Agenda MON APR 23

MON APR 23

Taking helmets out of football is a very counterintuitive idea itself.

Taking helmets out of football is counterintuitive.

It may seem as if this will hurt the players, but in fact it will help protect the players.

It may seem that playing unprotected will hurt players, but in fact it will help them.

No helmets will make keep players from taking risky, hard hits, and cause them to have more caution when playing the game.

Playing bareheaded will keep players from tackling head-first, sparing them from head, neck, and brain injuries.

They all will be protected from severe concussions, spinal cord injuries, and developing CTE later in life.

They will be protected from severe concussions, spinal cord injuries, and late-developing CTEs.

There is however, some opposition to this counterintuitive idea.

There is, however, some opposition to this counterintuitive idea.

Many people feel as if there would be no change to the amount of head injuries sustained in a football game.

Many people feel there would be no reduction to the number of head injuries sustained in a football game.

They feel as if players will still hit hard, and make risky plays.

They feel players will still hit hard and make risky plays.

Today football helmets are evolving more and more everyday.

Football helmets are evolving more and more every day.

Risk compensation is when protective equipment prompts individuals to act more aggressively which increases the potential for injury. If you give an individual better protective equipment, they are going to have an increase in aggression, causing more injuries. Helmets may have been upgraded, and made to absorb hits, but they still do the same damage.

  1. -looked at a final polish workshop and three student examples
-do your survey online of teacher evaluation
-portfolio due Wednesday (Visual, 3000 essay, annotated bib., 4 essays, reflective statement)
-Post a paragraph from your rewrites that you want to be revised and looked at for another type of final polish workshop

  2. We are down to the final two classes, today and Wednesday, other than conferences. Our portfolios should be complete by Wednesday, although we can test our odds and continue to make revisions to them even after Wednesday. Any student that has not completed the course evaluation survey should please do so because the writing arts department is pestering Prof. Today we analyzed our classmates’ arguments and made amends and suggestions for improvement. Many of us are struggling to narrow down our arguments to get the point across with as few words as possible.

  3. All paragraphs, no matter how advanced, can be improved.
Make sure to draw out conclusions for your readers because if you don’t, they will have the opportunity to think of clear counterarguments.
Polishing each paragraph helps to make it more clear and concise.

    1. I like the way you say that better than my version, PR.

Every paragraph can be made less crappy.

I’m not sure I’ll adopt your language, but it is more polite.
      These are good notes.

  4. Class was longer than I thought it’d be. We started by going over the “Final polish workshop” tab. It focused on making sure that we had clear and concise reasoning for our work, and it was very useful information to know. We’ve gone over the idea of “clear and concise” in the past, but this really made it all make sense, and I would have appreciated this tab more a few weeks ago when I had more than a couple days.
The second half of class was spent analyzing and critiquing student’s work based off an anonymous survey with note cards. We really only had time to go over two of them.
The last real academic class of the semester was very useful.

    1. It felt like a good class, but I’m never sure, so I appreciate the confirmation, Knuckles. The best time to deliver almost every bit of material turns out to be the first week of class. If only that week lasted 15 Mondays and 15 Wednesdays!

The second half of class was spent analyzing and critiquing student’s work based off an anonymous survey with note cards. We really only had time to go over two of them.

      Some Final Proof improvements:

The second half of class was spent analyzing and critiquing STUDENTS’ work based ON an anonymous survey with note cards. We had time to go over ONLY two of them.

Do these make sense to you?

  5. In class today, we first discussed the schedule to turn in our portfolios. This will be on either April 30, or May 2. After this, we went to the “Final polish workshop” lecture and looked over ways to effectively make your essay stronger. This can be by using intriguing words and annotate as much as you can. You need to keep the reader interested, and this is one way how. You must be able to push the reader in the way your argument want them to focus on. A paragraph in my essay was used and showed me how I could guide the reader through my writing.

    1. Actually, LB, you’ll be “turning in” your Portfolios tomorrow WED APR 25. It’s the Grade Conferences that will be held on either APR 30 or MAY 02, depending on whether or not your Portfolio is certified complete on APR 25.

  6. We did it! We only have two classes left. Wednesday is the last day to put our portfolios together. If they are not ready by then, then our conferences will be delayed. However, if we have it ready on Wednesday, we can discuss our meeting time on Monday, April 30th. We can still edit what we have past Wednesday.
We can make our essays stronger by using words that make the reader indulge in your writing and want to read more of it. We have to persuade the reader to think the way we do. Professor helped two students edit their paragraphs to make them more persuasive and stronger.
