Definition Argument- Princess272

A term that’s definition is debated throughout the world is a father. It takes a true man to be a true father, because the two go hand in hand. In order to define a father, a man must first be defined. A man is someone who is of good moral standing, does what he needs to do in order to succeed, is true to his word, and cares deeply for others. An example of a true man as oppose to a self proclaimed man is that any man can get a woman pregnant, but it takes a special one to step up and be a father. This idea of stepping up to the plate is the main difference between a self proclaimed man and a true man.

Google defines the word father as “a man in relation to his natural child or children”. This definition is more than lacking luster; it lacks the essence of what a father is. A father in today’s society is considered a provider, protector, teacher, friend, exemplar, patriarch, disciplinarian, and spiritual leader. These eight attributes of a father in today’s society sheds light on what father should be but not who can be a father. Any man who stand ahead of the curve for a child and leads them to bettering themselves is truly a father.

My father in particular is a great man. He took in my eldest brother as his own when he married my mother even though he was not his biological child. At the mere age of 3, my  brother did not know the significance of what my father had chose to do. My father chose to lead the path for this bastard child even though he did not have to. He decided to provide, protect, teach, be a friend, exemplify, be a patriarch, disciplinarian, and be a spiritual leader for this child even though my father had no offspring of his own. Due to men like my father who step up and be the father other men were not ready to be, the definition by google stating a father is “a man in relation to his natural child or children” is false. My father was more of a dad than my eldest brother’s biological father could ever be.

Father’s teach in many different ways. Some ways fathers teach are through example, as a patriarch, through disciplinary actions, and through spiritual leading. My father did and continues to do all of these things. First and foremost, my father is a pastor; spiritual leading came with the territory of being him. he constantly reminds his children of what God has planned for us and how we should stay focused on him. Because of actions such as this, his moral standing has always been exemplary and was always the example of what a man and a father should be. My father constantly used bible quotes over the years to back anything he does. One of his favorites to quote was Ephesians verse 6  chapter 4, which states, “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training an admonition of the Lord”. With that said, he still had no problem chastising his children in order to help them understand right from wrong. In this aspect, the disciplinarian came out.

One action that always must be met in order to be considered a relatively good father is being “a man of your word”. A mans word is his bond. This aspect ties back to one of the most important attributes of being a father. Teaching what is right through example. If a father tells his children he will do something, it is a promise. A promise should never be broken or trust is lost. Without trust, a father cannot be a friend to their offspring. They can show kindness and compassion, but the level of interest cannot be faked. When keeping ones word is not seen as a priority, the bond is broken. The level of trust falls, and the relationship between the father and child suffers. If a man does not do everything in their power to keep their word to their children, they are not truly a father.

Although society has been changing and roles of mothers and fathers have been shifting, a father throughout time has always been the provider and protector of not only their children, but the family as a whole. In order to provide, fathers through the ages have gotten jobs that they may have not wanted to do, but they always made sure their family had the food on their table and a roof over their head. Fathers also have always been the protector of the family through different means. For some it’s a physical manifest of fighting an individual in order to protect his family; for others, it’s keeping their children out of the streets and getting an education.

According to google, a father is simply  “a man in relation to his natural child or children”. This false definition does not meet the standards of societies definition of a father, nor my own. A father does not need to be the biological father to his children, but rather a spiritual and moral leader that guides their children to a better life. This is done through teaching, being a trusting friend, protecting/ providing, leading by example, being man of good moral character, chastising children when needed, and being a spiritual leader. Without these qualities, no man can consider themselves a father let alone a great one.

Polio Notes- Princess272

Humanity could not get rid of polio even if it tried, and humanity has tried, multiple times. Every time the numbers for diseases such as polio or other diseases that can be vaccinated for diminishes to a minute number, humanity slows down its witch hunt for the disease considerably. Low numbers of individuals with a disease does not indicate being complacent is okay. The opposite is reality. If something needs to be eradicated, destroying most of it by definition is not eradicating it. This is the college equivalent of expecting a 100 percent on an exam that was never finished or handed in. Humanity fails to cross it’s T’s and neglects to dot it’s I’s when dealing with diseases such as polio or measles. For this simple fact, polio will not be eradicated any time in the foreseeable future.

Blind Summary

This article shows signs of being about revealing the issues with doctors successfully diagnosising breast cancer. There are many different ways to make the success of diagnosing breast cancer rate higher, but they are not being utilized by clinics and doctors across the nation. Doctors who misread these mammograms are not being held accountable for misdiagnosing these procedures, which in turn does not make these doctors to improve.

0:00-0:03

The scene began with the lens focused on a yellow and tan bottle of shampoo with a generic label. It may be apart of the ad promoting staying clean or good hygiene. The shampoo bottle was covered on the right side with soap. Behind the glass window of the shower where the shampoo is currently residing, their was a women in a white towel twirling another white towel over her hair. She then began to walk towards a corridor. This scene gives the impression of a home. This home could have very well be home to a family or the woman and her friends/ roommates.

0:04-0:05

The mysterious corridor is revealed have a mirror on the wall. There may have been a sink underneath the mirror, but it was yet to be shown at this point in the scene. The woman wipes the fog from the mirror to expose her face in the reflection of the mirror. The fog begins to clear a little more and the room could be described as a fairly upper middle class home. Like many bathrooms, the decor was decorated with light colors giving the scene a feeling of happiness. These white colors include white, tan, and yellow. The tan and yellow show give the bathroom a warmer feeling to indicate it most likely is in the home of a family. The woman has white skin with a hint of olive tone, hazel green eyes, pink lips, and blonde hair. Although the main focal point of the ad has been the shampoo bottle, the woman is now stealing the spot light. This is due to the camera maintaining focus on her instead of the generic shampoo bottle.

0:06-0:09

The scene switched to a young girl, most likely in her early teens. She seemed to be in a bathroom, much like the scene before, but the other woman was no where to be found and the room was not foggy from mist much like the previous one. The camera then shifted downward toward the sink in front of her. On the sink the shampoo bottle from earlier in the ad was clearly visible. While the camera focuses on the bottle, the girl applies some form of lipstick or lip-gloss to her lips. most people who wear lip-gloss are around their teens, supporting the argument that she was of early teenage years.

0:10-0:13

The next scene also shows a bathroom, but this time the tub instead of the sink. In this tub is a very innocent looking Caucasian baby presumably taking a bath. Although the boy is in focus, behind him is a toy duck. Most likely a  toy for the young boy’s bath. The camera focus then moves from the boy to the duck; suddenly a hand put the same yellow shampoo bottle next to the duck. The camera then switched to in front of the boy’s face and he rubbed his face from top to bottom and sticks out his tongue. The boy seemed very happy. He seemed to be in the same bathroom as the woman and the girl from earlier. This observation supports the idea that an upper middle class family resided in this home.

0:14-0:19

Two shampoo bottles were on the sink with the window open. The curtains were blowing indicating a draft. One bottle begins to flicker and falls over. Unless the wind was very powerful and could selectively chose what to push, this entails the bottle is empty. The camera angel switched to above the fallen bottle and reveals a recycling sign. The recycling logo was focused on indicating this is a main focal point of the aid. A woman’s hand then picked it up and threw it into the typical blue recycling bin with a white recycling sin. The scene then faded to black.

0:20-0:30

The scene faded in revealing a white synthetic bristle brush with a black recycling sign on the middle of it. A hand then grabbed the brush, and a woman and her teen daughter were talking. The woman was standing and brushing her daughters hair, while the daughter sat. They seemed to be excited for whatever plans they had, because the daughter was in a lavender dress with a single pearl necklace, and the mother had an orange dress with a black cardigan. Then the daughter randomly laughed. The mother must have said something funny. The scene then switches to the comb on a desk and the screen fades to black once again. The continual return to the items with the recycling logo on them supports the claim that this ad was meant to advocate for recycling on a daily basis. Most people in the United states are middle class, so having two different families from different cultural backgrounds doing the same thing helps everyone relate.

Missing dollar- Princess272

In solving the missing dollar paradox, my brain began in a scramble. I did not even realize the dollar was missing until it was pointed out to me. My brain scrambled around that thought for a moment. Then I realized, the answer was as clear as my first thought. Without it being mentioned, the dollar was not missing. By working backwards you can see the dollars were distributed correctly. The way the riddle states it cause the reader to confuse his or her self.

Princess272-Proposal

For my research essay, I will be investigating the advantageous possible uses of stem cells within the modern society. Although the research has been stigmatized due to a few misconceptions, they have many beneficial uses.

These cells are non-specified cells that can be programmed to become any type of cell. This is favorable in modern society specifically due to the fact that in the human body, organs go bad, or they were defective to begin with. These organs can be replaced using surgical means, but the amount of transplatable organs available is much lower than that of those who need them. By using stem cells, organs such as the heart or lung can be grown and transplanted into an individuals body. Stem cells also have the ability to cure certain diseases that are caused by stimuli on the cellular level. These diseases include Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Heart diseases, type 1 diabetes, etc.

Human stem cells can be found in more places than aborted fetuses. They are located in the placenta, blood of the placenta, and blastocysts (fertilized human eggs outside of the womb). This misconception has caused the magnitude of research to be overlooked due to the immoral aspect of this science. By the definition of the anti stem cell movement, this would not be “man trying to play God”, but instead, man saving another mans life and improving another’s living quality.

E03: Critical Reading-Princess272

“IS PTSD CONTAGIOUS”

“Sometimes I can’t do the laundry,” Brannan explains, reclining on her couch.

  • Brannan is unable to do laundry for some reason.
  • She may not be physically able to do so, or she may not want to do so.
  • She reclined in her chair indicating she is comfortable and at ease.

“And it’s not like, ‘Oh, I’m too tired to do the laundry,’ it’s like, ‘Um, I don’t understand how to turn the washing machine on.’ I am looking at a washing machine and a pile of laundry and my brain is literally overwhelmed by trying to figure out how to reconcile them.”

  • Brannan’s brain is overwhelmed by attempting to do normal day to day tasks such as doing her laundry.
  • Normal efforts that are normally routine are difficult for her.
  • She could be suffering from a number of neurological diseases ( Alzheimer’s disease, PTSD, etc.), or she has a physical handy-cap that prevents her from doing such things.
  • Brannan isn’t too lazy or physically incapable of doing her laundry.
  • Her mind isn’t blank when she attempts to use the laundry machine indicating it is not some sort of  Alzheimer’s Disease she is dealing with.

She sounds like she might start crying, not because she is, but because that’s how she always sounds, like she’s talking from the top of a clenched throat, tonally shaky and thin.

  • Brannan’s voice may be shaky and unsure. The author didn’t mention her eyes watering, so she may not appear to be crying just the tone of her voice seems to resemble that of a person crying.
  • The fact that shes ready to cry may indicate that she is unsure of herself or is upset about the incident.
  • The author continues and states that’s how she always sounds.
  • Which plants the idea that she may always feel uneasy about her surroundings.
  • Since her voice is shaky and thin, she may feel frightened, much like that of a person who has PTSD.

She looks relaxed for the moment, though, the sun shining through the windows onto her face in this lovely leafy suburb.

  • There are moments when she is not tense and frightened.
  • She enjoys the sun and it sets her at ease, much like a place of escape.
  • Her symptoms seem to be that of an individual who has gone through something traumatic, or that of someone that is new to living in a bad part of town.
  • Since her home and neighborhood was mentioned as a “lovely leafy suburb” it has been established that she does not live in a dangerous city, much like Camden or Trenton, but rather a safe suburb much like Cherry Hill or Glassboro.

We raise the blinds in the afternoons, but only if we are alone. When we hear Caleb pulling back in the driveway, we jump up and grab their strings, plunging the living room back into its usual necessary darkness.

  • Brannan starts the statement off as we indicating besides her and the man mentioned later in the sentence (caleb) someone else lives there. This person may be a child or a family member.
  • Brannan enjoys the sunlight shining on her face, but she can only do so when she is not accompanied by Caleb.
  • Caleb is most likely her significant other.
  • Caleb likes it dark in the house, this a warning sign of an individual with PTSD.
  • This type of darkness is usual inside of Caleb and Brannan’s house.
  • By Brannan making sure that the blinds are closed when Caleb gets home, something bad must have happened when he is home and they’re not closed.
  • He may have had a mental breakdown, got physical with his family and caused some form of domestic violence, or he could have had a flash back of some traumatic situation from a previous date.

Money rewrite- Princess272

Mind Over Money

Money is what makes the world go round; it is a valuable item that is worth so much since there is only a finite amount of it circulating. This idea has never been challenged in my mind until reading the various articles pertaining to this subject. Now, as if a one way window were destroyed in front of me, I am able to see the truth on the other side. Money having worth is a figment of the human imagination.

The people of Yap use gargantuan limestone boulders as money, which quite frankly sounded completely ludicrous to me. Money in my mind should always be able to be carried with you. The fact that there are gigantic pieces of money in their society baffled me, but once compared to our money in the U.S., my mindset began to skew from left to right. Our money can be represented through paper checks, plastic cards, and a special material we call bills. They leave large pieces of limestone at different locations and use them as a bartering tool just as we use paper, plastic, and bills. The paper and plastic of which Americans use as bartering tools are not actual forms of money. They are a gateway to using the money without it actually being present on the individuals person. This is much like the Yap’s and their gigantic limestone boulders located at various different locations around the island.

The people of Yap still have their limited number of limestone they consider precious to regulate how much the stone is worth for use of bartering, but American money is a little different. Gold originally was used as a bartering tool by many Western countries and later was represented by the bills we know today. The bills today however do not represent gold. This idea is very similar to that of Brazil. Brazil came up with this idea, because they had an inflation epidemic. The way used to correct the inflation issue was in fact genius. Using the legitimacy of the country to back the currency was clever, because the government did not need to worry about finding gold or limestone, but rather just focus on amount of money being exchanged. This showed me that money can be backed by anything as long as that anything had value. A country is a great example such a thing of great value.

Money does not have value because it just does like many people believe, but rather because everyone wants it. This idea can be translated to one of the newest forms of currency today, the bitcoin. Bitcoins still to this day do not make sense to me. It’s a made up currency not connected to any government or backed by gold. It is literally just a form of currency people agreed upon to barter created by an individual. For Places like Brazil or America to back their currency by their country made enough sense to not question it too much, but the thought that a legitimate form of currency could come from nothing with but an idea is insane.

Money is for lack of a better phrase, a figment of our imaginations. It only has value because everyone wants it. If no one wanted money, everyone would barter using another item or items. A million dollars is only valuable because everyone else in this country wants it to. If everyone had a million dollars, no one would think it was significant or strive for it for that matter. Due to this fact, the concept of currency having value only because people want it, is very unsettling. Any boat that can be tipped that easily is not a good one and should be replaced.

Summaries-Princess272

It seems counter-intuitive that a government would give its citizens heroin for free. Heroin in many countries is taboo to the extent that it is not only illegal but frowned upon. Governments tend to reprimand individuals who use illegal drugs, but not Vancouver. Vancouver is giving heroin to it’s addicts for free.

Vancouver has had a history with drug related crime for years due to the vast amount of heroin addicts present in the city. Initially, a safe zone was instilled for addicts were they could use heroin with the supervision of a nurse without the threat of being arrested. This place is known as Insite. Here they give them clean syringes, antiseptic wipes, and other equipment that makes taking heroin a bit safer.

Now, instead of just giving someone instruments for heroin use, in extreme cases they distribute heroin to them for free as well. This counter-intuitive idea is not for everyone. Currently only 26 people in Vancouver are given heroin due to their inability of their bodies to take to the heroin alternatives being studied and the heroin must be prescribed by a doctor.

By giving these individuals heroin and a place to use it, this program is a form of harm reduction. Drug users are synonymous with  crime such as armed robbery, breaking and entering, sex trafficking, etc. This is due to the physiological and physical dependency on the drug. By giving them a place to use the drug, the instruments, and the drug itself.

Although at first glance the program Insite is absurd, after learning about the good it is capable of as far as the community is concerned, it is exactly what the city needs. By eliminating the reason a group of people commit crime and giving them what their body is hooked on so they will not die, is killing two birds with one stone.
