.

0:03-0:06 Camera changes to a house that has water almost up to the front door with a man sitting on a chair on the porch.  It seems that he is trying to think  to himself with tragic thoughts about what he is looking at.  Something like this and how tragic that it is could ruin someones entire life so i couldn’t imagine how bad this man must be feeling about his future.

0:06-0:08 New shot of the back window of a car where there are two children looking out in some type of fear.  It seems the car is dredging through water.  In a sense, these kids could seem to be looking for someone who is helping and seeing what is really going on and how bad everyone has it.

0:08-0:10 Camera changes to what looks to be a flooded area in which some people are being push in little boats to try to stay dry.  The words on the screen make it look as if some people got on their boats to go safe others stranded.

0:11 People on boats in the high water seem to al be heading in the same direction most likely leading to go help others.  People like these are great people because they are giving themselves out to help others in these tough times.

0:12-0:13 A man stands in the high water with a vest on.  Flooded houses in the background with a mailbox showing how high the water is.  Clearly they have the man looking down in a sense that he is feeling really bad for everyone and realizing how tragic these times actually are.

0:14 A man stands in which looks to be a flooded street down at a vehicle coming his way which you can see is fighting through the water.  This car coming could be someone coming to help the man on the phone because something could have went wrong in his house, or houses around.

0:15-0:16 People pointing most likely standing in some type of boat.  A car and houses in the background in which the car is almost completely submerged show to brutal conditions.  The words “saving people” is written across the screen meaning that they are a bunch of people trying to help everyone else out.

0:17 A man seems to be pulling an older man and a younger kid through the water to keep them dry.  Once again, the words saving people is written across the screen which could be meaning that this man is pulling them to safety.

0:18-0:19 A boat full of dogs seem to being pulled by a string to keep them out of the water to not drown.  Saving pets is on the screen so it seems that they are all trying to help the pets get to safety so everyone has a pet still.

0:19-0:20 A dog is being carried by somebody to keep them out of water.  The look on the dogs face shows how sad it really is.  To see a dog in this despair shows how hard these times really are for everyone.

0:20-0:23 A lady stand in what looks to be her living room where it is completely flooded.  Looks to be a dresser in which the draws are out and everything looks damaged.  Its only the beginning on the screen means that this is not the worst of what its coming.  They have to deal with so many problems after this.

0:23-0:28 Looks to be a truck filled with giant bags in which could be care packages.  The words on the screen seem to tell the viewer that those bags are heading over there to help.

0:30 Two children sit on what looks to be a porch where they are holding each other in some type of joy.  Maybe at the end of it all, the bags were sent and in somehow things being to be fixed.

E04: Open Strong

Imagine a surgery that not only recovers an athlete back to normal selves, but amplifies there game at the same time.  Tommy John surgery, the most common operation in baseball today.  A ligament in your elbow that holds the forearm bones to the upper arm bones is replaced with the tendon in your wrist and intertwined through holes made in the ends of each bone.  We may have hear different things about it, but really don’t know the facts behind it.  A 10-12 month full recovery process can really make a pitcher gain speed and have a stronger arm then they ever did before.  We might even realize, pitchers should have this done before even getting hurt in the first place.  That is the thought that will make you think about how much of a plus this extraordinary surgery really is.

Missing Dollar-tiggs18

In the missing dollar paradox, the three ladies actually only paid $25.  From the number $25 which is the new bill, you add the two that the waiter took and then also add the three dollars that were given back.  By doing this, you get 30 all together which was originally put out.  This is meant to mess with your head in a way that it shouldn’t.  Since the the new bill is $25, its almost like having a new problem and you can not think about the money the ladies gave out first.

A05:Purposal-tiggs18

For my research, i will be looking at the rapid increase of baseball pitchers needing to get elbow surgery because of young bad habits.  This surgery is called Tommy John and was named this after the first MLB pitcher that got hurt.  Tommy John surgery is when the UCL tears and is replaced with a ligament not needed somewhere else in the body.  Many athletes get this surgery but is most common among baseball players.

When researching more about the topic, i found out that this is rising because of kids throwing more curveballs at a younger age causes more stress on the elbow and leads to the injury faster.  The thing about curveballs being thrown is that it twists your full arm and puts a lot of strain on that ligament at all times.  Playing as a little kid, coaches need to know that it is about more fun then competing and kids can’t hit to perfection any how so there should be no chance of the kids throwing curveballs at the age.

1:  The Tommy John Epidemic

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/tommy-john-epidemic-elbow-surgery-glenn-fleisig-yu-darvish/

The Essential Content of the Article: This article shows how fast the rate is going up in which baseball pitchers are needing to get this surgery.  Just alone in 2014, there were more surgeries then in all of the 90s.

What it Proves: It proves that the rate is going up and the surgery is becoming more common to pitchers.  It also shows there can be ways to avoid getting an arm injury this serious from studies done through different organizations.  These studies have been done from levels of little league all the way to the pros.

2: Young Arms and Curveballs: A Scientific Twist

The Essential Content of the Article:  This article shows how throwing curveballs at a young age can stress the arm out earlier and lead to higher rate of an injury.

What it Proves: This article proves the reasons behind why it is bad to throw curveballs at the young age.  Kids are not fully developed so they don’t have enough neuromuscular control meaning they can get fatigued when throwing curveballs causing things in the arm to break down.It also shows ids also do not have proper mechanics which puts strain more on the arm causing more likelihood of injury.

3: Examine the Rapid Rise of Tommy John Surgery in Youth Baseball

http://www.si.com/edge/2015/07/30/examining-tommy-john-surgery-youth-baseball-mlb

The Essential Content of the Article: This article shows the rise in kids being injured due to throwing to much.  There is one answer this article gives and that kids these days are just simply overthrowing which when not developed can cause injury.

What it Proves: This article proves that kids who get injured and want to continue to play must get the surgery.  It also proves that kids when they are younger usually play sports all year round as in 3 different sports but now kids are playing baseball in the fall, winter, spring and summer which is causing to much stress on the body and arm leading to injury.

4:Pitch 22

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/12842678/why-tommy-john-surgeries-cease-soon

The Essential Content of the Article:  This article shows the grind behind the pitchers who have so much to prove and all the stress it puts on the arm during the process leading to injury.

What it Proves:  It proves a few things, first that throwing a baseball overhand is very unnatural to the body.  You see pitchers throw once a week but softball pitchers can go every game because underarm is a normal motion.  This article shows that someone who throw a 95mph fastball has so much stress on the arm that the forearm wants to detach from the body but is held to the upper arm by the UCL ligament.

5: Broken From Baseball

http://www.10news.com/longform/broken-from-baseball-the-rise-in-youth-baseball-injuries

The Essential Content of the Article: This article shows the damage that can be done from overthrowing and the pain kids can go through after this happening.  It also shows some details behind what the UCL does and how it can be hurt.  Also, this article gives some information on the man Tommy John in which the surgery was named from.

What is Proves: This article proves that kids are being over used.  Kids these days start playing travel ball which is stated in the article that have kids competing all over the country and going to showcases.  This is a lot of stress and work ethic for a young kid who is not fully grown so can have easier injury cases.

Stone Money Rewrite—tiggs18

The Importance of Money

What really is money?  People nowadays work their whole lives trying to receive some pieces of paper at the end of each week in which basically runs our world.  We hear people talk about the american dream in which, is a term that can have many definitions, in which usually, results in you having enough of these pieces of paper to be financially stable.  If we think about it deeply we will realize, that we receive these pieces of paper in which are called money and then from there, we base your whole life off of them.

People trade these pieces of paper for anything from food to fuel themselves to boats in which they can have travels out in the sea with.  It is strange concept to think of because to some people, money really doesn’t exist.  In a way, we are alike the people in the island of Yap.  They had the limestones in which they did not have actual possession of, and they used it as “money” in which they traded someone in return for say, a cow or anything worth value.  These people never really had the limestones in possession, they just said they were theirs, but they sat in the same spot.  This is a great example of how that is also a way we live off today in our world.  At the end of each work week, peoples bank accounts go from a number to a higher number, in which they receive no money, just a lift on the number that it says in their accounts.  From there, some have to pay bills in which their number that just got raised, gets lowered right away and the account of the company they are paying a bill to, gets higher.  This is crazy because in both stories, there is no money that actually sit in hand of a person.

The idea of money not being in actually possession makes sense with the article of how fake money saved brazil.  Years ago, Brazils economy hit an all time low and there needed to be a way to save it.  They thought of a new way in which help save the economy by the next day.  Again their money was all based of accounts, no one had the money in actual possession which relates to how we are today and also to the island of Yap.  These people somehow fixed their economy from this method and also got a grip on how money will actually work.

Money is an adroit concept in so many ways.  The goal right when one start’s school is all played out in a long run to make more of these pieces of paper to make your life more fun and acceptable.  We start by giving these pieces of paper or numbers in an account away to go to school in which we get another piece of paper in return from that, and then this helps us get jobs and which from there, we receive more money again from ones job.  So maybe this world just revolves around paper.  Some people say stop wasting paper because it ruins our world but does it actually?  To some, it ruins the world because we need trees but also, it runs the world because everyone works everyday to get some.

There is a saying that usually parents use that goes, “does money grow on trees?”  If we really think about it, yes it does.  Its all paper which comes from trees.

Summaries—tiggs18

  1. How To Change the World

It seems counterintuitive that people around the world do not want to make it a better place.  Somethings go untold through media which should be shared while others are shared that is just for publicity.  Everyone knows what a business entrepreneur does but does anyone know what a socialentrepreneur do?  No, because it goes unsaid what they do for the world.  The article is basically how they help the social life the same way that business is helped by business entrepreneurs.  There are people all over the world doing things to keep other countries safe and healthy but they never go told in stories on the news.  The book can describe ideas on how to make the world a cleaner and safer place.  Lives are being saved while you have no idea that is happening.  One person can make a difference in this world and that one person can become a hero.

2. Men Defining Rape: A History

“You cannot thread a moving needle”.  It is counterintuitive that rape is not reported as much as it should be.  This article is here to bring back the old times of what rape really meant.  It its definition changes as time moves forward in the world so what really is rape. You can not have sexual intercourse with a female against her will.  That will always be rape.  From having to pay the father of the virgin you raped a certain amount of money, to having to go to jail for a long time. We see how the times have changed and this determination of taking someones else body for granted is always added you because it should not be a real idea at the end of it all.

3. Does Using Paper Take C02 out of the Environment?

It seems counterintuitive that people or carpenters cut down trees all the time for reasons to get paper and other things that are just recycled again.  You can ask yourself that when some cuts down a tree, isn’t it possible to just plant one in the same spot and have nothing change at all?  This article is about how cutting down the trees releases carbon dioxide into the environment is very bad.  We have to send our paper across the country just to have them send it right back which doesn’t make the most of sense.  To much of what goes on with cutting down trees can hurt our environment and the more we do it, the more we will pay.  When you are done with something that can be recycled, you should do that because one at a time it can help save our world.  Trees are very important to our ecosystem and we need to keep them in the forrest with the carbon that they possess.
