To many people, money is the most solid, most definitive proof they have of well-being. To have a lot of money is never wrong – to be low on money is very wrong. But the very concept of money is a dynamic one. It’s a dynamic concept that is built, very basically, on a sort of honor system. Yes, money has no value other than the value we all says it does. Historically, money was invented as a way to make exchanging goods easier. Money started off as gold, but when gold became too heavy for larger quantities and too scarce for higher demand, we started using paper. Each paper stated its equivalent worth in gold. Eventually, paper became fully independent, and gold was removed entirely from the equation: the value of the paper was based off what the government said. And when paper became too heavy, we made money digitized. Now people have even less solid proof that there is money at all; the banks say we have the money, so we have the money. Is there any backing that the dollar our bank says we have is actually worth a dollar? None really, except for the reassurances of the government. What ever step comes next, no one knows for sure but any new step only increases how arbitrary the concept of our money is. However, as long as the government, and society continues to say that our money is worth something, it will continue to be worth something.
You’re in real trouble in this class, Amazonite, not only because this one assignment doesn’t begin to meet the requirements, but mostly because it’s the only thing you’ve published, apparently. If other posts are hiding somewhere, most likely you haven’t categorized them under your username. Do so immediately if you want to get off the Starfish Warning System Danger List (a nickname).
As you know, you’ll receive quick grades in four grading criteria: Argument, Rhetoric, Mechanics, Scholarship (ARMS). Grades can always be improved by revision. To understand your grades, you need to know your Grade Code, which I shared with you in class MON SEP 19. I’ve numbered your paragraphs for easy identification. The Writing Center offers free peer-to-peer writing instruction appointments to suit your schedule. And additional feedback is always available from me upon request.
Argument (Grade S)
There’s not enough here to judge, Amazonite.
Rhetoric (Grade S)
You have a fine facility for language, but the Rhetoric grade is an assessment of how well you use language to advance your Argument. No argument grade, no rhetoric grade.
Mechanics(Grade: O)
You haven’t violated any of the basic grammar rules, and your sentences are well constructed. We’ll check in again when you’ve completed a much more substantial Rewrite.
Scholarship (Grade S)
No sources cited, no Works Cited. Both are essential for essays in a research-based course.
OVERALL
This is disturbing, Amazonite. Your current grade is a reflection of how this work would be graded if it were submitted as part of your Portfolio. Since it’s the only thing I have to go on, you’re currently not meeting the course requirements. However, the semester is young and help is available. Every post can be endlessly revised, and they will need to be since you’re starting out with deep grade penalties for lateness. I will meet with you any MON or WED in personal conferences and provide continuous feedback in and out of class once you start to publish. My experience with students who dig themselves into holes is that they never recover and achieve what they intend. Turn things around immediately.
