For my research essay, I will be investigating the advantageous possible uses of stem cells within the modern society. Although the research has been stigmatized due to a few misconceptions, they have many beneficial uses.
These cells are non-specified cells that can be programmed to become any type of cell. This is favorable in modern society specifically due to the fact that in the human body, organs go bad, or they were defective to begin with. These organs can be replaced using surgical means, but the amount of transplatable organs available is much lower than that of those who need them. By using stem cells, organs such as the heart or lung can be grown and transplanted into an individuals body. Stem cells also have the ability to cure certain diseases that are caused by stimuli on the cellular level. These diseases include Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Heart diseases, type 1 diabetes, etc.
Human stem cells can be found in more places than aborted fetuses. They are located in the placenta, blood of the placenta, and blastocysts (fertilized human eggs outside of the womb). This misconception has caused the magnitude of research to be overlooked due to the immoral aspect of this science. By the definition of the anti stem cell movement, this would not be “man trying to play God”, but instead, man saving another mans life and improving another’s living quality.
