Definition Argument — socrateslee13

Gun control laws were constructed to reduce the overall crimes that are involved with guns. The purpose behind gun control laws was for people to protect themselves from predators, reduce gun deaths, and prevent injustices from occurring. Gun control laws are defined as laws passed to restrict the sale of guns and control their use. By controlling the use of guns such as people using them to protect themselves, is necessary because a study revealed that five women are murdered with guns every day in the United States. The study later stated a woman’s of being murdered increases 500% if a gun’s present during a domestic dispute. Another method for people to protect themselves would be how gun control would lead to fewer suicides. One study unveiled that in between 1999 and 2013 there were 270,237 firearm suicides in the United States, accounting for all about 52% of all suicides during those years. With these numbers if we were to have more control on gun laws the result would be fewer suicides.

Other countries who have more restrictive gun laws then the U.S. have a lower gun homicide and suicide rates. Due to gun control laws countries have reduced gun related crimes. Another reason would be that gun control laws would reduce the number of accidental gun deaths. A study revealed that approximately 50% of unintentional fatal shootings were self-inflicted. An additional reason would be that the presence of a gun makes a conflict more violent. A study has shown that the weapons used in altercations were those closest at hand. Without the guns being present the outcomes of some altercations would not escalate to deaths.

Gun control laws can lead to preventing injustices from occurring because when looking into some cases it has been found that legally own guns have been frequently stolen and used by criminals. An additional reason would be that guns are rarely used for self defense. A study revealed that of the 29,618,300 violent crimes committed between 2007 and 2011  235,700 victims used guns to protect themselves. Another injustice that gun control could prevent is that high capacity magazines have often turned murders into mass murders. One study has unveiled that when high capacity magazines were used in mass shootings, the death rate rose 63% and the injury rate rose 156%.

White Paper — socrateslee13

1. Working Hypothesis 1

Hypothesis: Altering the gun laws depending on the different states and their boundary lines would benefit citizens across the U.S. and aid police officers, as well as state officials in correctly convicting people for gun related crimes.

1a. Working Hypothesis 2

Hypothesis: Refining gun laws would improve living conditions for citizens within America and make police officers convictions of people for gun related crimes more accurate by not charging people for misunderstanding circumstances.

2. Topics for Smaller Papers

Definition/Classification Argument

Neighboring States have a great impact on each other because when a state has stricter gun laws, they use the neighboring state to break the gun laws. For example studies have revealed that in Chicago, Illinois the guns related to some gun crimes have been from the neighboring state of Missouri.

Being wrongfully convicted of gun related crimes such as possession of a fire arm, even with a license or registration for seed fire arm occurs too often. For example there have been cases where people have been convicted in New Jersey for possession of a fire arm, yet they have a registration and license for the gun but rather it being a New Jersey license it’s a license from a different state such as Pennsylvania or Texas.

Cause/Effect Argument

States that do not cooperate with not only their neighboring states but as well as other states around the U.S. causes people to be wrongfully convicted of gun related charges and gun trafficking. Due to their lack of efforts to not cooperate it makes things much more harder for people to coexist because of they were to cooperate, much of the crimes related to guns could be solved with states working together.

Rebuttal Argument

States have their own right to choose their particular laws that only apply to their states because that is their right and the states already have come to an agreement by passing a law that states certain states will acknowledge license and registration for a fire arm from certain other states.

3. Current State of the Research Paper

I would describe the state of my research paper as progressing forward because I want to keep gathering more and more sources to help support my thesis as well as help form my different paragraphs by using the different paragraphs to transition from each other and form my paper correctly. I still have some work to do though because I’m not satisfied with my work so far, the grammar, tone a lot of things could be better to produce my best work and I will continue to make changes and piece things together and rearrange things until they all fit together.

Polio Notes — socrateslee13

  • “It was a fact that if the world was free of polio at one point it would be free forever.”However if this is true than that would indicate that nothing can come back, once it is eliminated it is gone. But that may not be true in terms of bacteria because some bacteria rather than being eliminated, the disease lies dormant.
  • “This generation is not ready to eradicate polio.”This is stating that because of the circumstances, or the resources around us that polio is not capable of being eliminated. However this might not be true because through research, data, and tests we can change circumstances. One example would be how at one point measles was an epidemic and we were able eliminate this disease and the same is possible for polio
  • Lack of vaccination due to religious reasons or because people choose not to get the vaccination such as herd immunity. Herd immunity is when the majority is immune however a select few are not such as 95%  of the population is immune while 5% is not. Herd immunity has setbacks because in doing so instead of people getting things that could prevent diseases such as polio and measles because people say they don’t need a vaccination to since every one else is vaccination
  • The religious aspect for muslims is taken into consideration because there is a fact that states there is pork within the  vaccination
  • The united states went into Pakistan to give vaccinations to children to cure polio. However this was a cover up because the people conducting the vaccinations were U.S. spies trying to gather information about Osama Bin Ladin. Now when the U.S. desires and attempts to help Pakistan with its epidemic, Pakistan does not trust the U.S. for their offer to help because before there true intensions were not to help Pakistan but for the U.S.’s own gain
  • “The world is too fragmented to come together and eradicate a disease.” This may not be a true statement because people can come together out of the goodness of their hearts as well as using force to make people come together.

Practice Opening

The world is capable of eliminating polio within the next 20 years due to fact we are able to come together as a population and eradicate the disease. We are capable of eliminating the disease in various ways because we can come together either by the goodness of our hearts, by force or by the technology and research that we gather. Due to the research we gather more people will be informed and know what is required to eradicate the disease.

Safer Saws — socrateslee13

1a. Within the article, “Saws cut off 4,000 fingers a year. This Gadget could fix that,” the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation stated, “Safety has historically been one of the Bosch principals… and is reflected in our slogan ‘Invented for life.’

1b. This quote is stating that safety is crucial to The Robert Bosch Tool Corporation and that safety is so significant that the business references it in their slogan.

1c. This is a proposal claim because they are introducing the idea that safety is one of their principals. By doing so they are trying to convince anyone who thinks otherwise that they support safety with that claim. They introduce their slogan at the end of the quote to support their claim even further.

1d. This claim is trying to persuade everyone to see the positive side of Robert Bosch Tool Corporation. However, if Robert Bosch Tool Corporation considers safety one of their priorities. Instead of continuing to release saws that have been proven to cause various injuries, they showed seek safer methods to lower the number of injuries.

2a. “That the price of their table saws with the safety devices would ‘increase dramatically,’ eliminating low-priced consumer bench-top saws, and SawStop would have an unfair market advantage.”

2b. This quote is making the assumption that if the SawStop table saws were to be put on the market, it would give the SawStop in unfair advantage due to the price.

2c. This is a opinion claim purely because they have no evidence that when the SawStop table saws hit the market, that will be the outcome.Throughout the quote they use assumptions to make their claim however these assumptions are only their opinions rather than facts.

2d. This claim is attempting to give off the impression that the SawStop table saws would crippled the other competitors leaving them bankrupted or losing money. Nonetheless this is not accurate because they  can not be sure what would happen if SawStop table saws were to be sold, since the SawStop table saws haven’t been sold.

3a. “Current table safety standards have proven ineffective in protecting consumers.”

3b. This quote is declaring that the standards set to be considered as safe have been tested and failed to protect the consumers.

3c. This is a opinion claim because the quote states its been proven but doesn’t provide any evidence for the claim.

3d. This claim mainly expressing its opinion without stating any real facts because they make claim about how it has been proven to be ineffective. However the quote doesn’t back the statement up with any results such as revealing test results from a survey that proves how ineffective they claim table safety standards to be.

4a.”Flesh detection and braking technology and user friendly blade guard(s) have been available for years. The flesh detection technology stops a blade instantly when its touched by human flesh. Wec says the technology could have prevented his 2007 injury from a Bosch miter saw.”

4b. This quote is stating that the cause of the injury could have been avoided because there is technology available to prevent this injury.

4c. This is a proposal claim because they are introducing the idea that the there is safer technology that could prevent injuries . However  Bosch doesn’t use that technology and continues to use a different technology even though the safer technology has been around for years. By doing so they are trying to convince everyone that this injury could  have been avoided because if they had the safer technology this injury would not have occurred.

4d. This claim is trying to convince everyone that the Bosch company is to blame for Wec’s injury. In doing so they introduce the idea that the there is alternative technology that could’ve avoided the injury. However rather then using that technology Bosch uses a technology that doesn’t stop the blade.

5a. “What you have is somebody who has invented a dramatic technology that seems to reduce virtually all the injuries associated with table saws.”

5b. This quote is declaring that someone has been able to reduce the number of injuries dealing with table saws by an enormous amount with their invention.

5c. This is a opinion claim because the quote states a claim, however they do not support their claim with any evidence.

5d. This quote is mainly stating an opinion without providing any evidence to back up the claim.

6a. “This week some of the nation’s biggest power tool companies sent their executives to Washington. They come to argue against tougher safety mandates for so-called table saws, the popular power tools with large open spinning blades.”

6b. This quote stating the biggest power tool companies of the nation sent a representative to voice their opinions on why they are against tougher safety mandates for table saws.

6c. This is a a judgmental claim because the quote is focusing on how the nations biggest power tools are coming to go against safety mandates for table saws. By doing so the quote is mainly portraying the power tools coming as a negative instead of just stating facts.

6d. This quote is focusing more so on the power tools coming to oppose the safety mandates for table saws rather than remaining neutral and stating the facts of the situation. Furthermore at the end of the quote, is a even more judgemental claim because the quote focuses only one part of what the power tool’s table saws do instead of stating everything the saw can do. In doing so, they are leaving information out so the audience will only see one side of a story rather than understanding everything about the power tool’s table saws.

7a. “What the industry saw as a problem was not the amputations and injuries occurring on their product, but the advent of a technology that could prevent those injuries. That was the problem we created.”

7b. The quote is declaring with sarcasm that the industry had a problem with his manufacturers and him because they were capable solving the problem that the industry couldn’t.

7c. This an opinion claim because the quote is not stating any supporting evidence to prove this is a true statement. Rather the claim is an opinion because the quote only portrays one side of the situation instead of both sides.

7d. This quote mainly focuses on the opinion of Gass because the quote only states his opinion and does not state the opinion of the opposing side. Furthermore, the quote doesn’t have any evidence to support his claim to make his claim a valid one.

8a. “People who have lost fingers, hand, and arms to table saws have been devastated by their injuries. Those who who lack medical insurance suffer an unfathomable amount of pain, multiple surgeries, and a bill that they may never be able to pay so long as they they are unable to work.”

8b. This quote is stating the different injuries people associated with table saws have been through and stating how the affects of the injuries have impacted their lives.

8c. This is a proposal quote because the quote is trying to bring awareness to the injuries people deal with when they are using table saws. In addition to stating the injuries, they bring up the affects these injuries have on their lives.

8d. This quote goes through the injuries people have endured with table saws. Following the injuries these people have, the quote states how these injuries have affected the lives of the injured people. By doing so this quote is attempting to make the audience see the negative table saws caused bring up awareness about the situations that occur with table saws. To go along with that the quote brings up the affects that these injuries have on these people’s lives.

Missing Dollar — socrateslee13

There is no missing dollar within the paradox. This is proven because the author informs the audience they paid $30.00, however the meal was only $25.00. Therefore the $5.00 that the cashier returns to the waiter is split between the waiter and the three ladies. The waiter returns a $1.00 to each lady and stole $2.00 for himself. The three ladies didn’t pay $9.00 each because it’s impossible to evenly pay a $25.00 bill with the ladies paying $9.00 each.

Open Strong — socrateslee13

Some have made the claim that in order to reduce gun related crimes we must have stricter gun laws. However, for the mid west and deep south states they have traditionally found a decrease in gun related crimes with considerably less strict gun laws. Within Illinois, they have been struggling to find a solution to their gun related crimes. However, their neighboring state Missouri has already found a solution by enforcing loose gun laws and as a result they have remained to keep a considerably lower murder rate. Within the confines of America, there has been a noticeable increase of gun related crimes, in states with strict gun laws. In order to reduce gun related crimes, one solution would be to lessen gun laws.

A05: Proposal+5 — socrateslee13

For my research essay I will be examining how one state has a higher murder rate compared to the neighboring state who has considerably less strict gun laws. Throughout the past few years some states have become more stern in terms of gun laws as a result to lower the murder rate. Other states have remained to keep their laws the same because thats what they deem traditional. Statistics provided by Neighboorhoodscout.com, has revealed that the murder rate of Chicago, Illinois compared to St. Louis, Missouri is much higher due to the fact that Chicago, Illinois was at the top of the list and St. Louis, Missouri was two spots away from the bottom of the list. Based off this evidence it leaves people to wonder if states enforce strict gun laws why is their murder rate is so much higher than states who have gun laws that are not as strict?

During the process of my research I was able to discover that in Chicago,Illinois that most gun related crimes have been committed with guns outside that city or state. This means people are bringing guns from other states into Illinois to commit crimes. Another report showed that the gun laws of Missouri could be argued to be one of the weakest gun laws. This was discovered in the article when the author stated how the regulations in Missouri are similar to other mid west and deep south states, claiming them to be lenient. However even though these laws are lenient they still have lower murder rates in comparison to states with strict gun laws. A noticeably difference between the two states would be within Missouri, their gun laws have remained the same due to their traditional views. Missouri’s traditional views of allowing people to easily obtained guns would eliminate one of Illinois problems. The on going problem in Illinois is most gun related crimes are committed with guns outside of that state. If Illinois where to lessen their gun laws people would not need to bring guns outside the state.

“Is PTSD Contagious?”

Brannan Vines has never been to war. But she’s got a warrior’s skills.”

Who is Brannan Vines and because of her lack of war experience how is she able to have skills of a warrior. Also, in terms of skills which skills in particular does the author believe Brannan Vines has and where did Brannan Vines get these skills from.

“Skills on the battlefield, crazy person behavior in a drug store”

What makes Brannan Vines behavior considered crazy.? From this statement the author transitions from speaking about the skills Vines posses to how she behaved like a crazy person in a drug store but not everyone can agree on every subject, so how does the author know what is considered crazy and what is not.

“Her nose starts running she’s so pissed, and there she is standing in a CVS, snotty and deaf with rage, like some kind of maniac, because a tiny elderly woman needs an extra minute to pay for her dish soap or whatever.”

Why does the author portray Vines in such a way using the phrase, “like some kind of maniac” as if to imply Vines was a psychotic person. Further more how does she know if the elderly woman is tiny or not. What if during the situation the elderly woman was around the same height as Vines would that change some readers perspective? By stating the elderly woman was tiny was the author trying to pursue the readers to think to that because the elderly woman was tiny it made Vines reaction worse.

“Caleb has been home since 2006, way more than enough time for Brannan to catch his symptoms”

How is that time frame more than enough time for Brannan to catch for Caleb’s PTSD symptoms? Which symptoms did Brannan catch from Caleb and how do we know if she caught them from Caleb instead of them developing on their own from her experiences in life. By this statement is the author trying to imply that Brannan caught Caleb’s symptoms? What happened within the time Caleb came back in 2006 until now for Brannan to catch his symptoms. Did Brannan catch Caleb’s symptoms while they were spending time together such as talking with each other, interacting with each other throughout the day or simply whenever Brannan observes or sees Caleb react a certain way to a particular situation.

Stone Money Rewrite — socrateslee13

Is Money Really Valuable?

To illustrate how worthless a dollar truly is, first we must envision the impact the dollar has on an economy. The economy can be affected greatly by the value of the dollar, for example the Great Depression and Brazil. These two examples display that the dollar itself only holds as much value as the people within that region claims it does. During both situations the dollar lost its value and as a result the people in that culture suffered greatly because the economy plummeted. The dollar value changes constantly in actuality the dollar or paper money is not worth much the reason it holds value is because the culture states the value of the money.

Within the essay “The Island of Stone Money,” by Milton Friedman, he emphasizes a method used for transactions within his story about a cultured known as the Yaps. The Yaps transactions where similar to what the France bank and the United States bank did when the France wanted gold from the U.S. The Yaps transactions never moved however the ownership did. Their currency was in stones and the stone took the place of the limestone that was on a different island. This is relatable to what the France Bank and The United States went through because the bank of France noticed the value of the U.S. dollar was depleting. As a result of the bank of France taking note of this they asked for gold in exchange for their previous transactions with the U.S. dollar. Similar to the Yaps and their transactions the U.S. put a certain amount of gold aside for the French and labeled that the property of France. The French approved of this transaction and likewise to the Yaps transactions the stone never moved, however the owner of the stone changed.

Similarly with the French and U.S. banking situation it reveals how the value of money doesn’t remain the same. Within the Yaps society, the use stones as their currency and the value of their stones can change depending on who is involved in the transaction. The stones held this value due to their society accepting it. However not every person within the society accepted the same amount of stones or accepted what we can get with our stones. Some residents of the society accepted one stone for one cow, while if we walk to another part of the island another person may offer us 2 coconuts for our one stone. Our neighbor may offer us 4 bags of rice for 2 stones, but the person who lives across the river may accept 4 bags of rice for 4 stones. From these different transactions reveals that the value of the stone within the Yap society will vary based on our consumer.

Traditionally people advise us in order to obtain money, we must save our money. However within the article “Back in Power, Abe Aims to Spend Japan Back to Economic Vitality,” by Hiroko Tabuchi, it suggests in order to make money you are required to spend money. This supports within the article when it was stated that those who support Abe’s concept claim his policy will defeat deflation and generate growth. The Japan government has decided they will spend a large amount of money in order to generate a stable economy, while other governments go with a more traditional approach and save their money in order to obtain money. This shows how the value of money constantly changes because Japan is trying to spend more money in order to become stable, however they were put in this situation because they spent too much money in the first place.

Spending too much money doesn’t always produce the same results for each economy. In the article, “How Fake Money Saved Brazil” by Chana Joffe-Walt, she went in depth about how brazil’s economy was plagued by inflation and each time they tried to spend money the prices of merchandise would rise. Their structure became stable by using a “fake” money system. They used a different currency to take the place of the previous one, however the the new currency the price remained the same. However since no one had euros they used their old currency and used it in place of the new one. For instance, if one bag of chips was one euro last week, it would be one euro this week. Due to no one having any euros that one euro would convert into 7 pounds, however the next week it would remain one euro but it would convert into 14 pounds instead of 7 pounds. This system was able to provide Brazil with the solution to their economic struggle despite the fact it contradicts the concept of the value of money. It is doing so because inflation still was occurring within the economy the only difference was the fact that they attached a physical label to make it appear as if inflation was not occurring. Inflation continued because each week the customers still had to pay more and more, nonetheless from their perspective the price remained the same.
