Definition Argument – BTB100

The United States has been known for helping out foreign countries in a time of need, starting back to the first World War. But when it comes to war should we rethink the idea of helping out a country or go in with no hesitations. For when doing so there maybe repercussions for our acts, and worry more towards the protection of our own people before strategizing a plan to save other countries people. A question our government should ask themselves about foreign affairs is what US should get involved in and what they should leave up to the United Nations or other countries to intervene with.

The threats we receive from terrorist attacks should be our governments top concern , countries that are helping out the issue in Syria and bringing in some of the people of Syria are being hit by terrorist attacks. The US has been involved with many problems due to terrorists. People fear that their lives may be at risk, if The US is aware of the risks they put on there own people should they still get involved or let others step in and US just give help.

Elected president Donald Trump has implanted his ideas of Syrian refugees and decided to take our men out or there and close off the gates for letting these Syrians in. Saying that there are already many other countries getting involved with this crisis who have a strong handle on the situation. Also by getting involved we’d open up the doors to much bigger problems such as dealing with Russia. Which Trump goes on to say in The New York Times, “We end up fighting Russia, fighting Syria.” Now by doing so not only are we letting in refugees that we clearly have no idea who we are but also would be going to war with another country just because of our beliefs on society and how these Syrians should be treated.  All that has happen by getting involved with these Syrian refugees should convince the government that the people of America need to be safe and let others intervene and stay out of this disaster.

Since 9/11 there has been a significant amount of refugees that the US has let in. In an article By Russell Berman in the Atlantic, he asks the question of can isis ruin the refugee program, through out the article he claims that “And within that population, three people have been arrested for activities related to terrorism. None of them were close to executing an attack inside the U.S., and two of the men were caught trying to leave the country to join terrorist groups overseas.” Even though those do not seem like giant numbers you have to look at it in a different perspective that if they were caught doing a terrorist acts there are many more of them out there who may not have been caught. As well as we don’t have a perfect government as does no one else which leads to asking that there are many more groups of people creating an ideas of terroristic attacks who have yet to been caught, even though we may not find them the only way to prevent future attacks is by not letting in future refugees.

A giant problem that countries letting in refugees have to figure out is the fake passports for allowing these Syrians into the countries. After the bombing in Paris the French had found a the passports of the bombers and they had no information of this man ever being allowed into the country. “The fingerprint was not in the French database, the senator said, and therefore officials believe the man was among a group of refugees and migrants.” France could have prevented this tragic accident from happening, the US should learn from there mistakes and realize many people in France who very hurt by this attack. Protect there people and do whatever it needs to ensure the safety of the people and one way to ensure that is by cutting off the borders to these refugees.

White Paper – BTB100

Hypothesis: By being involved in foreign affair we are opening up ourselves to having our national security attacked. Which leaves us wondering is it better to leave us out of other countries problems and have them face the problem to protect ourselves and our people.

In Syria there are many problems going on such as terroristic attacks as well as the people wanting a new face of the government. The US has had a long history with helping out with foreign countries and ending up going to war after so why risk our people when we can stay out of it and keep our citizens safe

Some problems that can occur by getting involved

  • Going to war
  • Having these terrorist go after us
  • Bring in harmful people to the country
  • Causes more problems in our country
  • We have many problems with getting involved with foreign affairs
  • We would be responsible for housing these people
  • Not sure who is coming in what harm they bring
  • Already have other problems too worry about rather than the safety of other countries

The only reason US would really get involved is to show off that they are still a powerhouse in terms of military strength and to just improve their economics, because getting involved in war has been known to bolster one’s economy.

Hypothesis 1:

We already have problems with being attacked by terrorists in the past recent years that have devastated many american lives and still to this day are trying to figure out a way to prevent these actions, why would we get involved with others problems that may lead to another attack from terrorists due to the threats that they feel are coming.

I believe that we should mind our own business and should figure out how to fix our own problems since there are many other big issues to deal with before we go cause more problems, if we really feel the need to have a helping hand maybe we ask a country who has all there stuff together to help them out in return for a reward or a deal.

Cause/effect

  • Get involved, chance the possibility of being attacked
  • Don’t get involved, we can fix other issues and cause less stress and worry for the people of America
  • Don’t allow these people to come in, protect our people from some of the nasty people who would bring in the sick ways to hurt our people

Definition/Class

A flaw could be if a country really needs our help and we don’t get involved how could it affect the rest of the world and would it show that the US isn’t a powerhouse like they used to be.

  1. I feel I have made good progress just need to have a little more ideas to help prove my point and clarify my argument. I have many quotes on government ideas of being involved with foreign affairs as well as the people. So i believe I have some good info just need to bring it all together.

Polio Notes – BTB100

  • 250 kids will have to be handicapped
  • only 4 countries still have polio
  • others believe in putting time into other disease
  • kills and cripples 1 in 200
  • everyone would need to get a shot to help kill disease
  • affects child mostly

I believe polio is something that wont be gone in the next 20 years, to cure something like this in really such a short time it would you to require get all the countries in the world involved. Without having all the countries involved that still leaves the chance for that one country who doesn’t get involved still leaves them the chance to be effected by this. In my beliefs we wont be able to get rid of polio in the next 20 years

Safer Saws – BTB10

1 . Manufacturer

In the STATEMENT OF CHAIRMAN INEZ M. TENENBAUM Moreover, this agency, under my leadership, is firmly committed to exploring how to prevent these kinds of injuries from continuing to occur.

  • He is considering making saws safer
  • Will look into other possibilities to make saws safe
  • He personally will try to make a difference in saws

  1. Customers

In the article If Table Saws Can Be Safer, Why Aren’t They?, I found out that table saws cause thousands of these really horrible injuries every year. This inventor, a guy named Steve Gass, had actually figured out a way to prevent just about all of those accidents. Over the years, he’s proved that it works, too.

  • If saw stops can offer extra protection then they should be put on
  • Thinks Steve’s idea is brilliant
  • If he proved it works then why not put it on

  1. Industry Spokespeople

“They came back and said, ‘Well, we’ve looked at it, but we’re not interested because safety doesn’t sell,”

  • They gave this idea a chance but didn’t go through with it
  • They believe safety doesn’t always sell
  • Safety might be a help but in some cases it won’t help them bring in the money

4 Consumer safety Advocates

Based on the injury data obtained in the 2007 and 2008 CPSC special study, our staff’s injury cost model projected that consumers suffered approximately 67,300 medically treated blade contact injuries annually in 2007 and 2008—with an associated injury cost of $2.36 billion dollars in each of those two years.

  • Here they are claiming that many injuries occur while using table saws. If there was the automatic break this issue would never occur. They are trying to prove here that many do get hurt from table saws, and it’s not a matter of just a little portion who are getting hurt, many of them are. By having the automatic stop all these injuries would have been prevented.
  • They are claiming by having this saw stop those 67,000 people who needed to get medical treatment would have been not harmed if there was this saw stop attached.

5 Injured plaintiff.

In the article Injured Man Says Bosch Tool Lobbied Feds to Keep Safer Power Saws off the Market, He claims that the inventor of the flesh detection brake offered Bosch a licensing agreement in 2000 during a Power Tool Institute meeting, but Bosch rejected the offer.

  • Wec claims that if Bosch would have agreed with Flesh detection brake he would have never been injured.
  • If he knew they didn’t agree with they brake company why would he not go to other saw companies to buy a safer saw?

6 Personal Injury Lawyer

in the article Table Saw Injury Lawyer Now,  these manufacturers are facing dozens of lawsuits brought forth by people  whose injuries could have been prevented had Saw Stop or similar safety mechanisms been in place.

  • Here lawyers are saying that by not having this saw stop blade companies can face major lawsuits, just because they refuse to put in simple equipment they now face lawyers.
  • So is it really worth going to court over putting a sawstop on your equipment if it can prevent injuries.

7 Government Officials

In the article Bosch Tools Saw Stop Lawsuit,  What came next is a bit of controversy as Gass attempted to pursue legislation to make his patented technology mandatory through the Consumer Protection Safety Commission, apparently after receiving little support for his proposal to license the technology to manufacturers.

  • Legislation believed it wasn’t necessary to have this saw stop on it, they saw no need in it.
  • Gass has little support on his idea, so few believe but a majority didn’t
  • His persuasion and attempt of getting saw stop didn’t work.

  1. News Reporter                                                                                                                                    In the article If table saws can be safer, why aren’t they, The National Consumers League last month brought in injured woodworkers to meet with lawmakers and regulators. They want to make the Saw Stop safety brake mandatory on all table saws.

  • Here they want to make it a rule that puts this stop saw on all table saw products.
  • They believe by putting in a few extra dollars into a product is worth saving a finger
  • What is worth more losing a finger or paying more money for extra protection
  • They believe showing some past injuries will help make a law.
  • Is the only way they can help pass this law is by bringing in injured saw users to help support there argument.

The ad starts as a mail lady walking to a house with mail in her hand looking as if she is about to drop some mail off to the door. The mail lady seems happy and enjoys her job. As she walks to a house something continues to catch her eye and she takes a look. The look of the neighborhood is very nice and as if they live in a middle class town.

0:03

The angle of the camera changes almost to a first person perspective and looks like the mail lady is looking at a grown man flexing his arms. By the first glance of the man he looks strong but also tough around the edges, he looks like he works due to the first glance we get of him flexing his arm. So he might enjoy showing off his muscles. By the look and impression we get of the man it seems as if there was someone else in the room with him. But due to only getting a quick glimpse we were only able to see the man in the window.

0:04

The angle of the camera is again being pointed back to the mail lady, she looks very impressed with what she saw in the window. Believes the man in the window is a good, and caring person. We as the viewers get a good impression that the man in the window is a nice person.

0:05-0:06

Its goes to now being in the room with the man still flexing his arms, but now he is singing as well a child song which makes you believe that he is a father singing to his little baby. He has a smile on his face which shows he enjoys time with his kid. We get the idea that he cherishes his little kid, but there is no mom there so which makes me think the father wants to always be around his daughter due to the fact that there is no mom.

0:07

The angle of the camera is now behind the mail lady so we get a look of the mail lady and the window with the man still being seen, as he is doing a little dance now still with his arms flexing in the air. The mail lady notices the father who seems and gives us this tough guy impression showing a little soft side to him, which gives us the intent of knowing what this kid means to him and the mail lady still watching shows that there is much joy in the house.

0:08

We are now in the room with the grown man as he is now dancing and singing. It looks again as if someone else is in the room with him and based off the tone of the song I would still guess it was his kid. By the tone I would also guess that it is a girl.

0:09

the camera goes back to facing the mail lady and she has a grin on her face as if she is very happy and impressed with what she saw. Her emotion on her face shows that the man in the room is a good guy doing a good thing.

0:10 – 0:11

the camera is now on a little girl in a pink dress her body is in the same position as her dad which show that they are doing a routine. The girl is singing along with what would be her dad, her face shows that she is really enjoying what going on, her tone of her voice seems very happy. This is something that I would believe her and her dad do a lot because they both seem to know what the were singing. But again still no mom in the picture which keeps me thinking that he is a single father who is trying to be in his daughter’s life as much as possible and helping her enjoy her childhood.

0:12 – 0:17

The camera is viewing both the girl and her father as they are singing a tea pot song and enjoying time with each other, as the continue singing you can tell that they are living in a nice house seems to have a lot of toys and well furnished room. They continue to sing as they both drop to the floor and end singing the song.

0:18 – 0:21

The angle of the camera goes to just the girl as she pretends to pour tea into her cup. She has a good imagination and seemed to be having fun with her dad. The camera is just viewed on her to focus on her emotions and she seems to be happy.

0:22 – 0:31

The camera goes to both the father and daughter as they are both on the floor pretending to drink tea. A voice narrated in the background is saying that a father is something important in every girls life, that fathers should be there for daughter. So that explains all the time the father and daughter spent together, as well as the father showing an almost weaker side of him to help his daughter have fun. They daughter had a smile on her face the whole time as well as the dad did.

Open Strong – BTB100

Many people believe in lending a helping hand, until their lives get threatened. In today’s society many countries are getting involved with foreign affairs not realizing what negative outcomes come out by helping. The US, as well as a few other countries, are well known for lending help from wars to economic stability. But on the other side there are many enemies facing a problem as well, the help of foreign affairs. Which leaves us asking should we get involved when it chances the American lives and threatening so many innocents life. When we see a friend struggle we feel bad and wish we could help and in fact may even help. But when you see Syria struggle The US want to help but when we see terrorist involvement is involved it leaves us thinking should we help or stick out of it to prevent an attack on our own national security. In today’s world many 3rd world countries and powerhouse countries fear from the threats of terrorist attacks. Many ask why these threats are happening, but when you look at it many of these attacks happen by getting involved with foreign affairs.

A05: Proposal – BTB100

For my research I will be examining the hypothesis that involvement of foreign affairs and how it starts more wars rather then prevent wars. While many countries believe lending a helping hand may create a better world, it actually causes more problems with the world in terms of threats and creating a war.

While researching the involvement of foreign affairs I found that more problems occurred when foreign countries started getting involved with a problem. The UN was created to decrease problems but really, them being involved just creates higher tension with in themselves and leads to bigger problems, such as terrorist attacks or even going to war.

Syria: The story of the conflict

The Essential Content of the Article:  shows us what was going on in Syria the problem people had with the government and how a war broke out, the advantage that terrorists take from the people in a state of emergency. What foreign countries do to lend a helping hand, and how they affect the people of their own country.

What it Proves: what this proves is that risks do happen in helping others out, many should think about there own people before helping others.

Germany’s real problem with refugees

The Essential Content of the Article: This shows us the problem of lending a hand with foreign countries and allowing these Syrians to come into the country, they would bring there ways with them such as assaulting people and creating many problems.

What it Proves: What this proves is that lending a hand just may seem like the right decision but there are many after effects that can be caused by helping others in a time of need. Your people may get hurt and threatened, all because you want to help.

Why ISIS threatens the U.S.—and what we can do about it

The Essential Content of the Article: This shows us that even by handling a hand to help some innocent people out, the enemy could be feel endangered and show signs of anger by doing an attack to warn us off. By helping out a friend we could get attacked and have our own citizens hurt.

What it Proves: This proves that we should think about ourselves and our people before getting involved with foreign affairs that we have no conflicts in, because at the end of the day our people might be getting hurt.

Syria’s civil war: US to send extra military personnel

The Essential Content of the Article: This shows us that we are taking our own people out of USA to another country that we should have no affiliation with or get involved with, sending our soldiers and risking their lives for the better of the Syria.

What it Proves: This proves that we are willing to risk our own soldiers to send them into foreign affairs and risk their lives, instead of keeping them with their families safe.

Who’s Fighting Who In Syria

The Essential Content of the Article: this shows us everyone who is involved there affiliation with this civil war, what actions they are taking, and there reason of getting involved.

What it Proves: This proves that many countries got involved for different reasons whether it was for economic reason, better for the world, or just to cause chaos. All got involved for their own belief, for a better world for themselves.

E03 – Critical Reading – BTB100

It’s kind of hard to understand Caleb’s injuries. Even doctors can’t say for sure exactly why he has flashbacks, why he could be standing in a bookstore when all of a sudden he’s sure he’s in Ramadi, the pictures in his brain disorienting him among the stacks, which could turn from stacks to rows of rooftops that need to be scanned for snipers.

  1. Diagnosing someone with PTSD is something hard to decide.
  2. Doctors have no idea what to diagnose Caleb.
  3. What causes these flashbacks is it something he hears or sees?
  4. The doctors aren’t even sure what Caleb has so how can they accuse the family of having PTSD.
  5. Maybe all those shocking and life changing scenes that he witnessed bring back bad memories that cause him to react like that.
  6. Places that he is in or little images he may see in his surroundings flash back to the times he was in war
  7. Pictures or books may remind him of his time at war and being at the bookstore may remind him of his past.

Sometimes he starts yelling, and often he doesn’t remember anything about it later.

  1. PTSD cause lots of problems and maybe yelling is a reaction to him visualizing a flashback.
  2. He gets so caught up in his flashbacks that he doesn’t even remember why he was yelling.

They don’t know exactly why it comes to him in dreams, and why especially that time he picked up the pieces of Baghdad bombing victims and that lady who appeared to have thrown herself on top of her child to save him only to find the child dead underneath torments him when he’s sleeping, and sometimes awake.

  1. These flashbacks of war could be on his mind all the time so, it is the last thing he thinks of before he goes to sleep.
  2. A time in Baghdad could have been a sad point in his life witnessing all these deaths and having it live with him all of his life.
  3. These horrible scenes that he has seen like the death of a child is something most people never witness and just being around something like that can make him have nightmares and relive that moment.

They don’t know why some other guys in his unit who did and saw the same stuff that Caleb did and saw are fine but Caleb is so sensitive to light, why he can’t just watch the news like a regular person without feeling as if he might catch fire.

  1. People react to terrible scenarios differently
  2. The way each soldier was grown up could have been different
  3. There emotional side could play a big part in how they react to these events.
  4. Caleb could have different views on war and what they should be like.
  5. Caleb might not have known what to expect when he went to war and those things he viewed could have harmed him in a mental way.
  6. Updates on news might bring back some images he might have seen while he was at war, and they aren’t pleasant thoughts going on in his mind.

Some hypotheses for why PTSD only tortures some trauma victims blame it on unhappily coded proteins, or a misbehaving amygdala. Family history, or maybe previous trauma.

  1. Are bad proteins the blame for PTSD?
  2. Is it you’re born with these proteins and you’re waiting for something to trigger it to go off like going to war?
  3. Does it come from a family tree with long history of PTSD, or just many actions that happen that eventually lead up to PTSD.

Stone Money Rewrite – BTB100

What is Money Really Worth

The value of money is just what one may believe the monetary value of it is worth. A rock for a good, money for an island was based off a stone that people couldn’t physically hold but  were able to trade and this was based off a german colonized island called Yaps. This island value of money was based off a large stone which was never moved or was touched just left there and had different owners. Based off exchanges and trades made the stone would have a different owner. “They often talk about the stones themselves not changing hands at all, “Fitzpatrick says. “In fact, most of the time they wouldn’t.” No matter where the money lied on the island it was yours. They even had an occasion where the stone had fallen off a man boat and laid at the bottom of the ocean, and the people of the island still agreed the stone had value to it. The Yaps never had a different system of money and they believed that their system worked they knew what stone they owned and how much it was worth during and exchange and never saw a problem so they kept with their logic. While in the U.S they used money as a monetary value for gold. France felt as if the value of money would fade and that France wanted there money in gold. U.S bank if New York just placed the gold aside and had it labeled for France. As time went on Frances banks increased while U.S banks collapsed which cause a major problem in the economy. Frances power of money increased while U.S drops even though France didn’t have physical possession of the gold or no where near them, meanwhile the gold is just sitting in a U.S vault while the U.S suffers but they can’t use the gold because it technically not theirs.

For me I believe I should have possession of my money, if I wanted to make an exchange for a M&M I would want to be able to hold my side up which would be providing the money, be given the M&M I need to complete the transaction. I wouldn’t want to be like my horse is down the street but it is yours now. I would want to be able to show the horse in exchange to to buy the M&M. I would also want it to be the other way around, if someone is trying to buy a product off me such as milk I would want the money while the exchange is happening for my milk. In today’s world people don’t even carry money on them, they just have a digital showing of how much money they have in the bank by an app on there phone or a bank statement almost as if they have a stone at the end of their street that is theres but have no real possession of it and just claims that there stone is worth a gallon of milk. Most people don’t care too much about having the hard cash on them as long as they look into there bank account and see the money rise they are satisfied, which is something I don’t like. People today are paying in stone and credit cards and the seller could have no idea if the person really even has the stone to make an exchange but they could care less as long as they see something in exchange that could help validate that the person may or may not have the money. Today’s world the dollar is only worth what one believes it is worth. Money can be represented as a bolder and if I believe that the bolder is worth a gallon of milk and so does the man on the other side of the exchange then we both can agree on it, we can make the exchange and I could get my gallon of milk. Money’s worth as much as. The bolder can only be worth as much as the next person in line is willing to trade for it, that bolder can buy one gallon for one store but if we go down the street that same exact bolder can get 3 gallons of milk. Value of money can only be inherited to one’s belief of how much a dollar should be worth.

While in Brazil they were having problems with inflation of money and keeping a stabilized economy. No one was able to figure out what was causing this inflation but it caused the people of Brazil to spend money instead of saving it due to the prices raising everyday. Then four economists, and they went on and had to create fake currency called URV. They believed people of Brazil needed to regain hope in the faith of a stable cruzeiro, and believed the URV was the thing to trigger a more stable economy. “But, just as important, you have to stabilize people’s faith in money itself.  People have to be tricked into thinking money will hold its value.” They went on to change all cruzeiro into URV, such as wages, taxes and food. By doing so whatever the inflation rate of a given item was the URV would stabilize it so that there was no inflation. The people in Brazil were using fake money that really meant nothing to them. Since it brought down the inflation of the economy no one cared and just brought happiness back to the people of Brazil.

The physical property of money means nothing to people as one can see from Brazil. The people of Brazil were able to be tricked into believing in a system of money that was fake and really was worth nothing. Just by what Brazil did you can tell what the real thoughts of money means to the people of Brazil. They believed in having a physical property that met the demand of a need. The economy in Brazil used to be like chasing a tail just as you thought the price of your chips would stay stable and at the same price it would just raise, so the people would almost be chasing the tail of chips trying to get ahead of it so that they could get as much as they can for as little price as they can. This is what forced the economics to create this fake value of money called URV, so they could help the people afford chips at the low price. People believed this would be a good idea in this type of need happiness to me comes from money because there are so many things you can do with it such as travel and buy nice and fancy stuff and just be able to enjoy some aspects of life that many aren’t able to do. But when you have to worry about spending your money because prices will increase. Value of money to them meant nothing they were able to trade invisible money just like a rock across the town for there chips. That value of money was able to restore the economy of Brazil at such a quick rate which proved that the value of money means nothing to a whole, but more to the individual trying to get that bag of chips for the lowest amount of rocks possible.
