A music educator is one of the greatest and well equipped entrepreneurs the school system has at their disposal. From the start music educators are put into a circumstance of having to be in strict competition with other educators as well as within themselves. What I mean by this is that being a music educator in order to have a higher rate of success it falls on the shoulders of the individual to be well rehearsed in many fields not only those of music. I myself know this first hand being a music education major at Rowan University. An entrepreneur is someone who takes on the a job or task that has considerable risks with no guarantee of a certain outcome. A music educator is the epitome of an entrepreneur.

One may ask how is it that a music educator can be seen as an entrepreneur? But they are actually one in the same when put on a panel. Being a music educator there are many obstacles your forced to overcome if you plan to be successful. Initially before becoming an educator we are first be music education major getting into the program we are put to the test not only to see if we are academically proficient but after an audition if were well versed in our primary instrument. As a music education major one is stretched well across the field of what makes someone successful. At a given time a music education major will be taking between 6 to 8 classes, due to having to not only take general education classes but music course such as theory and performance based classes as well. Just as an entrepreneur a music educator must be well versatile in time management, finding time to complete task even if it means losing out on sleep or taking a cut in pay in order to keep your business running.

Not only is it important that as a music educator they be well-trained in their field of music but must have a background of marketing themselves and their product. An Entrepreneurs job is to push what he or she is selling meaning they must have a plan in order to give them the best odds. An educator has the same job our job not only entails on having the music and performance on our minds but we must be able to advocate for our programs whether that be for funding or recruitment. Graduating with a music education major gives the opportunity to work within the school system but able to do private business as well which can range from private lessons to working for a music store that does lessons of their own. It is of utmost importance that being in the field of music and being an entrepreneur one must but self-motivated and willing to fail because failures will come along the way. With the failure it is important to be able to self evaluate to fix the things that went wrong.

Taking a look at all the similarities that each of these occupations shows that by being a music educator it puts them at advantage. Being that all throughout the time of schooling in the music education program its done nothing but prep individuals to be in charge of their own futures. Whether that be in the music field or not they have a vast skill set that comes with being a successful entrepreneur.

Vancouver has a huge problem with heroin addicts committing crimes to support their habits. The “free heroin for addicts” program is doing everything they to stop addicts from committing crimes. Addicts have a hard time getting through their day to day lives such as jobs, interactions, and relationships. Because of their addiction they will steal, burglarize, and vandalize for the drug. No limit is to vast when the result leads to their next fix, feeding into their addiction. The problem with this program is that it won’t help to ween these addicts off using heroin. The city is the only benefiting factor in keeping the crime rates from rising. By providing the drug, these addicts will be off the streets, which in turn will prevent them from committing minor street crimes. This will also keep the heroin users out of the hospital. Hospitals having to deal with addicts who choose to use drugs or unsanitary needles and then finding themselves unable to afford hospital bills and hard to cope without the drug. This program gives people free heroin in the cleanest way possible. This will in turn fix the city  but not the addiction that these people face.

Enough About You- Baritonemusicman

Money seems to have a big role in our society; we can’t do much or get far if we don’t have any. Money is valuable in different ways, even when we can’t see it physically. In today’s society faith is put in the government and in the banking system that our money is being handled in the proper manner, if not then we would have to hide all of our money under our mattress or around the house. I have no clue what happens in the banks, or how they take care of our money. I always thought money was simple; we either have some or we don’t. However, after I was introduced to this assignment, the Yap Fei, US gold, French francs, Brazilian cruzeros, and debit accounts now seem similar. No one actually sees the money being transferred. When we get paid, we aren’t handed cash, we don’t receive a physical check, the money’s all directly transferred to the bank account, and we are forced to have faith that we received more money.

  1. What if a large number of scientific studies had found there was one activity that could improve our cognitive function, help our memory systems to work, help us to learn language, help us to moderate our emotional state, help us to solve complex problems, and help our brains to be healthier. (Collins) Now think what if it turned out that the one thing that could make such a huge impact was being taken out of the public school system due to funding. One would think something that is able to make such a huge impact on those who part take we would want to get that to the masses. This special thing is no drug but what it is music. Music education alone when looked at in the macro sense should be seen as something all schools should part take in. The hypothesis of this essay will be the adverse affects of cutting music programs and how detrimental it actually is to the student body.

2. The effects of music education in the public school system has made tremendous achievements. It has been proven thru many studies that music education helps in cognitive effects within its students. But yet at this day and age its coming down to funding that music education is being taken out of lower-income and urban areas In doing so it causes students to lose out on advantages that come with taking on music. A study done  by neuroscientist had discovered that in many cases the brains of musicians functioned far more effectively than those who weren’t. By taking away the music program its a field that the schools system fails to tap into and use to their advantage to better their students. My hypothesis will be the important role that music education plays in the school curriculum.

For my research essay I will be claiming that music educators are the best therapist the school system doesn’t know they have.

The Essential Content of the Article: This article gives a first person view of how music education experiences were able to be manifest in real life situations. By bringing this article in its less about the numbers and brings in real life perspective from someone who has experience with music education.

What it proves: By using this article I will be able to draw from the real life perspective of students who have had thru the music education process. By having first person recollection its creates more reliability giving a face to the studies.

The Consequences of Curtailing Music Education

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/tavissmiley/tsr/dudamel-conducting-a-life/the-consequences-of-curtailing-music-education/

The Essential Content of the Article: In this article it discusses the adverse effects that are occurring due to the cut of music education programs. It also delves into how in most cases the programs are lost by lower-income or urban communities due to funding. And those who are on the higher bracket are less likely to suffer due to being able to put their kids in private study but that isn’t always an option for those in a lower-income bracket

What is Proves: In using this sources I’ll be able to delve into the adverse affects that taking away music education will create further differences between brackets of income. By taking away theses programs those who live in lower-income brackets are less likely to be able to continue their studies meaning they wouldn’t be receiving the same advantages those whom continue on are able to receive. Creating inequality in learning styles because a source has been taken away from them.

What if every child had access to music education from birth? | Anita Collins | TEDxCanberra

The Essential Content of the Article: During this Speech Ainta Collins discusses of findings of neuroscientist of how music is able to have so much of effect on children growing up. Giving visual understanding to how much brain activity music education is able to accomplish all at once.

What this Proves: I will be using her finding for giving a visual outlook on brain activity as well as giving in-depth examples of how musicians have highly developed memory when put against those who didn’t have that musical advantage.

  1. It seems counterintuitive that an article would discourage shoppers from purchasing from companies that claim to be “buy one, give one”. Meaning that by making your purchase you would be giving to those who were less privileged. Toms the company claims that for every pair of shoes and/or pair of glasses purchased, will result in the company donating to someone from a developing country. But what isn’t well researched is if the aid is going to the proper person and weather it’s creating an adverse affect on the community’s economy. In the type of aid given to these developing companies they sometimes end up doing more damage than help. Such as when a Tom’s employee made the claim that by giving shoes they were able to “promote education because children are often barred from entering schools barefoot. But after speaking to one of the core Ethiopian giving partners (International Orthodox Christian Charities) it was discovered that they were giving shoes in school to students who already owned shoes. So the intent was there but the aid wasn’t getting to the proper people. In sight of this information when attempted to research thru the Toms website there is no clear way of how their buy-one, give one process works. There is little to no information allowing the consumer to know where their money is going. Though they seem to be doing great work in attempting to help they need to make it clear to their customers what it is they are attempting to achieve and how exactly their going about doing it.

2. It seems counterintuitive that CrossFit has shown so many amazing results in its participants but is actually unsafe. Though the CrossFit is able to pack a huge workout in a short amount of time with its combination of interval training and weight lifting its cons out weigh the pros. In taking a survey of 132 people it was shown that 97 of the original 132 reported getting hurt during CrossFit training, most involving the shoulders and spine. In another case there was a condition called rhabdomyolysis, which is where muscle fibers are pushed to the point of breaking down causing them to enter the bloodstream leading to life-threatening kidney damage. Because of cases like this it shows that the workouts of CrossFit directly tied to the injuries and causing damage to participants bodies. Which has then led to multiple lawsuits being filed not only against CrossFit but those who were researchers and advocates of the positive affects of it. Those who part take in CrossFit tend to embrace the fact that CrossFit pushes the body to an extreme measure forcing it to adapt. But in doing so they’ve been deemed unsafe and held responsible for the injuries and health problems.

3. It seems counterintuitive that Gatorade is both beneficial but yet at the same time can be a detriment to health depending on the context. Gatorade is pushed as a sports drink, and according to their research they found that in drinking Gatorade athletes were able to replace lost electrolytes, also bring carbohydrates and hydration into the mix all in one drink. Gatorade also claims their sport drink is able to hydrate the body better than water due to their additional ingredients. Which has also been backed by a report from University of California, Berkley claiming that sports drink might be better for children and athletes that engage in prolonged, vigorous physical activity for over an hour, especially in hot conditions. But where lies the problem is there are those ingesting this product who have not been active or active enough for at least an 60 to 90 minutes. So in doing so their body are taking in an excessive amount of calories that it doesn’t need.  In giving this to kids Berkeley researchers have stated that the sugars in these sports drinks could be contributing to the child obesity epidemic. As people who don’t need to continue to ingest this product it causes weight gain and extra sodium which then will lead to higher blood pressure. What needs to be done in this case is individuals really need to asses what it is that they are consuming and/or allowing their children to consume.

Visual Rewrite-Baritonemusicman

0:00-0:06 As the ad begins the screen fades from black to an all white screen as two hands on either end of the screen raised together facing one another each holding a glass of wine. As video begins to play it can be seen that the entire video is being played in slow motion. You can tell this due to how slowly the hands hold each glass of wine are moving towards one another. Which is done purposely to show every detail of what is occurring as theses glasses come closer to one another. All that is in the picture are the two hands forcing all focus to be on the two set of hands. The background being white as to not draw attention thereby the viewer can focus on what is happening. It is not specified as to whether or not the hands belong to a male or female. But visually they do look to be like the hands of men. It isn’t written in stone as to what gender seeing how the faces of the individuals are never presented for the viewers which I think was done purposely because that is not what is important in regard to the message the ad is portraying.

0:07-0:13 As the ad continues the glasses are raised towards one another in an attempt to make a toast and clink their glasses. The hands then begin to move across the screen towards one another in an attempt to make contact. As soon as the glasses make contact with one another they completely shatter in the hands of the two individuals. As the glasses being to break in front of the us, the viewer we can see the glass begins to shatter first then as it continues to break you see the wine toss-up and begin to fall creating a huge mess. The hands then begin to separate as the glass and wine is still falling upon them all that’s left is the bottom handle of the wine glass showing the damage that was done. The two hands then retreat to either end of the screen from where they came.

0:14-0:22 Now that the two hands holding the wine have gone away but now are returning with two mugs of beer attempting to raise their glasses together once again. As the video continues the hands brought into screen in the same fashion from either end of the screen moving towards each other in slow motion. This time as the mugs are brought into view you can clearly see a reference to college life and college drinking. The mugs clearly have a logo of a college “U STATE” written across both mugs. The mugs of beer make contact with one another once again they shatter. As the damage is done in slow motion you can see the shards of glass going in different directions and the beer following. The only thing left as the hands separate are the handles to the mugs leaving just as much of a mess if not more then the glasses of wine from the previous shot. As the hands separate they leave the screen by  returning to side of the screen they once entered.

0:23-0:31 The hands holding the mugs of beer have left the frame now having two hands replaced them moving in from either end of the screen one again. They are now holding a glass cup of some sort of liquor and ice. The glasses again are moved towards one another in slow motion but just before the two glasses collide like they had once done before a third hand interrupts entering from the bottom right of the screen and interject the collision of the cups saving the two from breaking just as the glasses of wine or mugs of beer. Just as the remnants of the glass settle in the glass cup a sign appears centered horizontally  and roughly an inch or two from the top of the screen reads “FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK” and across the bottom reads “Ad Council U.S. Department of Transportation” which was also centered horizontally and roughly an inch from the bottom of the screen. The video then fades to a black screen.

This video was able to speak volumes even without the ability to hear what was being said. Each of the different shots were able to address a certain demographic in my opinion. When I think of wine what comes to mind is someone who is older or mature. When the ad used the reference of the beer mugs with the college logo that was able to portray the young adult or teen. And having them both have the same outcome of destruction shows that no matter the age or the type of alcohol it can be dangerous causing horrific events to occur. In each of the collisions it was important to show that some part of the glass or mug was left in the hands when they left the screen. It showed that even after the horrific event had occurred each of them were left with a piece they would have to deal with. Its known amongst young adults that the common quote is “That will never happen to me” but this ad shows it actually can and will if your not careful. Its advises everyone to take the right precautions when drinking and showing like in the last frame stopping that final glass could be the difference of saving a friend from a horrible accident. Stopping the final glass isn’t only to be taken literally but I think it is symbolism for all the different ways of aiding a friend who has had to much to drink. Whether that be taking their keys, finding them a safer ride home, allowing them to sleep over, or taking the drink from their hands.

Missing Dollar-Baritonemusicman

In the case of the missing dollar paradox there is no missing dollar. The way that the structure is set up is to make the reader think there is a missing dollar but in actuality all the money is accounted for. At the point where the paradox states that the twenty-seven plus two is twenty-nine is correct but your not supposed to be adding the two dollars that the waiter took but the three dollars that was returned to them. The two dollars that the waiter took is already included in the twenty-seven dollars the ladies know to be the bill. By adding the three dollars returned to the women you end with the original thirty.

Stone Money Rewrite- Baritonemusicman

” What’s it Worth to You?”

As a child growing up [punc] I always thought as money being one definite amount value. And why wouldn’t I [punc] growing up in the United States [punc] in school its [punc] taught a dollar is worth just that [punc] a dollar. But moving forward in life I was able to experience that money is only worth what we as people give it. In the fifth grade I was able to travel to my families original country of Haiti. It was at this time that I found out first hand that money isn’t always worth what we know it to be here in the United States. Now imagine a young boy walking into the small store near his home in America. As he glances around the store he reaches in his pocket to see how much money he has and pulls out one dollar. He knows with this dollar he is able to either purchase a bottle of soda that cost one dollar or a bag a chips that also cost one dollar. Unfortunately the value of his dollar is not enough to purchase both items. Now if we were to move this young boy to Haiti doing the same thing [punc] walks into the store and pulls out of his pocket one dollar. But now the difference is being that he is in Haiti his money is no longer only worth one dollar. Being that he is now in a different country [punc] his dollar can not only get him that soda and the bag of chips but can also purchase some candy as well. That same dollar has increased in value just by relocating where it was spent.

At this moment right now the American dollar is worth 65.09 Haitian Gourdes according to exchange-rates.org. And that is the official rate from the bank but depending on what merchant you go to the dollar could be worth more or less. I know personally that American currency is much more in demand then the Haitian Gourde. Being that it is in higher demand there is more space to barter and discuss prices of certain services like cabs, workers, servants, and  items within the street markets. At a young age I was able to see that American currency was worth a higher value than Haiti’s own currency. It provided insight of the faith and value that had been put on American money. America having a history of being stable and a secure government makes its money more reliable. Being able to experience this taught me that the intrinsic value of money is really only based off of the value that people give it which ties also into how stable the government the money belongs to is. As long as there is faith in the currency whether it be dollars, stones, gold or even corn as long we give it value and are willing to trade for it then it will always have value.

After figure out what it was that gave money its worth it wasn’t much of a surprise reading the article on Brazil’s inflation problem. The value of money ties into how stable the government is at that moment. When looking at Brazil the faith in their government was at an all time low. The only way that Brazil would be able to fix the problem is by starting over, creating a new rate and form of currency in order to sway the minds of its citizens. At this point Brazil was up to an 80% inflation rate a month which is outrageous. Inflation being that high causes the value of Brazilian currency to continue to drop thereby forcing everyone to spend as quickly as possible. In the video above by Doug Levinson he clearly states that this is not good for the economy. It would cause overconsumption and hoarding of goods which would only make the prices of goods and services rise even more thereby causing more inflation.

Inflation being that high meant that the value of Brazil’s currency was low and prices of items were only getting higher causing the trust in the government to diminish. The ways in which the government attempted to address this problem had barely any effect in fact in some cases it made it worse. Leaving the people of Brazil to lose faith in the value of money. In order to fix the problem they had to do just that create faith in the government and the money system. The system that was used at the time was tarnished it would no longer be accepted or trusted by Brazilians. In order to achieve this the Brazilian finance minister invited Edmar Bacha an economist. Bacha and his team came up with a new currency they would call Unit of Real Value “URV’s” for short.  So in bring forth URV’s people could be tricked into thinking that money had value again. Because URV’s was a constant rate it was able to sway the minds of the citizens creating trust and in doing so putting faith back into the money. Doing this meant the citizens would continue to spend at a steady rate which will help the economy grow which helped create more jobs. By creating more jobs it’s a domino effect creating a bigger and stronger economy thereby causing faith in the government and its money system to grow fixing the original problem of trust between the citizens and government.

Milton Friedman’s article “The Island of Stone Money” introduces the people of Yap where there are no “valuable metals” and so as a collective the people of Yap decided to give value to stone coins. When I first read this it threw me for a loop to think that stones would be an adequate means of making purchases was beyond my comprehension. The fact that theses stone coins depending on their size could be left at another persons home but it would just be understood that this huge stone would now belong to someone else I couldn’t comprehend it. When put in comparison of the way we give value to our own money you find that it’s not so different after all. Here in the states we grew from a bartering system where goods would be traded for what we thought what was of equal value, such as trading a wagon wheel for a crate of corn. When then moved on trading gold from gold to paper money and now electronic. Now with the exchange of electronic money you never truly see the actual money its supposed to represent unless you withdrew it all. But I can go to any website enter my account number and make purchase. There is no visible transaction only the changing of numbers to my account balance to me that is not much different from the exchange of ownership the Yaps would do amongst themselves. Even though a person may have never even seen this so-called wealth by faith he owns it and is able to use it to make purchases just as we do.
