  3. It’s important to find sources that can both prove and disprove your thesis.
Google scholar is a great source to find journals and articles to use in your paper.
(the library link at rowan.edu will take you to more search databases you can also use, personal favorite is academic search complete: really easy to use)
Access to some articles might ask you to pay for them, try looking through Rowan’s databases first before giving up on the source.
You don’t want all your sources to agree with you, you want to persuade the reader to come to that conclusion themselves.
Consider different arguments when facing your topic.

    -negative celebrity endorsement
-Make a new observation of your own.
    – when you cant pay for your article, go to the rowan Campbell library and plug the title into the search bar.
-Use wiki to your best ability, but its not a credible source.
-phrase questions to get the proper article you’re looking for.
-search for animal training abuse, it doesn’t matter if it has to do with the abuse of your actual animal.
-it’ll be useful for the case.
-don’t look for a direct hit with nothing new to add.
-don’t use articles you completely agree with
-By Sunday provide 3 academic sources out of 5.

  5. -There are several practical methods to help gather research.
-Do not look for research in the “obvious” place.
-Do not look for direct testimony.
-You don’t want to find an article that agrees with you directly, since it is not your genuine idea.
-Google Scholar is a useful tool to use.
-Look for scholarly support for the idea but not a direct reflection of your thesis.
    -Do not pay for resources.
-If Google Scholar does not offer for free, enter title into Rowan’s Campbell Library website.
-There is an abundance of information available through Rowan’s database.
-Listen for researchable topics that are not immediately named in your thesis.
-Read about the value of the argument from a positive and negative standpoint.
-Apply evidence from an outside topic to your specific thesis.
-Wikipedia is valuable to start research, since it lists its sources.
-Be sure to maintain a clinical perspective with your topic.

If all you got from class was the advice to talk about your thesis, you’ve picked up something very valuable. Nothing makes us examine our own ideas (Nothing makes us HAVE ideas!) better than expressing them to someone else.

  7. Find sources that are effective and something that surprises you. Don’t just get sources that support your thesis. Think or talk to someone else about your thesis until questions start to come up that can be researched by something other than your topic. if you can’t find an article online for free go to Rowan’s Campbell Library. Search and see if they have it online. Read about the positive and negative sides of your topic.
Use Google Scholar to help with looking for articles.

  8. What to do when there are no sources for a thesis.
Do not pick articles that just supports your thesis, and write yours based on someone elses articles.
Make sure to read both sides of the argument to make our writing more rich.

Use topics that can support/debate the topic you are talking about, it just has to apply to your article. Articles need to be applied to your writing not the other way around, because we are creating the topic.

Use Google Scholar or Rowan Library to get reliable information. And most times its free.

Gaming, I guess if you begin your research thinking there are two sides, then the primary value of reading “both sides” is to alert you to the possible refutations for your argument. If that’s your plan, you will certainly benefit from using strong refutation as your primary tactic. The “other side” knows what it believes, and will give you no credit at all for your own position if it thinks its own is sound and irrefutable. To get their attention and respect, you need to proactively diminish their evidence rather than ignore it.

  9. Finding a good topic for the research paper is extremely important.
Being able to relate or fully understand the topic is very beneficial.
Figuring out the right angle to roll with makes the paper easier to write.
The thesis is one of the most important parts of the paper, it shows what the point of the paper is.
Having a good thesis will effect the quality of the paper.
Finding sources is the second most important part of the paper, being able to back your point up is great but the thesis and angle is what to focus on.
For the most part you can find a ton of resources on the topic.
Google scholar is a great program that can help you right your paper.
Having good examples benefits a paper.
    Always have a work cited.
Google/ Wikipedia are good sources but you must be careful, can not use as a primary source.

I know you attended class, Killroy, but I would not have guessed it from the first half of your Notes. Either you hear things I don’t say, or you so completely synthesize my remarks with your own thinking that you invent a new lecture in your head. I’m not being critical, just marveling at how differently things echo back from you. I look forward to seeing your first five sources. We’ll learn a lot about whether the narrow thesis you select will be supportable.

It won’t be easy to relive the class meeting, CollegeGirl, but if you do try to replicate the Notes you took in class that day and post them after the fact, I’ll ignore the posting date and credit you with attendance. Did you find Google Scholar useful? We could chat about the search terms you’re using and whether they deliver good results.

“Talked about” language is no more useful in Notes than it is in Purposeful Summaries, Intern. Sure we talked about where to look for sources. But mostly we talked about how to search for sources. To be really useful, your Notes should remind you of the techniques you think would be most helpful.

I’ll be alert for your new thesis. If you’d like to have a 5-minute conversation about it before you go searching for sources, I’d be happy to help you. My skype account name and phone numbers are available in the Syllabus. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

  13. Research tips:
Don’t look for articles in the wrong place. Change the search name or target. Fore example, my topic on how “live remix based performance DJ’s deserve as much praise as production based DJ’s”, My search would be something like “music innovation in live performance”.
Using Google Scholar and the main concept idea of your thesis in the search will give you solid background information for research. Also, use the Rowan Library’s resources to your advantage. Rowan’s library gives you access to sources without having to pay extra.
Make sure this argument has not already been made. Jon’t list a bunch of people that have made the same argument that you have done in your paper.

Your notes aren’t “complete,” Anonymous, but they are functional. They are good reminders of the best rules of research, for you, from the material this morning.

I’m worried that the Notes are attributed to ANONYMOUS. That shouldn’t be. Something is not right about the way you’ve logged in. WordPress doesn’t recognize you. If you make this mistake when posting, I won’t be able to find your work, and it will appear that you haven’t submitted assignments. We need to figure out why this is happening so you can pass the class. Please investigate and share your findings with me.

Good to see you’ve made an appointment, NewEdition. One caution about a Note I see above. 5 Sources are due Sunday. 3 of them need to be Academic Sources. All of them can be, but no fewer than 3.

  15. Comp 2 Notes 10/11/17

Research tips for the five primary sources
    Google Scholar
    Rowan Library service
A blend of sources is required for academic writing
DO not rely on popular news as primary or sole sources
We need to practice academic source values
There are no sources to prove your thesis because it is something that you will have to do yourself.
Best (worst) outcome for the process
Somebody is agreeing with my through their source to support my thesis
Somebody already wrote about it, and I am just echoing their ideas
I “would” be parroting their thesis and paper.
    What you should do
talk about your thesis until you raise the questions that can be researched by something other than searching what you want (it seems counterintuitive)
    Celebrity endorsement
This had nothing to do with the topic, just shows how far people will go to unattached themselves from popular opinion
What happens when I can’t use Google scholar
Go to the Rowan Campbell Library page.
Plug the title in and see what comes up
One word in a source in google scholar can lead to a great source in the Campbell Library database
Wikipedia can be useful, but not as a primary source
Use sites like google and wikipedia to help broaden your search, so you can narrow it down again
Read about the value of both positive and negative celebrity endorsement
Phrasing your searches right is the key!

That’s beautifully said, Admiral. It’s counterintuitive that the best research method is to search for something OTHER THAN the term you seek. You’ve also said very well that the value of Wikipedia and Google are to broaden your search so you can narrow it again. In fact, the beauty of selecting a very narrow thesis in the first place is that it lets us approach it from so many perspectives. Examining the small question from all angles convinces readers that we’ve thoroughly argued the central claim.

  16. Research tips
Shouldn’t rely all on “popular” sources ex: magazine articles and tv interviews, etc.
ex: username’s paper on westboro baptist church and how they create support for the gay community. His search only turned up coverage of the hate protests and nothing to support his claim.
    Looking in the wrong place:
Dig deeper on claim, in order to find sources.
The worst thing by finding the wrong sources :
    1) find someone who agrees
    2) find an article that echos your own idea
    3) parrot someone else’s ideas
    Google scholar
Ex: username searches for celebrity endorsement. Found article on negative celebrity endorsements. Good source that also provided term nervative information transeevrance that can be used in separate search.
What if you can get the source:
If the article costs money: copy article link name. Go to Rowan’s Campbell library search. Put title into search.
    1) think about topic
    2) talk about topix
    3) reasesrchable topics that aren’t immediately named in thesis. Teens and concepts that apply.
    4) library database, google scholar, Wikipedia (use carefully. Get sources directly from article)
    5) if you run into pay wall, put title name into rowan Campbell library database.
    6) read and apply it into your thesis
    7) apply evejdence from outside your primary topic to your very specific thesis

    My search for sources
    -animal training abuse
    -pain as reinforcement
    -conditioning /punishment
-slavery (slaves v. Indentured servants; slaves are worked until they died while indentured servants are released after a certain amount of time)
-prison (tanks=cells, yard time= performance time, cheap meals, suicide and depression as a result of incarceration)

I see what you’re doing here, Today, and the analogies are brilliant. You’ll do very well to find evidence of similarities between how Sea World treats orcas and how humans treat other humans. If the writing is really good, you won’t have to say, “See the similarity?” Your readers will feel it, and the shock of drawing the analogy for themselves will be powerfully persuasive.
